I am still new to Wow...

Frost mage 17/0/44

99% Pvp oriented.

Why...am I...jumping through all these hoops for gear? I am told a dozen different theories for what gear to work on getting...."Get your Gladiator Set" "Don't get Gladiator, it will be replaced in a month" "Get your Vindicator set, it's grrrreat", "Don't waste time on Vindicator, do arenas", "Save up some mats, work Kara/MT/UB/ETC for some blues and badges and stuffs"....

The list goes on, but I will not burden you with reading what I hear day in and day out.

So, I ask you...Mage Forum.....

I want to Pvp. I want good spell damage and 10k HP (at least) along with all the usual mods needed for pvp. I do not want to waste my time farming 5 different suits, all leading up to "THE SUIT".

What do I need, where should I get it, and how much of a pain in the *** will it be?

Thanks. :)

If you're honored with any of the Outland instance factions, they probably have a good starter piece of PvP gear for you that only costs a few gold. Beyond that depends on how much time you have to spend.

If you have the time, find a friend that just wants to farm some arena points and start a team. You'll likely be undergeared and lose a lot, but points will be forthcoming. In addition to that, do BGs to get some honor points for gear from there.

The thing about arenas, while they get you the best gear, you will not get it quickly without good gear already. So work on your gear from two fronts(10 games of Arena, and some BGs in your spare time). Plan out what pieces of arena gear you want first and fill in other slots with BG epics.

Additionally, I would suggest working on your reputation with two factions.

1)Either Aldor or Scryers. Your choice. This is for nice shoulder enchants.
2)Shattered Sun Offensive. For the nifty new helm enchant. You can do it via dailies and make a ton of gold in the process.

As you said:

To get THE SUIT, as it were, you have to have the gear to support getting it. Sure, you can get most of it without it, but it'll take forever and you'll always be missing two slots.

You can't go from complete crap to best of the best, WoW doesn't work that way. It's about a steady progression of gear until you reach the level you need. Every upgrade you get will be a step in that direction. Just as you can't go from 5 man blues to T6 epics, you can't go from just dinged gear to full Vengeful Gladiator's. You can get most of the way there without any other upgrades, but it's a very slow process. Unless you're winning a lot, more than 10 games a week will not benefit you and get you a higher rating in arenas(required for full vengeful and to get gear at a decent speed), and you won't be winning a lot until you get some gear under your belt.

So PvP. Do both arenas(10 games a week til you start winning more than you lose) and BGs. And have fun with it.

Personally i would Arena when your teams on and then BattleGround the rest of your time if what you have fun and are interested in while playing.
Its true that S1 arena gear will end up getting replaced, however it can take a while to fully deck yourself out. I think its more important to have a solid resilence base and dmg base as quick as you can.
Then when you do have 100-150 resil, you can start saving for S3 and Vindicator. Replacing the S1 gear last.
really thats what i did, might not be the best course of action, but it worked for me just fine. I'm still not done replacing season 1 gear and im over 300 resil.

generally, time in = reward gained.

you want that gladiator set that took me 4 months to get.
you want that merc set that took me another 4 months.
you want that veng set that im still grinding shoulders for.

the first 2 you can grind off in a couple weeks, the last one will be a 'freebie' when S4 comes out.

if you cant handle the grind of getting pwned in pvp, then go farm Hogger.

arena is fair shot. skill sucks + gear sucks = rating sucks.

Here is a nice site for some mage pvp tips.

If your rating gets to low, drop arena team and make a new one to start over at 1500, you will face better competition there, but competition leads to improved skills.

With S4 coming, just get all the arena point you can now and hold em until that gear is released and load up on it, that will lvl your playing field a bit, although gear won't make up for skill in the long run.
#10REDACTED, Posted: Apr 01 2008 at 11:45 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Never said I was frost nova'ed. I said I had 0 chills stacked....which is how Ice Lance damage is calculated. With 0 stacks, you should crit around 500, unless you're geared to the teeth.
#11REDACTED, Posted: Apr 01 2008 at 12:06 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Thanks. It's not really pvp skill I was asking for tips on, but you can never get enough POV's on tactics. As far as the Arena points go, I only lost 4 games so far....I don't think I need to scrap my team just yet.

Also here is a point calculator for arena. And scraping the team is more for when you get around 1250 rating, really not worth it any more IMO. Only losing 4 games is a good start, should improve from there.

Since no one seemed to try to actually answer your question (that you asked 3-4 times) I will try.

