This is not another "Which is better poast," in fact, it is a post to answer which is better so that there may be less "Which is better" posts...if that makes sense.

Frost vs Fire

The question that is asked probably 100 times a day, and answered 100 times a day in 50 different posts. Here you will find just essential information that can be accessed quickly as to hopefull cut down the number of posts made on this topic. All of this information can be found in the post here also that a lot of people seem to skip over before posting.

Which is better depends (for the most part) on what you plan on doing. Below is the situation you plan on getting into, and the possible builds that will help you achieve that plan.

Raiding:

Fire, fire, ummmm MORE FIRE!!

Fire hands down will out DPS frost, arcane or any combo of the 2. 2/48/11 has become the new cookie cutter build with Icy Veins adding a nice DPS boost.

2 Arcane
Arcane Subtlety - 2/2

48 Fire - New 2/48/3 Build or "Raid Spec Xtreme."
Improved Fireball - 5/5
Ignite - 5/5
Flame Throwing - 2/2
Improved Fireblast - 2/3
Incineration - 2/2
Pyroblast 1/1
Burning Soul - 2/2
Improved Scorch - 3/3
Master of Elements - 3/3
Playing with Fire - 3/3
Critical Mass - 3/3
Blast Wave 1/1
Fire Power - 5/5
Pyromaniac - 3/3
Combustion - 1/1
Molten Fury - 2/2
Empowered Fireball - 5/5

11 Frost
5/5 Improved Frostbolt
3/3 Elemental Precision
2/2 Improved Nova
1/1 Icy Veins
PvP

Frost would be the spec of choice for PvP, as with all the control, nova, shatter crits, BOOM that makes the players cry, its the way to go. 17/0/44 for PvP.

44 Frost - PvP Frost or "Baby Jesus is my name."

5/5 Improved Frostbolt
2/3 Elemental Precision
5/5 Ice Shards
3/3 Frostbite
2/2 Improved Frost Nova
3/3 Permafrost
3/3 Piercing Ice
1/1 Icy Veins
2/2 Arctic Reach
5/5 Shatter
1/1 Cold Snap
3/3 Improved Cone of Cold
2/2 Ice Floes
1/1 Ice Barrier
5/5 Arctic Winds
1/1 Summon Water Elemental
17 Arcane
Arcane Subtlety - 2/2
Arcane Focus - 4/5
Magic Absorbtion - 5/5
Arcane Impact - 3/3
Arcane Fortitude - 1/1
Improved Counterspell - 2/2

No PvP? No Raid?

Then play what makes you happy! All builds are viable for normal 5-mans, Daily PvE grinding, or questing.

What should I make for my mage???

Duh, the spellfire set if you are raiding, because it will last you well through the T5 content in the big kid raids.

The FSW (Frozen Shadowweave set) is not really much to talk about for mages. Nice frost damage, but thats about it.

Spell Hit?

YES!! 164 for fire to cap with Elemental Precision, 126 for frost to cap with EP, and 74 with Arcane Focus (for arcane mages).

More to come when I get time.

Note: Builds taken from The greatest mage post ever, by Filterspawn

edit : Read before posting noob. I really should have read the build before I copied and pasted. I have fixed the build for fire raiding to match what I currently use. Didn't realize there was no BW or PB. Also fixed the hit cap thing. Forgot about the extra bonus for frost.

As comment: wierd fire spec, no pyro blast and blast wave.
Pyro for "winding up" to soon to be tanked CC'd mobs or mobs / bosses use shields or any other skill or phase change that make them temporarily undamageable (spell reflection shields) or drop aggro.
Or when my combustion is sitting on 6 charges i fire off a pyro.

And ofcourse blastwaves for AOE.

You took imp fireblast instead, which isnt usefull at all for raiding, since a fireball takes 6 seconds to cast and the fireblast CD with talents is still 6.5 sec. Aside from it being a mana hog and not really fitting in spell rotation in the first place.
Id think the majority of mages would rather have pyro and blastwave then a shorter fireblast CD.

Winters chill for your PVP build. 5/5 IMO. Makes dispelling a pain in the ***, and in long games gives you 10% more crit on that target.

Cast rank 1 frostbolts before you sheep targets against teams who can dispell your sheeps. You get the frostbolt snare debuff, and winters chill starts stacking up. This makes your sheeps alot harder to dispell.

Imagine you play with a warlock, you're pounding away on someone, you get 5 winters chills stacked up, maybe frostbolt snare, then a target switch is called. Warlock fears the target who has some dots on it, cleansing/dispelling this fear will be almost impossible now.

for any mage, it's extremely helpful to build multiple sets of gear for +hit and +crit, and more recently, haste.

when you aren't fighting the boss himself, your +hit cap is a measly few % easily taken care of by elemental precision. against trash, 5mans, heroics and just farming in general, a good +crit set will serve you much better than wasted +hit. it might be a pain to carry multiple armor sets around with you, but that's what druids have been doing for years and for good reason.

in other news, i'm curious why the icy veins build is never paired with concentration? you can get both

my question is why shouldn't you? is there a big reason that i'm missing?
