Hunters Without Pets?Follow

Wtf? Last night I was running around alterac/Hillsbrad farming some iron for a friend. I ran passed a night elf running circles around one of the grizzly bears. I thought to myself, "Maybe he got really bored and is just messing around." and I kept on farming. I did several rounds of ore and saw the same NE doing the same thing about 3-4 times. I'm BE so I couldn't ask him wtf he was doing, and I play on a normal server (you can blame my gf's cousin) so I couldn't just gank him for the sake of all hunters out there...

So I watched.

I watched this NE take on one monster after another, with pretty much the same concept every time. He would sting, concussive, arcane shot every time the cd was up, all while having cheetah on to keep distance, times he kept distance he threw down a frost trap to get distance. Then he'd run a good 10 yards or so away. Wait. Arcane shot, and repeat.

I'm not kidding, I sat there for a good half hour with an expressionless look on my face wondering what he was doing. I never saw his pet come out, not once, he wasn't with anyone. And the guy had improved concussive/wing clip (which he randomly did out of nowhere, I guess when his trap was on cd?)

I haven't played my hunter passed 38... but uh...
Is this common?
Is there some sort of secret cult of petless Hunters I never heard about?

Either he was practising his kiting, found a challenge in leveling a hunter without a pet or he's a moron.

Knowing my faction well, I'd put my money on him being a moron.

Especially if his name was Legolass or something like that. And no, that's not a generalization. The name Legolass is quite popular for Hunter characters.

Can't help but notice most of them have no guilds either.

In answer to your questions:
1)Practicing kiting is fairly common and something hunters need to learn to do.
2)It's not really a secret cult, you have heard of them I am sure ---Huntards are us---

Not only is the name Legolass fairly common but if you spell Legolas backwards you get almost as many results from the armory. These guys are in a secret cult called ----Trying to be Sneaky Huntards--- a left wing branch of ---Huntards are us---

I once knew a huntard who wouldn't use a pet because "a pet won't keep aggro when aimed shot crits for 4k". Duh.

This was pre-TBC.

He also multi-shot pulled.

He was an idiot.

Some people don't even deserve to be able to play this game if they cannot learn how to. If he was practicing kiting then that is understandable. Otherwise this guy or girl has some really mad mental issues to deal with in the near future.

I think this guy/gal was a BOT that forgot to put revive/call pet on to his glide!

Either way, he/she was a moron.

All those saying this hunter was a moron are mistaken IMHO. A moronic hunter would not have been kiting, but rather would have been doing what I did on my first hunter (before I read the boards and found out how to use a pet properly): get at max range from the mob, use as many shots as possible "hey I'm clever, I concuss to get an extra auto-shot in!" and then melee the mob down. If they have a pet, they may tag the mob the pet is on, and then take on another mob themself...or just let aggro switch between them and their pet. These people may be huntards (like I was) but have the potential to grow as long as someone helps them. Of course, ridiculing them is just as fun sometimes.

This hunter was probably practicing kiting, OR trying to clear to a mob they wanted to tame (which you have to do without a pet). The better idea in option B I presented is to tame a temp pet (unless Blizz has fixed the dismiss situation) but to each his own. Sometimes when looking for a rare spawn it may take a while before you get a pet.
And like has been mentioned, this hunter was most likely practicing kiting. While it still would have been better to have a pet out (pet can go w/o growl or even with cower), if he needed the practice it would have probably been better to have longer fights.

Also, jousting (using wing clip + raptor strike at the same time) is a great PvP tool, and it's just as important while kiting if traps are on CD. He was probably PvP specced (as those are very important pvp talents) so there's no reason to think ill of him for using those talents.

The funny thing is, there are way fewer people with a charcter named "Legolas" which is the real spelling. Not only are they unoriginal bastards (and Huntards) but they can't spell for sh*t.

I was playing in a Guild group last night, and a lone hunter came and begged to join us. He was without his pet at the time.... Odd I thought and questioned him, at which point he res'd it and then let it die, and die and die and die..... You'd hope by level 60 you'd realise you had a spell called heal pet... apparently not..... The hunter died a lot too.... Funny that...

I've levelled one hunter to the mid 50's and another to 70. I have never seen a spell called heal pet.

Have experienced several hunter without pets, one even dismissed his pet in the middle of an instance, coz he wanted to tame one of the beasts there. At the end of the story, he ended up not taming one of the three beasts that were in the entire instance, and thus not having a pet for the rest of the instance -.-

What was killing his Pet in a group? I'm guessing he didn't know to turn off Growl while grouped...
