Prot Pally Duo with a MageFollow

So, I'm planning on starting a blood knight today with my brother who is planning on being a mage. We've done this before, but alliance side on a different server, now that we are on the same faction/realm as my main and friends, I think we can get past level 20(Where we stopped last time, although I loved my pally so much hes 34 now). The thing is, at first, before I could really AoE on my pally,
So, I'm starting a blood knight today with my brother who is our fight went like..

I go round up 5-6 quest mobs.
Bro get agro by using arcane explosion.
He keeps it up and frost novas when he can to get out of melee range.
All the while I'm healing him.

We got quests done pretty fast that way, but I figure that now because we are horde and I know the quests inside and out, we can do it even faster. After we are 35-40, I'm planning on going Prot spec to tank in instances and AoE and hold hate when we are duoing. I'm thinking the fights will go like this:

I go round up 10-12 quest mobs(If melee).
I proceed to AoE grind like normal, making sure I'm getting lots of hate to keep these off my brother.
He spams blizzard, flamestrike, and arcane explosion.
Mobs die, we get exp, quest completion progress, and phat lewtz.

The thing is, he wants to go deep fire, which isn't uber soloing for AoE, but as you aren't mages, I won't get into that. The main point, I just realised, is that I think his group AoE will about stay the same, because no trees really boost AoE by alot anyway. This spec should also make it so that taking elite mobs 2 on 1 should be easier, and instances should be better because his single-target DPS will be great. Also, there is the nice boost that if we are fighting caster mobs he can help me kill it, because my Pally is horrible at killing casters.

Paladin Spec Mage Spec Any tweaks you can put on our specs, strat, or just some simple advice or constructive critisizm is appreciated.

Also by advise, I decided to make a list of items that would be good for me;

Figurine of the Colossus

Petrified Lichen Guard

I loved aoeing with a mage friend at around level 40 and recommend it to all.

I cant see why you cant just hold them all while he aoes them down. Get a shield spike, drop a consecration, cast SoL then judge it on a mob then recast SoL. This really only works if you go down the Protection Tree after Blessing Of Sanctuary and Reckoning though. (minumum Level 35-40) Make sure you get redoubt and shield specialisation, improved Righteous Fury, BoS and Reckoning as without these it will be much harder to survive the aoe pummel.

BTW I dont think your links worked.

This is basically how I leveled to 70 with a friend. He was arcane and I was protection since I'm a firm believer that early on you don't get alot of holy talents that'll help keep mages alive in these kinds of situations.

There are benefits and drawbacks to leveling this way, to name a few...You get used to healing in intense situations (benefit) Questing goes alot faster than 1v1 fighting (benefit) When you get to end-game content if this is all you do to level your mage doesn't know how to play without AoE'ing [Exactly the problem I ended up having with my friend](drawback) By nature of the human ego there will be times [if your like me and my friend quite a few] that you get cocky and pull way more than you can handle which leads to deaths (drawback)

Fire really isn't the best spec for AoE grinding but if thats the way your friend wants to spec then go with it, it won't make too big a deal until a bit later in the game anyways, so go out and have some fun taking on a dozen mobs at a time =D

I agree, it would probably work better with you, the paladin, keeping threat on everything and letting him to the AE dps. You'd have to spec into protection for the Righteous Fury talent and all the other tanking goodies. Plus, you two will be instance ready at any moment.

Oh, and you've always got that handy bubble to keep him alive if he pulls too much threat. And I think he probably will need it :)

Fire is good enough since you can take on those mobs by yourself too if you spec protection. The mage just speeds things up, which is a good thing, because while you can take them on by yourself, it is not OMFGFAZTSHIZZLE!, but trust me: protection AoE-ing is the bomb.

No thing in this game amused me more than taking on that many mobs that are actually beating on you (au contraire to those frost mages that must make SURE they don't get touched) and you just shrugging it off while shouting: THIS HURTS YOU MORE THAN IT HURTS ME!

Try it, love it.

"but as you aren't mages, I won't get into that."

I resent that, I have both lol

with you being prot and your brother using mainly AE spam for aoe dps, fire would actually be the way to go. Just make sure he goes 13 points into arcane and puts 3 points in Arcane Impact. This way he'll maximize his AE dmg and he'll also maximize his single-target dps. Frost is better for aoe if your soloing since you can control the mobs but in your case, you have control on the mobs so the mages only task is to do as much dmg as possible.

Yeah i have a 45 mage too that I dappled in Solo aoe with as well. I think its a fun change from the usual quest / instance grind for a little while anyway.

To the OP just to reiterate what I was saying earlier. Its really important to spec into BoSanc and Reckoning. BoSanc will help decrease the amount of damage taken, increase the amount of reflective damage and threat. Reckoning will help you to stay alive. When you have Seal of Light up and judged on the target mob reckoning will help proc it more often.

This becomes really fun when you get to 65-70, gear up and start soloing the old world content like stratholme.

I remember aggroing a couple of the first streets at once. You wouldnt even need reckoning if you had the tanking trinket that heals you for a set amount every block. This: ( http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=27529;source=live ) You could just wait till health gets low then activate it and abracadabra you had full hp again!

Thanks for all the imput guys! Sorry I've been neglecting my own thread. Anywho, I'll get to updating the specs ASAP.

And thanks for the spec and gear suggestions, I'll by sure to add that, and do you think I should look for stuff that has a set % chance to activate on hit?

Here are some shields that have a chance on hit effect which are great for any Prot Pally planning on AOEing. I will list them in from lowest to highest level:

Level 28:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=9458

Level 38:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=1204

Level 54:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=1168

Level 55:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=13375

Level 62:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=25828

These willl increase threat generation and dps via the reflective damage that prot pallies strive for when aoeing. I believe attaching a shield spike or Stamina enchant to them would be the way to go.

Anyway hope this helps. Some like the last one are dead easy to get but others rely on drop rate so it just depends how much time your willing to spend getting them. Good luck.

(EDIT: Just to let you know 3 of these are instance drops, the Skullflame Shield is a world drop that you may get in the AH and the PLG is acquired via rep grinding for Sporregar)
