I hit 46 today and am looking at options on the AH. I am having some trouble trying to decide between "of Agility" and "of the Monkey" gear. Sometimes the oA items can have like 5 or 6 (on occasion as much as 10 but I think that's because of the **** poor options on the AH sometimes) more agility than the otM items. I could usually go with oA items on my hunter because I usually didn't get hit much but as a straight up melee, albeit a sneaky one, it seems I need to be mindful of my HP as well.
Prices of the two types are usually comparable. Sometimes an otM might be more sometimes an oA might be more. Really all the prices suck either way. "of the bear" costs like 3 gold while "of the monkey" or "of agility" can cost like 45 gold depending on the items.

I have ratingbuster so I can see that item X may have 0.235% more crit than item Y but that really doesn't mean much to me. It's hard to gauge what kind of difference an increase like that makes compared to the HP lost.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Whatever you can get, TBH.

Gear doesn't matter at low levels; I'm going to level a warrior to 70 using random gear I get questing just to prove how little it really does someday.

I was using this on my lvl 49 warrior for bgs. Non-twinked, everything was random plate greens i picked up off AH and it was ridiculously fun/easy. Mind you anyone with half a brain can see that the axe I linked is by far and away the best 2H weapon you can get for lvl 43-49.

Pick one up, its well worth it.

Of Agility gear sucks. Stamina has saved my butt at lower levels more than having agility gear. I bought the cheap clefthoof kit for my rogue's leggings to give me an edge for leveling and pvp (purchased at 19 and I'll use them 'til I get to Outland). In encounters with trash mobs that I normally should not have survived I normally have 100-300 hp left (+10-30 stam). The way you can survive fights with your rogue is to either kill the mob really fast, dodge a lot, or have a lot of health. The last of which has been incredibly handy and easier to do at lower levels (pre-60).

If not doing enough damage is your problem then upgrade your weapon. At lower levels especially a weapon upgrade yields way better results than more armor. Armor can't compensate for a crummy weapon. Worry about balancing your stats out when you hit 70 and only visit the AH when your gear is starting to fall way behind your current level. For my new rogue at least there's not much difference statwise between a 15 green and 25 green maybe 2 stat points, and this trend remains the same for green items until you hit outland. I do however have gear (Mostly weapons, a shoulder and a chest) for levels 30-35 so I'll have incentive to level and that's when I finally saw significant changes worth purchasing.

Guess I'll mostly go of the Monkey for now. If that isn't available I'll take whatever I can find.

I don't have a lot of chances to do instances so weapon options are pretty crumby as well now. There is a nice blue sword for like 250G but I can't exactly justify that expenditure. It is a good deal more damage than my current weapon but I may end up finding something on the AH the next day that does more damage and is like 2G because of the level differences.

I used that on my hunter as well. I don't think you can get of the bandit stuff until 50+ and it might be 60+. At least I haven't seen any so far in the 40s but I could be not seeing it. I will probably use that when it is available because it does seem to have a little bit of everything I might need in general.

Unless it's really stupid cheap, save your gold. Quest rewards and instance drops should be fine well into your 50s. Hell, I used the Thrash Blade well into Outland content. Just check the item lists on Alla or Wowhead for quest-able pieces for what you need and pray for good instance drops. Personally, I made it a point to run a few instances (SM, BRD, etc) a number of times specifically for XP and certain drops. You don't "need" phat lootz. They can help a bit, but really, save your gold. Epic mounts are awesome.

With that said: Of the Monkey until Of the Bandit becomes available.

'of the Bandit' is Outland-only. That means 58+ lvl.

All I had when leveling my rogue were green items, which I was upgrading every 6-10 levels. The only exception were weapons. Got a rare sword in 30+. At 45+ got epic sword Bloodrazor, which served me till the Outlands.

Survival is also important for rogue, so I think 'of the Monkey' would benefit you more.

Of the Bandit > Of the Monkey > Of Agility.

Item budget uses an exponent in its calculation that favors having less of many stats than more of fewer.

Of the Bandit items only appear at level 58+ though. In the mean time, you get more bang for your buck with Monkey than Agility.

I'd go with this.

Basically as a rogue you're already dealing a lot of damage to mobs pretty quickly. The kicker comes from being able to survive damage long enough to out-dps your enemies/mobs. This means you'll want a decent amount of stamina, monkey will give you that.

here's the thing about monkey vs. agi gear: when a random green has only one stat, it gets penalized and doesn't have as many points.

say you have these two options for legs:

blah of the monkey +10 stam, +10 agi
blah of agility +15 agi

and these for chest:

blech of the monkey +12 stam, +13 agi
blech of stamina +18 stam

so if you go with the monkey gears, you get +22 stam and +23 agi, but
if you go with the agi/stam gears, you only get +15 agi and +18 stam.

here's the wowhead page for the aquamarine signet that shows what i'm talking about. alla's item page doesn't show the random stat breakdown
