Gurus,

I would like to know on which bases I should compare holy priest items. Here's my situation but that should apply to all items. I'm a 48 holy priest mainly healing in instances. Yesterday we we're running Maraudon and I've won the Chloromesh Girdle. I was using the Runecloth Belt until then. I'm perplexed... which one should I choose? All 3 stats are important and I would like to made a good comparison of the items.

The +26 spell dmg is great but I'm loosing 180 mana and some crit% and also some mp5 regen.

BTW I know there are some better belts at that level but that's what I've got so far.

Here's my toon Cassandre.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I don't want someone to tell me "choose that belt over that one" and give no explanations or that I need to have well balanced stats. I'm looking for an item comparison method.

Either one can help. I assume that based on your spec and healing gear that you prefer to group more often than not. If that is the case an extra 26 healing is nice, but as you mentioned so is the plus regen and mana pool.

This is what I would look at, what happens more... do you run out of mana while healing, or do you find yourself with your big heals just not be quite enough.

My feeling is that while leveling I would always prefer more mana and crit chance. In a grouping instance, I normally cast a renew on the main tank and then use small heals or greater heals as hp levels demand. With this theory in use, at your current level I do not think that 26+ healing gear makes a huge difference as your renew ticks do not get too much from your healing gear and when you do have to solo you are that much more efficient.

The other option is to start doing what you will have to do in the future when you are in the upper 60's or 70. That would be carry differing types of gear. I have a healing gear for instance runs and then dps gear. Unfortuantely, my bank is quite full as I am switching my dps gear very slowly to + spell damage now that I am no longer Shadow Spec. This means that I am gimped with only about 500 + spell damage gear for the time being.

Hope this helps a bit and looking at the two pieces there really is not that much of a significan difference.

Thanks for this good post WiskheyDuck but let me be a little more specific.

First I know that any of those two pieces of equipment won't make a dramatic change to my character.

My main is a 70 lock and when I want to compare 2 pieces of equipment I'm using a score system based on each stat. For example:

+1 stam = 1 point
+1 int = 0.75 points
+1 spell dmg = 0.33 pts
+1 spi = 0 pts
and so on...

For my warlock, based on that, both the Chloromesh Girdle and the Runecloth Belt would be worth 9 points (rounded). They would be equal.

Now what would be the points from a holy priest perspective? This is a system I would like to use in the future for any other piece of equipment. I'm sure some of you are using something similar to that.

Hard to say what the point spread is with the new changes in 2.4, as Spirit is huge combined with Intellect as it effects the whole mana regen differently.

I could not give a true answer either based on the intro of Spell Haste that is going to become more and more prevelant as well. With that being said as a leveling priest, I would look at it this way:

Int: +2
Spirit: +1
Healing: +.5
Damage: +.33 (where dmg is less than current healing gear)
Stamina: +.25

This is very generic, but a priest needs to be able to regen mana while healing and so Spirit has to play a higher role. Intelligence in my opinion is of higher value because you will also want a decent mana pool, especially since it appears that you do not have Spirit Tap as a talent. Again, I am assuming that you prefer to group and so Stamina is not a big issue unless you love BG's, but it is still relative at that level as you have Renew to keep health up and healing for when needed. Plus Desperate Prayer when in trouble.

As you get into the Outlands, I would bump Spirit up to +2, + Healing to 1, and Intelligence to +.75 as you will begin to see a greater need for +healing to keep your tanks upright. With the new changes to mana regen for priests, you may even downgrade Spirit to +1 to be even with healing gear as I can currently go through 2 - 3 full pulls with no stopping and still not worry about mana unless we get a bad pull and I have to heal everyone to keep them up. The new mana regen rules just make a huge difference so I have not had a chance to work it all out yet.
