I kept my Embrace of the Viper set all the way to level 39 or so, and am still wearing most of the pieces (a huge embarrassment, since now that it's broken up the set bonuses aren't so useful to me, and they don't have stats I really need). Now I'm looking into getting mail gear, and while I know anything would be an improvement, I'd like to know if there's anything specific I should be looking for. I have no problem with wearing cloth and/or leather if they have the stats I need and decent armor value, though right now I really want to go all mail. I want to be crunchy again instead of squishy.

Right now my priorities in terms of which stats I want are +healing, mp5, and intellect--spirit and stamina are also good--strength, agility, and anything else, I am ignoring. I'd also prefer stuff that drops or comes from quests, rather than crafted gear, since I only have about 30g left after buying my mount and really don't want to rely on the AH for gear.

I might get blasted for this, but it is what has worked for me at lvl 65. I no longer stick to mail. If it has better +healing/+spelldmg than what I have, I use it. I've found a lot of cloth gear that has better stats than my shammie gear. BUT if you're insistent on wearing Mail...start gathering the Element set. It drops in UBRS, Stratt and I honestly can't remember where else. I had started gathering it and hit 58, went to Outlands, and all of a sudden my greens were better than any of the blues I got in Azeroth. The Kilt is VERY hard to get from the Element set, it drops off the Barron in Stratt and is BoP.
Good luck!!!

If you intent to stay restoration all the way, I suggest you pick up as much +healing as you can (but don't sacrifice too much intellect for it).

And for two somewhat dubious reasons:

1) It will greatly buff your Healing Stream Totem; which - believe it or not - is one of your major sources of healing around these levels.

2) Downranking; at your level you can get away with more severe downranking since the ranks are much closer together. In essence this will create a good amount of virtual mp5 for you.

Oh, and I'm sure you're already doing this, but until you reach higher levels: using Healing Wave over Lesser Healing Wave (What level is Chain Heal again? This one beats all pretty much) helps a lot also. Until you get chain heal that is (After which I usually respec to remove all my Healing Wave talents, as they're just not good enough.)

Healing Wave is ALWAYS better to use than Lesser Healing Wave. At level 70 (which I know you're not at yet) Healing Wave is almost twice as much heals per mana as LEsser Healing Wave.

At the point you're at, if you want to stick with mail you will pretty much be relegated to "of the Eagle" gear. You may be able to fine some accessories (neck, rings, cloak, trinkets) with either +healing or +dmg/healing to give your healing spells a little more oomph. Honestly it's just not needed.

With a decent mana pool you could effectively heal BRD (at the approriate level) with 0 +healing gear.

For a quick recap:

1. Stack Int gear if you insist on wearing mail. There's very little before Outland that has +healing on it.

2. Use Healing Wave (downranked if you want to) on the tank in your instances and use Chain Heal if the melee DPS starts taking damage. If the ranged DPS or you start taking damage, use Lesser Healing Wave.

3. Look for necklaces, rings, cloaks, and possibly trinkets with +healing or +spell dmg/haling to give you a slight boost.

That may be, but generally you do not have the time to cast a full healing wave in PvP (barring the occasional Arena happening). In all other situations Chain Heal tends to be the better choice - healing more than Lesser Healing Wave, being cheaper, and [b]if[b] it chains, healing more than Healing Wave also.

In an instance, if only one target took damage, and you're certain noone else will, you can cast Healing Wave. Otherwise it's still chain heal.

Bigdaddy is more right at your current level though, healing wave tends to be stronger than chain heal, especially with only one target being damaged. Chain heal becomes better every level though.

Ah...just fyi, this is a somewhat old post. I'm at 48 now, nearly 49, and got a ton of good drops last night (plus some goodies from a jewelcrafting friend, though I can't use all of it yet.) I think you can check the link in the first post to see what I'm wearing now? Anyway, once I get an upgrade for the shoulders I think I'll be pretty with what I've got. Some leather, but no more cloth, which is good.

As for my playstyle--I generally use mana spring rather than healing stream, as I have very little trouble keeping the groups healed myself, and far more keeping my (and the usual pally tank's) mana up. Not to mention the fact that if I used healing stream, chances are the group would run out of range quickly--with mana spring, I only have to keep track of myself. I also drop mana tide frequently.

I use Chain Heal mainly when we have melee DPS, since that means I can get a moderate heal off on the tank and top off the DPS as well. Generally I keep three ranks of Healing Wave and one of Lesser Healing Wave on my action bars, and use lower ranks as needed--Lesser Healing Wave is reserved for quick heals, such as when one group member has taken a lot of damage. I'll use LHW to give me some extra time to throw a bigger heal their way. I'll also use it on any DPS that take damage and aren't close enough to other members to make Chain Heal worthwhile, since it takes less time than a regular Healing Wave and means I won't be spending time finishing up their heal when I need to start healing the tank.

I think I know what I'm doing, though advice is always welcome. :)

You're in good shape. Although I'll hate you if you got that shield on your first run; it took me 16 (no lie!) to get it.

First off, ignore spirit. Those "of the owl" pieces would be better as "of the eagle" since shamans have no way to regen mana inside the 5-second rule. Between totems, shields, and healing we're almost constantly in the 5 second rule. m/5 and--at lower levels--INT is your friend.

Soon you'll be able to do the sunken temple for the Mini-mana-tide trinket.

And for the love of all that is holy, GET NATURE'S SWIFTNESS!
