I was lucky enough to pick up the Shoulderpads of the Stranger from Hydross this last week. I would really like to fit it into my kitty set of gear seeing as it would add a good bit of DPS for me.

The problem that I am running into is as follows --

I have all 5 pieces of T4. I use the gloves and shoulders for kitty form for the bonus energy procs. I currently have the all the pieces set up for tanking gear. It just so happens that using the gloves and shoulders works the best for my dps setup currently.

If I put on the shoulderpads of the stranger, I will need to add another T4 item to keep the proc bonus. This will lower my +hit, however will add expertise from the shoulders.

My current relevant stats are +145 hit (+9.20%), +20 expertise rating = 5 expertise (+1.25%). How does the expertise work when attacking a mob from behind?? I thought that I had read somewhere that when attacking from behind the two stats can be interchangeable. If so what would be the total % needed to reach the magic number?

Thanks for your help

hit affects your base miss rate, i think for druids that's 8.6% miss rate on bosses. expertise affects the mobs dodge rate, which is i think 5.6% on bosses.

if your DPS ing, 1 expertise rating = ~.06% dodge reduction, and 1 hit rating = ~.06% hit rating.

and while you may think those are interchangeable, they play independent roles in the hit table.

it's different for warriors, where I have more experience playing, where you have a much higher miss rate for dual wielding. 27.6%. And your skills only have that 8.6% chance to miss, so expertise is the only way to increase your skill damage output after you get your soft hit cap (other than AP/crit).

So you'd want 8.6% hit and 5.6% dodge reduction; 136 hit rating and 88 expertise rating should be your caps.

If I'm wrong, and druids have a different hit cap (i feel fairly confident they don't have a different hit cap for bosses), someone else will come along and do the math.

It's actually 9% miss. 5.6% Dodge sounds right, although I can't find anything to confirm an exact %.

Besides gloves, none of the T4 pieces are easily swapped between tanking and DPS. Unless you socket your chest for Agi and give it +6 stats enchant. If it's currently 3x +12 Stam, you're trading ~600 health for ~1% dodge. Right before I respec'd resto, I picked up a second set of feral T4 shoulders so I have one enchanted and gem'd for DPS, one for tanking.

If you have legs with +40 stam / +12 agi tanking enchant on them, they will actually do quite nicely for your dps. Unless ofc you have something else for the slot that is very good.

While attacking from behind +hit and expertise is in fact quite interchangeable, since the give the same increased chance to hit whether it's reducing miss chance or reducing dodge chance. However if you attack from the front expertise is more than twice as good as hit, since it lowers chance to parry as well. I say more than twice as good because when a boss parries an attack he gains a 40% attack speed bonus to his next attack and I'm pretty sure your tank and his healers would very much like to avoid that.

+40 Stam/+12 Agi vs +50 AP/+12 Crit

No, the nethercleft leg armor isn't good for DPS. You're giving up 38 free AP. That's the DPS equivalent of replacing 2 +8 Agi gems with 2 +12 Stam gems. The problem with swapping anything besides gloves is the lost enchant/gems. If I had to choose something besides having 2 sets of T4 shoulders, I'd use T4 chest for tanking and DPS. +6 Stats is universal, and +24 Agi from gems isn't a terrible alternative to +36 Stam.
