Why did you roll a paladin?Follow

#1 Mar 30 2008 at 1:14 PM Rating: Decent
I am posting this because I like to have insight on what people think and this seems like people might like this post.

A few other things please don't disregaurd my new spells and abilities post to post here I am more concerned with that one.
Also I am thinking about puttting this on the other class forums but I want to see how well this does here first.

Finally for me I rolled a paladin because where else do I get to be a holy man but still run around swinging a giant axe into the face of others... =P.

I had played a Warlock, a Warrior and a Hunter horde/alliance, quit wow and went and played a Rogue type class on EQII. Got strong armed back into WoW by my brother who still lives in the home town, in a different province. I knew I wanted to play a healer, since I had never done it before.

Sick of all the alliance starting areas so I knew I was going to be a Draenei. Knew that priests and druids were very slow lvl 1-20, or even 40 in the case of S priests, had tried Shaman as horde and it just didn't float my boat. Pally was somewhat new to me having mainly played Horde so I rolled it.

I had also played a Pally in Daoc, Diablo II and FFXI. So yeah, I guess part of it has to do with playing a goody goody do gooder type who can lay down the pain.

I've played every class up to level 20 with aspirations of gaining insight and preferences.

I deleted my other characters and turned my Paladin into my main toon shortly after.

Simply put, the Paladin is capable of fitting almost any roll in a party and seemed less of a nuisance while grinding.

I've always thought Belfs to be the coolest looking, asthetically speaking.

Part of it is an underlying messiah RP complex that demands I do good things in every scenario or medium I participate in. Give me any game, tabletop, pen-and-paper or video, and I'll be the good guys. I like being a good guy.

Part of it is the feeling you get when you pull an entire camp of mobs with the sure knowledge that you're going to win the ensuing melee.

And part of it is annoying people in world PvP by flatly refusing to die.

I also like hammers, and think that overall they're an underrepresented weapon in fantasy settings. Every hero wants a big sword and every bad guy wants an axe. Me, I prefer hitting things with blunt instruments.

I've been a Paladin ever since I played FFIV (FFII American) and I loved that game, and Cecil was an awesome character and he was a Paladin. Then in D&D I played a Paladin, and in WoW I now play a Paladin. Something about the class just speaks to me. I couldn't do Paladin in FFXI though, just didn't work for me.

Before WoW, I was a Diablo 2: LOD fanatic.

I was a Paladin then (Hammerdin, if anyone is familiar with the game), and greatly preferred the character.

I love the concept of the Paladin in any game; protecting the light and defending the evil.

My choice was based on all the lore in WC3. I enjoyed seeing the lore of the rise and fall of the Silver Hand (well not quite the rise...)and thought they were pretty cool. Come WoW I actually rolled a human warrior as my brother rolled an Orc Warrior, but didnt like there limited role as tanks at endgame...

Ironic that I choose to tank anyway. Bah... At least I have choice though. Take that bro.

I hope that is what you meant, so, fixed for you :)

Also same reason I rolled a Paladin. I liked what I had read about them, but honestly, it's the type of character I am always drawn to in games: the one whose primary job is keeping others safe, while dishing out the pain. Later came to know that the "dishing out the pain" part was lacking, but it still fits me better than any other class.

I serve all the pain dishes I need on my rogue. He's who I log onto when getting hit by big musclebound bad guys gets tiring. Or when I just feel like ambushing someone.

Dunno where some of you guys are getting the idea of "dishing the pain" from. The only pain my paladin gives away is the painfully slow kill time for any mob under the sun, and let's not even talk about mana-drain mobs.

But anyway I rolled a Paladin because that's me. If I'm not Lawful Good in real life, I don't know what I am. I played a Paladin in FFXI and discovered a talent for tanking, hence that's what my WoW paladin became too.

In general I actually prefer a barbarian-type class but I wouldn't give my pally for a warrior at any time. Except when I'm trying to kill stuff on the new Island...

Original description lead one to believe Paladins could deal good damage, and that was true early on. Not so much at the upper levels (hence why I said I found it to be lacking later on).

I have played so many DPS classes that I wanted something different..and i have found it.

I used to think upon seeing a group of mobs, How can I pull 1 or 2 away so I can kill them without to much trouble.

Now what I think upon seeing a group is, How can I pull more mobs so I can make this worth my time.

I played a Rogue in PvP before TBC.. nuff said.

After a few cases of level drains in other rpg games I found the paladin to be immune to this effect. After this I mostly played paladins in any role playing game and found more and more that the mind set of the class suits me.

When starting to play WoW, now three years ago I started out with my pally and he is still my main and only one to get to 70. I have to admit that I was a bit disapointed at first with some of the aspects Blizzard befitted their pallies with, but in due time I came to love my pally for what it was: a versatile hybrid. I came to love the way I could jump in to fill in any role to some extent, to have a broader overview of the fights than most other classes and the real ability to prevent the **** from hitting the fan. I think I'm not the only one who has heard the words "wow, I was sure we were going to wipe there".

After that, to roll a pure DPS class seemed to limit my options too much, so I stuck to my pally.

