my question is, is the spellfire and spellstrike sets worth getting or should i just keep getting kara gear and moving up to gruuls and ZA gear. i just hit 70 and idk if i should spend my G on to make the armor or not i mean i know that both sets are good but how long will it last me.

Spellfire and Spellstrike doesn't see real upgrades(some stat upgrades that are damage sidegrades) til T6 gear.

Decide on it from there.

He stated it in this post. Not until you are approaching T6 gear.

If you just hit 70, and you don't know how long it takes to get t6, it will last you a year.

True dat. I hit 70 in February of 07. I do not yet have any piece of gear from a T6 instance.

Allow me to put it another way:
With spellfire/spellstrike and a couple kara pieces I can push over 1k dps fairly ez, and that is in 5 man instances with minimal buffs. That is rougly the same and sometimes better dps than those mages wearing gear from SSC/TK (T5). I've noticed that the gear from ZA and heroic MgT are sidegrades, sacrificing spell damage for stats or spell crit for spell haste.

Different but related questions, especially for people who were around for the last expansion: Since the Spellfire set is that good, is it overkill for a casual player with no ambitions beyond 5-mans? And at what point before the expansion (once we know when it's actually coming) would you stop sinking money into new stuff that might be outdated soon?

My mage is only level 51 (and she's hardly power leveling), and then it's 50+ days to craft all the cloth, and the expansion is coming... some day. I love shiny purple things as much as the next girl (well, not Prince, but other shiny purple things. Actually, Prince is okay, I guess.) But I play solo mostly, goof around with a lot of alts, do the very occasional five man. I have all the mats for Spellfire in the bank because I know it's the best thing since Ted Williams and all, but I'm greedy cheap not sure whether hanging on to 2k worth of stuff is worth it for what I do.

Edited because I am always calling Spellfire Spellstrike.

It is hard to determine that for someone. If you do not want to spend time grinding materials/etc to level tailoring and then get the amterials together to make the sets then don't. If you do not plan on going past 5 man dungeons and the occasional trip to Kara then it would be a 'waste' of money (assuming you bought all the mats/etc). The damage output is great, I have over 1100 fire damage unbuffed in my current gear (with spellfire) and around 1060-ish in my non-spellfire gear (gives me an additional 1k hp etc). It is completely up to the individual though.

Thank you very much - this is helpful for me. I know it's a matter of individual preference what you want to spend your money on, but it's good to hear from an experienced mage just how necessary those epics are for you in 5-mans. I used my druid to grind the mats but the opportunity cost is high - I could get 2k gold if I sold all those primals instead. And I'm not sure that's worth it for 3 pieces of gear for an alt who will probably never even do a heroic before the expansion (I'm kind of obsessed with leveling up as many alts as possible versus doing endgame stuff). OTOH I don't want to be a scrub on those few occasions I want to PUG something, hence my asking you good people.

I'd love to have all that pretty damage. I really enjoy throwing hot fire at people. (Is that so wrong?) But by the same token, I'd love to fly really fast too, and that's not worth 5k to me. Everything has to be weighed. I'll have to think about it. It's not like I'm dropping tailoring anyway.

I can see the benefits of having an epic flyer for getting around quickly and doing those 25 a day Dailies for loads of gold, I have 6k burning a hole in my pocket already but I just cant get away from the thought that its sooo much money for something that is perhaps more of a status symbol than a benefit. I might be wrong as I dont have one yet, anyone out there see 280% travel speed as a huge plus? or is it truely just a status symbol?

On the spellstrike, I'd have no problems spending the gold on getting the set as the patterns arent ddropping for me, but I managed to get the Hood made for me recently for just a 20g tip as I managed to grind the mats in less time than I had anticipated.

Does your character gather at all? For gatherers it's the single best investment you can make. For non-gatherers, I'd still recommend it, as you'll never understand again how you managed to live without it.

Spellstrike is less "hot" then spellfire though, t4 isnt that far off spellstrike.

The sunwell badge vendor gear is considerably better then spellstrike, so if youre collecting badges and thinking about spellfire, wait till the sunwell badge vendor is unlocked.

I completely agree. My hunter has his epic flyer, and everytime i get on my mage who doesnt have it, it is absolutely horrible. Its one of those things where once you get it, you dont know how you lived without it.

As others have stated, it really is not a status symbol. Pretty much all the players I run into on my server have one or are working towards one (I am about to loan 2k to my roommate so he can finally get his).

The epic flier is probably the best investment I have made (right along side of the epic tailoring sets for raiding).
