Holy Priest dps?Follow

#1 Apr 02 2008 at 2:54 PM Rating: Decent
I know that those words don't go together, but I'm a holy priest that ocassionally has to grind in high level places to get some motes.
Does anyone else find themselves in this situation? What's the best sequence of spells that you use? Any tips on how to get a Holy Priest some decent DPS?

Link your spec if you can... as well as your skills and secondary skills.

Get Surge of Light if you do not have it for increased dps... this will allow you to get a free smite every mob or so. With the new mana regen tied into intellect it makes the need for Spirit Tap less of a concern once you hit level 70.

As for spell rotation:
1. Holy Fire
2. Mind Blast
3. SW:P
4. Smite
5. Smite

Normally I will be able to cast a free smite in the above mix and then I would just wand them to death while SW:P continues to tick. Easy to do and you do not need to rest to drink until after the 5th or 6th mob. There are also trinkets that allow for additional mana regen everytime you kill a mob so try to have something like that available.

The reason I cast Mind Blast early on after the Holy Fire is for some high HP mobs it will allow you to cast it again even with the 8 second unmodified cooldown. I do tend to stay away from SW:D as a Holy/disc only because I know that I am not getting the additional benefit of Spirit Tap so I want to try to have my 5 second mana regen waiting period over when the mob dies.

Hope this helps a bit. The above is done with about 550 in + damage gear as I do not use healing gear when solo questing or farming materials.

When I first hit 70 I kept a mixed smite/healing build to help me grind mats for enchants & tailoring, it was fine healing instances and didn't switch to a full healing build till it was time to start raiding. Still sometimes have to grind, but no longer find it so painful even in healing gear. Use a spell rotation similar to WhiskeyDuck, without the Mind Blast, often get away without drinking by using shadowfiend and a wand to finnish the mobs off.

Although SoL is definitely a great talent, I'm wondering how you can have a free smite every mob or so. SoL gives you a 50% chance to get a free Smite for every crit you do. Quick calculation here, with 20% crit it means 10% chance to have a free Smite. All in all you need about 10 DD casts to get a free Smite, less if you have higher crit%, more if you have lower crit%. It's more like every 2-3 mobs if you cast 4 DD spell per mob like in your spell rotation.

In short SoL will boost your dps a bit but it will also improve your dpm. The more crit% you have, the better it is.

That is correct pcote, but also it depends on what gear you are running around in. My healing gear does not help my crit chance and so is not overly important to have Surge of Light. I am also speaking from only level 70 experience so to any leveling Priests, be cautious of SoL as it may not be great when you only have a 15% or so Crit Chance.

With that being said, do to talents for 5% extra crit chance for Holy spells, and an additional 5% on top of that for offensive spells. This roughly puts me at 32% crit chance when in my damage / solo gear, which is what I use when farming. So now you see that I have a 1 in 3 chance of crit, or by pure math roughly a change of a Surge of Light proc every 6 casts. On average I am casting at least 5 times a mob if not 6, so thus I normally get a proc a mob or very close to it. Hope that clarifies things for you. (Note I am a 30/31 build with regards to Disc/Holy as I am the Divine Spirit Buff Priest for the raids when we go. The other Priest we use is pure Holy. Hope that makes sense as to why I see the crit rate a bit higher than a true Holy Priest.)

Pcote, one more note, please see the description of Surge of Light... it is based on any critical effect from spells. This includes healing spells, so when you pull multiple mobs and you are healing yourself, it will proc. You can also play the rank game, and cast low ranking flash heals on yourself for a free proc if needed not that I think that makes sense, but it does still cause the ability to proc.
