a fellow prot pally told me that I should be using some +spell dmg gear, but in the Defense mitigation post it shows that most prot gear is just +to defense skill or block. Is that all I need to be aiming for or dose the +spell gear help?
I seem to hold hate farily well enless someone gets carried away /w dps and Ive never had a complaint about needing to many heals, but since Im approaching 70 I just want to make sure I get my gear in order, dont want to waste time on stuff I dont need.

The general rule is you get your spelldamage from your weapon, everything else you get from your armor. As you get higher and higher through progression, you can tweak that rule a bit, but at your level and as you hit 70, you'll want to get a spell damage weapon, and get your defensive stats from your armor.

For example, the easiest weapon to get at 70 which is the best one that you can get for a while is the Crystalforged Sword which you can pick up at the AH.

As usual the Captian is giving pearls!!

Another option is the Continuum Blade.

In the FAQ it is recomended that you get 200 spell damage and adjust from there. With the Continuum Blade you get 121 (as with the Crystalforged Sword).
Either way, add a +40 spell damage enchant (total of 161) and spread some Superior Wizard Oil(also made by a chanter and found on the AH) gives you a total of +203 spell damage. TA DA. Now besides your weapon, the rest of your gear can be for Def and Avoidance. I suggest you see the FAQ and espically the Def/Mig stickys posted on the forums. There is a gear list near the end of the Def/Mig sticky that was really helpful. Actually I wearing most of it :-)

The other area in which you get spell damage from for higher end work is consumables...

Adept's Elixers and Superior Wizard Oil are doable for instances if you really need it, possibly a Flask for raids (though threat usually isn't a HUGE issue as much as the survivability that a Flask of Fortification would bring is).

Or, if you don't mind running BGs for a bit, get the Gladiator's Gavel.

FAQ says to target +200 spell damage. This weapon gets you there on it's own. Add consumables, and you'll become mob glue :)

With the new BG mark system, you can get this pretty quickly.

I must have missed the Patch notes - what new system?

You can trade in one of each Mark for some honor, repeatable.

You get ~340 honor from turning in 1 of each mark (i.e. 1 AV, 1AB, 1 EotS, and 1 WSG). Plus, it's repeatable. I'm so psyched because I hated grinding AV for honor.
