warlock dmgFollow

#1 Apr 08 2008 at 4:15 AM Rating: Decent
hello warlocks,

I have a warlock friend that I run with a lot and he is haveing a tough time on the dmg meters!! it is my understanding that warlocks are usually on the top or battleing for top spot in dmg but my friend consistantly gets beat by the tank wtf. we are doing 5 mans and he is almost always 4th at 13-16% dmg

I know some of the problem is his hit rating but I was wondering is there a good spell rotation that he should use or is the spells to avoid (they sound good on paper but put into practice the just arent dmg efficiant)
this is his armory
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Area+52&n=Bakhand

this is mine
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Area+52&n=Kelexian

and I am 10-15% higher dmg this should not be, right? or am I wrong?

he was destruction but everyone seems to say that afflic is better for dmg, questing lvling and 5 mans should he go back to destruction.

I appriciate any help and feedback
and yes we are noobs and are gear is not that great and you can laugh, point and make fun but afterwards please give some suggestions lol

Thank you

Your bud doesn't have some *key* talents.... (NO DARK PACT!!!).

Have him respec to one of the cookie cutter affliction specs. He also has some healing gear on... get that off asap. Stam is your friend while leveling. Go spend a ton of gold (well, maybe around 1K) and get his tailoring up to get the netherweave set to level in (it's fabulous for an affliction lock).

That little stuff there will increase his spell damage by a *lot*, and increase his longevity (dark pact is unbelievably good). Use your imp and you have unlimited mana (almost). You should have 0 down time while grinding, and you'll be able to take 3 even level targets at once with instant howl of terror & dots.

Even as affliction, in 5 mans I used: curse of shadows -> corruption -> shadowbolt spam. This depends a great deal on if the mob lives for more than a few seconds.. if not, then just shadowbolt, or if there are multiple mobs and you have a pally tank (ideal), dot them all!

IMO,his spell dmg is too low.
I also noticed that he has ALOT of mana, and much "of the Eagle" gear.
Hit rating isnt much of a trouble at that level, and he got very much hit rating imo.
A lvling warlock should focus on stamina and spell dmg, then spell crit over int.
His crit is too low to go destruction.
My cast rotation is :
UA,CoA,Corruption and then some shadowbolts.

Edit:for the specc, take 3 points out of suppression and put them into
Amplify curse,Curse of Exhaustion and Dark Pact.

Whats your spell rotations? On trash I would just use Corruption then SB spam. If mobs are living longer than 20 sec, then throw on UA if you have it or Immolate.

When I started doing lvl 70 instances I was doing down around 15% of the damage. As I learned to play the class and where to use what, I started to move up the damage meter.

With better gear (just normal instance blues and the FSW set) I was normally doing 35% of the damage.

Now with 998 spell damage unbuffed, Im top 3 damage in our 25 man raids and top 2 in the 10mans. But were all getting spanked by our T5/T6 moonkin...

thank you. can I get link to some of the cookie cutter builds

again we are lvling and doing 5mans and some BG's our intent however is BG's and arena at 70 and from what I can tell it is better to go to destro for arena once he can get his stats right so I would apperciate a link to that build too for future use but for now just the builds for dps in 5mans and lvling

Thank you

Destro is a bad build for arena since he'll almost never have enough crit to overcome the kind of resil that most arena teams will rock (I literally have a 0% crit chance vs. my own resil in arena gear).

As far as his instance damage goes, he's probably got the worst gear I've seen. Yours isn't much better. Stop wearing healing gear. Just stop. Find some real gear.

let me ask you this. How did you get up to your current level? Did you guys do ANY quests in Hellfire Peninsula? The quest rewards from the starting zone in the outlands is so much better than most of the gear your lock friend has on now. Please tell me he didn't vendor/DE the rewards from regular old quests in the starting 2 zones??

If so, then it is off to the AH for him. Get spell damage and stamina as affiction. Crit does next to nothing for an affliction lock. I see he is a tailor and engineer......so I bet he doesn't have any money. Tell him about this site and just start reading all of the tips on tradeskills and class info.

For tips on what gear to get, it is better just to go your the armory and click on "find an upgrade" then research how to get it.

dude his gear is complete garbage, and so is his build, i dont mean to be an *** or anything your probably new to WoW. tell him to respec afflic agian he needs dark pact, take off malediction and imp. drain soul, for the desto. part tell him to take off devistation and add to shadowburn, and in demo. spec add 2/2 imp. healthstone and 5/5 demonic embrace. For gear tell him to buy some Neatherweave armor if you want to, since your close to 70 whatever but damn..
for spell rotation i usually do
SB - Immolate - corruption - lifetap - CoA - drain life
and if they arnt dead by then just throw up another SB.
if a tank is doing too much damage on the thing and your DoTs don't have time to go off then just pure SB it. and try to throw DoTs on off targets if the tank is good enough to keep aggro.