Seems the word right now is S4 will be comming out in around a month. So saving arena points for that would be a good start. While waiting and doing BGs you may as well get the vindi belt, bracers, boots, ring, neck.. in that order. Even now they will be replaced when s4 comes out having BG versions of S3 still can't hurt. Then you can keep those when S4 is here and start upgrading your 5 peice set with s2 from honor and S4 from points. Once you have your s2 sets from honor then you can start replacing the Vindi sets with the s4 versions(since honor is much eaiser to come by then arena points).

Plus as your gearing/skilling up you'll notice that your arena points will grow faster per week. With some luck you'll have full s4 by the time s5 comes out :)

On your other note. Yes, BGs can suck now in greens/blues. But it will get better. I used to pug BGs and run AV when I was 40/21/0 and in my T4/spellfire sets. I would get wtf pwnt. Then I got into a guild and just ran premades (no AV due to the 2 hour queue times). Now I have over 400 res, 900 damage, 11k HP, and am frost. Went into AV for the first time in months a few days ago and it was fantastic. Unless that tower had more then 3 people guarding it I was gonna get it. Now I got to be the PvP freak pwning all the guys in PvE blues.
#14REDACTED, Posted: Apr 01 2008 at 1:06 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Thanks Dark. That's pretty much what I was looking for. With all the choices, it was hard to know which one was priority. So, the Vindicator set is a "BG Version" of S3 from Arenas? I hear a lot about "Oh, thats like 1.5 of S1/.75 of S1" etc...but I never really knew what they meant (for example, the new blues that just came out that have resil have been said to be .5 S1).

The purchasable pvp blues are for people to use to fill in spaces where they don't have other pieces of pvp gear so they can save up honor for the soon-to-be arriving honor bought s2 and soon-to-be arriving arena point S4 gear. The idea is if your in PVE gear doing BGs your gonna get annihilated, if your in PVP blues doing BGs your still gonna get annihilated just not as fast and you may be able to take a few guys with ya...

It's correct. He ground it out when it was actually the max arena set, not when someone could lose BG's for 3 days and get a full set.

Yeah, When a new season starts up you can get chest, legs, hands, helm, shoulders, wep with arena points and feet, wrists, belt, ring, neck from BGs. That's basicly your "full" s3/s4 set.

The new blues are is a entry lvl set for the arena sets. Makes it a little eaiser for people that just hit 70 and/or PvE alot to get a starter pvp set without having to BG a crap ton like you used to have to do.

Yes, I did see your pretty post. But when the OP basiclly asks, "where do you get the PvP gear and what order do you do it in?" and you answer with, "You need to plan the order you get gear in" it just seems to me like the question wasnt answered. I can write a two thousand word essay on the migration patterns of birds, but it won't answer the question of why do they always crap on my car.

Sure it can. If you're parking under the migration path of birds, you get your car crapped on.

I won't comment on your original question as it's already been answered, but I will comment on the below:

Try reading what your spells do.

Winter's Chill increases the chance of your spell critting by 2% for each stack (up to 10%).

Ice Lance does **** all damage normally, but triple damage on FROZEN targets, i.e. those under the effects of FN or Frostbite.

If you blink out of FN/Shatter then Ice Lance won't hit for as much (as long as you remove it before the mage starts casting the IL).

Also maybe if you worded your responses a little more politely, checked the facts (see Icelance and S1 not always being available for honour) then people might be a little more inclined to help you.

I'm a casual PVPer and have started working on getting the best items available to me from the BGs. I'm not a big fan of Arena yet love the idea of getting the old "latest" set from BG vendors when the new "latest" set becomes available with the new season.

As we can all spend our HP straight away since patch 2.4 I've concentrated on getting vindicator, this can be achieved quite quickly if you're determined enough.

as already stated, this is when gladiator was only available through arena play. fwiw, people are now losing BGs, on purpose, to get quick tokens to turn in for honor to get gladiator/vind gear. blizz F-ed up BGs.

Sooooo....you are saying that with full greens, I can take a 2v2 against people in full T6?

you are not facing people in T6! you are facing people in blues and purps, which is where you are/should be before entering arena. dont show up to NASCAR in moms minivan and QQ cause you lost. so many people gear up through BGs that it makes it so frustrating to lose when they cant pull their own weight rockin their lvl 61 greens. on the fun side, 2-shotting a mage as a Ret pally strokes the epeen hard.

missing information. sounds like you lost the first 4, dropped to under 13xx and began winning against equally undergeared/underskilled players.
