I believe that block value just decreases your damage taken when blocking. You really shouldnt be worrying about getting it too high. From what I have read your a better off just stacking stam over block value. I believe the order of importance for gear with a 70 running heroics would be:

1. Getting 490 def
2. Getting Uncrushable (102.4 avoidance)
3. Gettting 200 Spell damage
4. Getting 12.5k HP
then worry about block value

Maybe your guild mate was talking about block rating? Block rating increases the amount blocked which is where a prot pally gets most of his threat from.

Block Value will do nothing for your tps. What he told you was wrong.

Warriors do get an increase in threat with block value, for a paladin the stat is still useful as your going to be blocking around 50% of incoming attacks so taking say 300 damage means in trash taking your taking very little damage and during boss fights it helps to even out the damage you take (tanks almost always die from a damage spike rather then a lack of constant healing).

As said aim for those stats then you'll been hopefully tanking more major stuff and will have more of an idea of what stats suit your tanking style.

Heroic mobs/bosses can't crush you.

The priority for getting into heroics for a tank is:
13k HP (12.5k is fine for the easier heroics like SP/UB/Mech)
490 defense (you don't actually NEED 490 def to be uncrittable in a heroic, but you may as well get there becase you need it for raids)

i dont know i do hsp with under 11k starting out and i was just fine uncrit and uncrushable when i went in i was really working on oting gear so didnt shoot for hp only. i would say get uncrit before 12.5k hp just for the fact cc dont always work the way you want it to and getting crit then anormal hit or two could hurt more than 3 normal hits. wich hit me for about 2-2.5k after 298 blocked and think i'm at 14k armor now. dont know i'm at hospital for daughter and i loged out in healing set to see what i was for somereason lol.

to op block rateing is for threat block value is for the amount of damage you block. warriors like block value due to the extra threat added to (if i remember right) shield slam.

More block value doesn't mean more threat per block...BUT...

Say you have 350 block value, and around 23% dodge, (maybe 19 parry and 24% block also).....and you switch to gear with about 700 block value, 17% dodge, (and the same parry and possibly but not mandatory more block).....you can increase your threat a nice bit....

I recently made a switch with about those numbers (Im at the end of tier 5 content)...I found on aoe pulls..and pulls where I'd tank more than one trash mob (and couldn't use consecrate)...the less dodge, and more damage blocked.....seemed to be about even with what damage I took before the gear switch...but I had a lot more threat

I'm not saying get rid of complete avoidance and stack dodge, but if your damage intake isn't bad...losing complete avoidance (mainly dodge)...and gaining some nice block value, and possible some block rating, you can increase your "tps"

(((For raid boss tanking I have a set with about 22% parry, 24% dodge, 22% block, and about 450 block value (350 spell dmg) ...for aoe and multi trash tanking I have a set with about 18% dodge, 19% parry, 26% block, and right around 700 block value (450 spell dmg)....and for offtanking, and single trash tanking I have a set that is about in the middle of those two, with some more mana......In all of those sets I am at about 21.5k health raid buffed..and uncrushable and uncrittable)))

13k or 12.5k is a bit much for a paladin to obtain without getting heroic gear. It's easy for Warriors, their base hp is a good 2k higher than ours. I'd say 11k is a good starter for heroics, which will increase as you get heroic gear and badge rewards. Definitely uncrittable with ~200 spell damage.