How is he so far behind? Both of your gear is a little subpar. I'm the same level as him and I've got almost twice the +damage as both of you.

He's got more hit rating then I do and I do perfectly fine in instances.

My spell rotation is: UA, Corruption, CoA, SL.

He needs some serious retuning on his talents too. I wouldn't reccomend my build either, I need a little bit of retuning myself. :)

How do you make links appear like words?

Drop Eagle stuff and get "of the Sorcerer" gear.

Green Of the Sorcerer gear is generally better than green quest rewards for Affliction (in some instances, even better than Blue quest rewards.) Disreguard +Hit for now entirely. Rack up a decent amount of Spell (should have like 500+ with Fel Armor on), and Aim for around 9000hp/7000mp with Imp out. It's ridiculous that +Heal exceeds Spell Damage.

I know you've worked hard and gotten some nice Blue drops but I'll tell you now you'll see an improvement if you take a lot of that stuff off. Head, Shoulders, Chest, Wrists, Hands (yes, hands), and Pants can all be upgraded if you simply switch them out with a 64-66 "Sorcerer" item - they are litterally PERFECT for Affliction locks.

The main problem he's having in Instances was a problem all along (he just hasn't noticed it before because he didn't care or wasn't informed.) Warlock DotRot is only good in groups for certain situations, most of the time a Corruption (for Nightfall) and then a SBolt spam will be key, and the only way to keep up with Melee and Mage damage. 500 Spell will double your current SBolt numbers, 680 will double the final SBolt rank. Keep food and water handy, and at the end of Fights use Life Tap to even out the % of Life and Mana and then eat and drink to reduce downtime.

For Talents, as a non-70 Affliction I highly recommend you leave your talentset Grind and PVP-based: stay primarily Affliction, reach 11 into Destruction for ShadowBurn, stay off of Malediction and dont waste talents on Threat-droppers just yet. Put 1 point into Shadow Embrace.

Get Amp Curse, CoEx for emergencies, clear up Drain Soul and take most of those points out of Supression (leave 1 or 2 if you want). Pick up Dark Pact immediatly (will allow you to SBolt spam through a longer fight.) In Demonology at LEAST get Demonic Embrace.

While this talentset does not bolster the ShadowBolt Spam perfectly, it WILL work well enough if you have SM, Nightfall, Bane, and ISB and Dark Pact to keep the bolts flowing. If you want to see another Jump in damage you can switch to Destruction but once you hit 70 it will be very difficult to keep up (since you will start to need SpellHit.)

I simplified my Talent instructions into This Build so you could get a more defined picture.

To clear any questions - CoEx, Fel Concentration, Shadow Embrace, IHoT, UA, and SBurn are primarly used for Solo grind and PVP situations. It is still highly recommended that you get these. All have their place in 5-man PVE at times.

5/5 Shadowmastery, 5/5 Bane, 5/5 ISB and 2/2 Nightfall are all integral to your 5-man grouping. Without these, you may as well give up on being able to do Damage with an Affliction Lock.

On nasty bosses that need to be burned, throw in SBurns and Death Coils when available (they are high mana but a decent boost to DPS). Remember to use your cooldowns throughout instances, saving them only when difficult pulls are ahead.

Trinkets, Bloodfury, Amp Curse, and Death Coil all apply - remember not to DC anything that can be feared without obviously knowning that its going to run for 2 seconds.

BTW I suggest Kelexian drops some of his Eagle gear as well, and picks up a Mix of Sorcerer and Invoker gear. This will drastically help your terrible +Spell, reduce some of your abnormally (and unneccisarily) high HP, and bring in some nice Crit% to work with which will drastically help for Grinding, PVP, and 5-mans.

Drop your Pants and Necklace, and try to hold onto that Witching Band, your Chest, and your Shoulders as long as you can.

Once you boost your Spell and Crit enough, Empowered Frostbolt will be worth it. You don't need hit right now since you have Elemental Precision.

ty for the tip i will look into it

are you refering to the green "of the sorcerer" or the blue "sorcerer regalia" or the purple "sorcerer regalia" gear? ...yeah i know that green<blue<purple.

This is not true. End result stats are what to focus on, not the color of the name. Of course, generally equal level greens will have fewer stats than a purple. But not all epics are better than all greens if you get my meaning.
