Concerning LevelingFollow

#1 Apr 07 2008 at 5:00 AM Rating: Decent
I rolled a shadow priest for my guild today, she's level 19 now. And I was wondering at some point does leveling get any better than just wanding things to death with a DoT up. Because I find this really inefficient. I find that I can't solo a lot of quests in packed mobs zones. I'm just seaking simple answers about....

Will leveling get better? And when will it?

Thanks in advance before replies...

Loving my priest so far.

I started Horton two weeks ago, and I'm up to level 45. I'm going Holy though with a focus on DPS talents to help me level.

From what I've read, Shadow doesn't shine until level 40 when you get Shadow Form. Until then, I saw a lot of people recomending you put talents into Spirit Tap, Wand Specializiaton, and even some Holy stuff *gasp*.

My typical spell rotation is:

Holy Fire --> Smite --> Shadow Word: Pain --> Mind Blast --> Wand to death

If it is a tough mob, I'll throw in another smite. After the fight, I'll toss out an improved heal over time and I'm usually full health and mana by the time I pull the next mob.

I don't bother with Powerword Shield unless I get jumped by two mobs, or I'm soloing some tough quest mob. I'd rather take the hits to raise defense and not use the mana on the shield.

I've found leveling to be quite easy so far, but I'm running in really nice gear from having friends take me through instances along the way. Since you are in a guild and making the preist to help out, I'd hit them up for some run throughs.

But that's how we kill stuff efficiently. At 20 if specced right, will get you mindflay. At 40 if specced right will get you shadowform. If you don't mind respeccing, grab mindflay at 20 and put your next 5 points into wand spec. That way you hit harder. Then respec all your points into shadow to get shadowform at level 40 and put your next 5 points back into wand spec. Always try to get a decent wand for your level.

What I did while leveling was Mindblast, SW:P, Smite once or twice and start wanding at 40%. Once I was past 20, Mindblast, SW:P, Mindflay and wand to death. That's basically what I did until 70, cast spells until around 40% and wand. We're not built to take on a pack of mobs. I leveled 2 priests, and a warlock. Warlocks can tank 4 mobs, we can psychic scream and hope that buys us enough time to outrun them. If those packed mobs are actually grouped together, all you can do is mana up, unload on them and drink afterwards.

All priest leveling is painful until level 20. At 20 it starts getting easier, as Mindflay adds considerable control to your fights. By the time I was in my mid-30s, my shadowpriest was leveling quite easily and rapidly. Shadowform was almost overkill.

As to taking on multiple mobs, I find that Azelia is a bit off. Learning how to keep yourself safe as a shadowpriest is tricky, but quite doable. Not too long ago I ended up in a fight with my level 60 shadowpriest against a total of four equal-level mobs. There was lots of fears and DoTs, lots of Vamp Touch, and considerable running, but I beat them. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's definitely doable. Spirit Tap makes all the difference in the world. (By the way, if you don't have Spirit Tap, it is the must-have priest leveling talent.)

I found leveling a shadow priest to be very quick and effective. Also, I am of the mindset that I am not "wasting" (relative term) points outside of the Shadow Tree until I got at least Shadow Form.

Mind Flay is your first big offensive boost. With this spell you should open up with Mind Blast, walk backwards casting SW:P, mind flay, mind flay... and normally the mob is basically dead. If not, then you can throw 2 or 3 wand hits or another mind blast.

Most will say this is mana inefficient and they would be right, but I found that as long as you let spirit tap run you are good to go. For chain pulling that is steady and efficient, after the first course as stated above... get in range of the mob and wait for your Spirit Tap to have less than 5 seconds left. Start the cycle with a Holy Fire (which adds a DoT), and then follow with the first mentioned chain of casting. Pre 40, if doing this, you will not be able to cast your second mindflay unless you get a black out proc and this is okay as you will sub a MB for this. By following this chain you should be able to go through 6 - 8 mobs before needing to drink mana. Shield only if needed or as damage dictates. Through the whole process you may need one or two Renews, but it makes for very fast grinding.

Once you hit 40 you will be doing the first chain all the way through and using VE when you begin taking damage as this will be your renew spell.

Don't give up..

The fun will come, trust me. :)

I leveled full shadow, almost. I took everything in the shadowtree I wanted before going to the others and taking like extra damage on wand and that stuff..

I didnt use my wand that much before level 60(pre-bc) and at lvl 70..
I rather used my spells then the wand, cause it felt like they died faster, and it was more fun playing it that way. :)

I have a resto shammy with a t4ish elemental set, so if I ever want to go caster DPs I can. But I wanted another form of DPS, and I only like caster DPS. So I thought about shadow! since it isn't conventional casting, whereas you channel a lot while plopping DOTs.
