Gearing two specs...Follow

Hello, I've recently gotten my paladin to lvl 60, from what I understand I should continue all the way to 70 (maybe 68-69) as ret in order to reach that point the fastest way possible.

However, I've yet to choose between tanking and healing for my little paladin, I've never had a toon dedicated to either, yet I've done both and enjoyed each thoroughly. This is where my true problem is derived.

Since I cannot bring myself to decide which path I should take, I was wondering how difficult it would be to gear myself (through quests) for either position, I've already blown a bit of gold on some decent BoE blues for either spec. (The essence focuser, Crystal-pulse shield, and a crystalforged sword just to name a few.)

I'm curious to know if there are any tough decisions between healing and tanking gear through quests along the way to 70. I do what I can to stick with plate (even for healing, but I'm willing to use mail in that area) but I fear that more tough choices such as the ones faced in completing Overlord await me.

Basically...
-Is it hard gearing for two specs while relying on a third?
-Will I be repeatedly faced with tough decisions between quest rewards?
-How much of an indecisive ******* is Jon of the Dead?

I think I did a rather poor job of describing my question, so if there's anything that needs clarification please say so.

Do you for sure want to tank or heal (in other words ditch Ret entirely)?

If not then you may run into some tough choice spots later on in the game but to be honest I can't think of any. I can't speak to throwing that 3rd wrench into the mix.

If you do want to ditch ret (and since you don't know which direction you want to go) then why not respec to a Prot/Holy hybrid and tank/heal your way through the lower level instances? Much of the gear I got was appropriate for both (this is 60-65 or so, not 66-70) so while I had a tank set and a heal set both were very easy to get together.

That way you have test runs of the specs and have a better idea of what you'll ultimately decide.

Also note that even if you spec one you'll likely end up with a fair set of the other. If you've got a Shaman/Druid/Priest healer it's not really likely they're going to roll on (or begrudge you) that plate healing helm even if you're prot-specced. You may have a little trouble the other way as 2 of 3 tanking specs wear plate but if the tank already has it then no one will probably have a problem with you rolling on it.

Split your focus and you tend to hurt yourself. "Jack of all trades, master of none" is a saying that best captures the idea.

Not saying you shouldn't have an off set, just saying that if you don't make up your mind and dedicate yourself to one or the other as a main eventually you will end up mediocre at both, at best.

Prot will be the hardest to gear up for if you plan to make the journey into Karazahn. Holy is no fun for leveling 60-70, even if you plan on doing it mostly in instances. But come end game it is easier to gear up for and find a raid slot. Either way healer/tank you will find a group.

Sort of - I had a Prot/Holy hybrid until it became clearly unviable at 66 or so. until then it was great for flexibility and determining what I wanted to do.

For sure at 70 it's a bad idea but I think 60-65 or so you can heal or tank many Outland instances to help determine what direction to go.

I don't know that I'd try to maintain three sets though. That's a lot of bank/bag space and a lot of extra work. Besides, anything you get at 60 (if you're not using it) is going to be nigh useless at 70. Heck if you're tanking, anything you get at 68 is nigh useless but for getting drops out of SL, SV, SH, and TK instances.

I held 10 points in holy for the longest time before I settled into a true tanking build. It's good for when you don't trust your healers, like the paranoid freak that I am.

There will be a few times that it will happen. One quest that comes to mind is the Dimensius the All-Devouring quest in Netherstorm that rewards you with:

Dabiri's Enigma:

or

Starcaller's Leggings:

Both are great depending on which way you want to go but at the end of the day you can always get around it with instance drops and rep rewards. It really depends on whether you want to grind instances/rep (which you may need to do anyway gearing up for heroics and raiding) for gear if you choose one piece over another.

Check out what pieces you need to heal or tank the heroics and kara in Dil's and CapJack's Healing and Tanking stickies.

You may find that there is a piece you can substitute in instead...

It just means more time spent on gearing up as well as possibly gear hogging in instances if pieces drop on seperate bosses in the same dungeon.

Having taken 3 other classed to 70, that Dimensius quest is the only one I can really think of that makes you chose between a tanking item and a plate healing item.

I am going to be doing the same thing as you Jon, in trying to get a set of gear for both Prot and Holy specs. I have already decided I am going to chose the tanking trinket there because tanking trinkets are hard to come by at 70 and there are a couple of other options for the leg healing slot, inclduing some non-plate items (specifically some nice mail healing gear that lacks a spell crit, but has some nice healing and MP5).

Your best bet is going to be to run instances with no other plate wearers so you can scoop up any and all plate drops. By the time you have run each level 70 instance a couple times you should find yourself well on your way to a nice tanking set and a nice healing set.

I feel your pain Jon. I still switch back and forth from healing to tanking all the time (usually because I can't find the complement to whatever I'm specced).

The way I got both my tanking and healing sets up was to tank instances with a non-pally healer. That basically guarantees you all the drops you'd want. It is going to be a lot more difficult to get all the pieces you want going in as ret. And as others have said, focus on getting one set of gear, and just grab stuff for your other sets as it comes. Otherwise you'll be gearing forever.

As far as quest rewards go, the quest others have mentioned (Dimensius the All-Devouring) is the only one that comes to mind where you'd need to choose between healing and tanking gear. I recommend always taking a libram if it's available, and don't throw it away. You'll undoubtedly really want it later.

i would recommend speccing into what you wish to get into now. lvl up mostly by running instances. if you are the tank, you will get tank drops. if you are the healer, you will get healer drops. if you are dps, you wont get ****.

running instances is a fast way to gain xp and also allows you to hit the rep ceiling without burning all your quests. trust me, lvl 60 quests in Hellfire are easier than 10-20 runs of SH when rep grinding to exalted. later you can use Alla to cherry pick which quests will benefit you the most.

lastly, keep 4-5 sets of gear: solo dps, healing(max heal, max regen, pvp), tanking(5man, max avoid, resist). luckily, some of these will overlap making it easier to hang onto. dps and healing needs to be in your bag at all times, no matter the spec.
