38/0/23 decent for Kara and Gruuls?Follow

#1 Mar 28 2008 at 8:16 AM Rating: Decent
I'm currently running a 38/0/23 build and my guild is pushing through Kara and getting ready for Gruuls. Am FSW tailor atm, and trying to blend the balance between dmg and crit to maximize ISP. Thinking that getting Quagmarren's Eye and the New trinket from Hero Mag Terrace would rock out dps. Any other suggestiong on build, or gear to help maximize effectiveness??

Your build looks pretty decent as it is. I dont profess to be the end all of talent specs, but there are a few tweaks I would suggest.

Here is (roughly) what I would do. With preferential changes possible as noted below.

1st: It seems that you are holding onto some pvp talent points. Instant howl of terror being the primary one. This is super handy for pvp and arena, and when soloing large numbers of (non-elite) adds. In a raid, especially 25 mans. I dont think I've ever used this. If I were to dump these 2 points elsewhere, it would be either suppression, Imp. CoA, or (most likely) Amp Curse/CoExh for afflic tree - or improved immolate or demonic embrace for other trees.

2nd: You need to choose whether you want Ruin, or Unstable Affliction. Ruin is fun to see the big SB crits pop up (and super handy in pvp). However, and this is BIG - so will your threat! and thats not fun to see. UA will give you a more steady, consistent threat generation that is easier to manage and wont leave you standing there doing nothing for 30 seconds waiting for your threat to drop again so you can resume dps'ing - which will happen with big SB crits.

Here is a more consistent dps, and threat efficient RAID build. IMHO.

AmpC & CoExh is more pvp I know, but youd be surprised how handy the amp can come in when you need to kite something, or make things easier on someone else who needs to avoid a mob. You mentioned Gruuls and kara. A few things that come to mind already are Amp curse doom on curator, and Kiting tin man (earlier in fight b4 hes slow) or put on roar to give you more time to recast fear on his way back. Also the Maulgar fight has a boss that tends to be more mobile (cant remember name off top of head) and the slow tends to be a handy thing there at the right times.

Also suppression, although not really necessary, is handy. both to reduce the amount of hit you need as a deep afflic build, and to reduce those pesky full resists. (one in the same I know, but hey).

my 2 cents.

Cheers

You need alot more + hit if you expect to use your Shadowbolts for damage in Kara and beyond. You need to worry about getting to the 16% hit cap much more than you need to worry about more crit. Also, since your gear is missing the +hit you need, you have to consider taking suppression in the mean time. The 10% hit to your affliction spells will at least start to make up for your gear deficiencies. For raiding, two of the easiest palces to pick up those 5 points are Improved Howl of Terror and Pyroclasm. Since you have dark pact, you could remove the 5th from life tap. Even with Suppression maxed you will still only be at 13.09% hit. That's a 4% chance to miss on boss fights which is still not ideal. The 14% chance to miss with your shadowblots is a problem though.

To be honest, I think you should focus on gemming your armor to get to at least 6% +hit and take unstable affliction. UA is one our strongest DoT. I think that UA with the proper amount of raid boss hit rating is more effective than Shadowbolts with a 14% chance to miss. You will feel slightly less effective on trash mobs but should do much better damage on bosses.

I would move to a build that takes at least Unstable Affliction and Bane. Then move back to ruin once you are closer to 16% +hit and 15% +crit. At that point Ruin and some of the destruction builds really outshine deep affliction, but not until you have enough +hit to make your direct damage spells more effective.