And the fact I can heal a horde character when I want to (JoL/JoW) or become a big nuisance when a pvp situation arises.

I started playing a Pally because at the time no one really knew what any of the classes were capable of. The play-style philosophies hadn't been worked out yet, and you saw many a Paladin mindless melee away with a 2H and Seal of the Crusader up for the faster attack speed. As all classes refined, so did mine. We got shunted over into the role of a healer. I did a fair bit of tanking early on as well, but the tools to put us on par with Warriors just weren't there at the time so it worked fine in lesser content, but when you had to start competing for that slot.. It just wasn't going to happen.

Had I known that Paladins would be restricted to healing, and tanking lesser content when a Warrior wasn't available I probably wouldn't have made my first one for a little while. I did get into healing however and ended up levelling 2 to 60.

With TBCs talent revisions I got my wish. One of my Pallies respecced Protection and became my main (though I was REALLY a Horde player, I only played Alliance for the Pallies) up until I quit WoW.

I returned and rolled a pair of BE Pallies, one Protection (current main) and one Holy and levelled them both to 70. I rolled THESE ones because I wanted to tank Hordeside, which has been my major occupation since.

I've got to say though... I wish we got the equivalent of Diablo II's "Zeal" for Paladins... I replaced my standard attack left-click with that back then... Imagine swinging 20 times at all targets adjacent to you every time you attacked :D

I wanted to level one toon in every class (and most races) to 20 just for kicks. Blood Elf became available and I never tried a pally before... so thus was born, with a silly name, my pally who now is on track to be my second 70.

Honestly, I learned a ton from tanking that has helped out my DPS play. And it's kinda nice to have the counter balance that I have now in play-styles between a lock, a tank and my raiding rogue.

My buddie had broght his laptop over for a year to let me play (I too was a huge Diablo II LOD player), everytime he left, "Sim - you have to get this game". He was speaking of WOW.

I lvld a rogue to 17, a lock to 18 and a warrior to 22. Blah.

What it came down to was a conversation that I had with a friend of mine who started playing at v1.0. The great Triangle. Healer - Tank - Dps

Everyone loves a killer. Everyone needs at tank and healer. Still holds true now at v2.4 I can log on with either priest or pally and say Tank or Heals lfg and get spammed with 4-7 pst in moments. Probally 'cause most players just want to dps.

Why a Paladin?
Just do it.
Dish out the damage, Heal the group, pull 5 mobs and spit on the dead bodies.
Everytime I log onto my Shammy, I have fun.
Everytime I log onto my Priest, I love the crowd.
Everytime I log onto my Pally, I feel like James Bond after girl #4!!!
Nobody does it better!!!

Wasn't Cecil a Black Knight though? Could change at one point, I never got far into that one.

I started playing a pally for some reason that goes beyond even me. I made a female BElf when BC came out, and Paladin was the default selection. I made her only to check out her jokes and other vocal emotes. Next thing I know, Prince is smacking me in the face as I'm throwing a shield at him. Funny how things work int his world.

I leveled my first toon to about 30 and that was my Hunter. That was before I even knew the AH existed and Stormwind still had the "gate" closed on Bonechewer, which is an old realm.

I left the Hunter as I was so confused and the core group I played in had only a paladin as a healer, and all melee classes. I did not want to play a mage and so started a Shadow Priest. Since the Pally was a Holy spec it worked perfectly 90% of the time. 70 levels later and TBC ruined PvP for the Shadow Priest as nothing scaled properly.

Then came along my Rogue, who is sitting at 68 right now as being played on and off again. She was rolled to just melee dps, but has been surpassed by my friend who got his rogue to 70 before me, making her semi retired until I feel like getting her to level 70 for Arena fun.

Now I am power leveling a Paladin as we speak. Lots of fun, still can heal, and when it comes to grabbing mobs and having fun, there is not much better. Nothing like soloing melee mobs with Ret Aura, Shield Spike, Consecration, Blessing of Sanctuary, Reckoning, and Redoubt to just make your screen fill up with tons of numbers. I took a screenshot of my lvl 41 paladin taking on 9 mobs at once and what the screen looked like. Many have become Pally Envious due to that pic and to this day some do not realize the strength of a paladin. I will say that they are fairly slow to level at times, but they are damn fun when solo or paired with one other toon. Hoping to get him to level 58 in the next week or two to head over to TBC.

I started with the classic Goody goody stereotype, like others I see, and liked it, then got really bored and regretted it. I like the class, but I would like to see revisions but not an over haul.

Plus, the second highest character I have is a warrior. Big Armor, Big Weapons, big damage (or so I thought).

Many times over :)

Most recently I was in Magister's Terrace and the DPS all died like scrubs at 25% on Kael. Was just myself and my Paladin healer. We kept healing each other through the air phase, keeping our mana up, then beat on Kael/used Hammer of Wrath when on the ground. We managed to kill him leaving the DPS completely stunned and speechless. A very proud moment nonetheless :)

This same healer helped me widdle down Prince in Karazhan basically by myself from about 8%. There were 2 DPSers alive, but they were OOM most of the time so the only other DPS outside mine was the Mage wanding with a spell here and there from the Mage and Elemental Shaman.
