Just wondering what sort of rotation a prot warrior would be using not in a group but like solo. I have read a few guides that say revenge and shield block with sometimes shield slam and things but just not too sure.

Devistate till you have 5 sunders up then revenge, shield slam this maximizes the damage you will do. Reflect every chance you get on casters unless you need more rage i usually have a rage issue unless I have 4 mobs on me, soloing normal mobs that is.

Froman's tip is probably your best bet. Why in hell would you solo anything in tank gear, you're just asking for hurt. If it's all you have...sure, but seriously, grab some DPS gear and slap it on.

Zerker stance is better IMO. whirlwind does nice dps, plus you can execute at 20% and use zerker rage for added rage gain. Heroic Strike is no good, burns through rage too fast for only a slight dps gain, and you get no rage back when you use it.

for DPS in prot spec, i usually wear full DPS gear & dual wield.
usual method of attack is charge>tclap>bshout(if needed)then switch to zerker stance and spam devestate, bashing WW whenever its up.

You WILL have an abundance of rage in no time at all, which signals time to start heroic strike spamming. Can't say i execute much when dpsing in prot spec unless its a boss, as i usually have loads of rage i wanna save for the next mob.

If you are grinding mobs that hurt you alot, be it thru lack of good dps gear on your part, or just hard-hitting mobs, then a DPS rotation in Def stance would be something like

charge>tclap>bshout(if needed)>Def stance>Shield Slam>revenge whhenever it is up, and again, spam devestates and heroic strikes when ur rage bar fills up.

ha, sounds like everyone has their own answer - and i'll give you another.

battle stance
keep battle shout up
1h + sporegarr shield
open with TC + demo shout
spam devastate + overpower
spell reflect + shield bash makes casters a breeze
i never have rage for heroic strike

i rarely stop to eat with this approach. dual wielding didn't help the mobs die much quicker for me and i had to stop and eat a lot.

I seem to do better with shield block and revenge than with anything else. I can solo equal lvl or +1 lvl mobs for days without ever having to bandage. Sure it takes a bit of time....

I did try using a 2H and battle/zerker stance. It actually seemed to take longer and I took more dmg. Didn't try dual wielding.

At 59, I don't have much that differs between my tanking gear and DPS. It's whatever quest rewards I can muster.

I think it's really gear dependant on how you want to solo. I HATED, I mean hated solo'ing when I 1st changed to Prot. I struggled thru every fight in tanking gear, kills took forever, all and all it just sucked. I used full DPS gear and DW'ed after I seen how bad it was (for me at least).

Post KZ gear, I can solo in tanking gear better than my dps set. Granted I dont' have the best dps set (some KZ epics that I was allowed to off spec on, the ones that no one needed: neck, R&J trinket, etc). Once I get full dps T4 or higher I'll try the DW way of solo'ing. Just right now in Prot gear, my parry bubble/dodge/block/etc I take not much damage and can run thru mobs pretty nicely, still slower even with king's defender and mongoose on it, but the lack of eating/bandages make it worth it for me.

So to not answer your question even more than I have not... it's up to you, how you feel comfy, what set of gear is better, and what allows you to get the most amount of mobs with little downtime.

Play around, it gets easier with better gear Smiley: tongue

you take extra damage in zerker stance. when specced 17/44 you don't worry about this so much because the extra dps makes some fights very short, but without flurry and BT all you're doing is extending the beating being handed to you... the extra 3% crit from zerker stance and damage from WW !> increased damage taken in zerker stance and longer fights in prot spec.

you can hit devastate with every gcd and spam heroic strike in between them. my HS's crit for up to 1500 and devastates generally crit for around 700.

Or alternatively wear DPS armor with fast DPS weapon and shield

Stay in Battle stance or Berserker stance, make sure shield slam is in your action bar

1. = Charge in
2. = Thunderclap ( If in Battle stance )
3. = Battle / Demo shout
4. = Devastate until 5 sunders
5. = Heroic strike with shield slam until enemy life is < 20%
6. = Execute with style
7. = Profit

Make sure to throw in the occasional shield bash to interrupt and concussive blow to stun casters and mobs that tend to heal others

Although you will grind at much slower rate, it'll require less consumption on food and bandages when dealing with physical-attacking melee mobs
