Well I hit 40 over of the weekend and now I can wear mail armor. So how important is it at such a low level? For instance, lets say I currently have a nice leather chest with +15 agility, 6 stamina, 113 armor.

Now I'm out questing and get a chest piece with say, 13 agility, 9 spirit, 245 armor. I just made these numbers up. What do you do? Doesn't your pet get some additional armor based off of your armor?

Looking on the AH, I see TONS of mail gear with agility/strength or agility/spirit. Anything with agility/stamina or even agility/intelect is up for 40-60G for level 40-44 greens which is just freaking insane.

I know it isn't vital at this point of the game, but I do like having decent gear all the way up to 70. What did you older hunters do once you hit the 40 mark? Thanks all.

I wouldn't worry too much about switching all of your gear over to mail as soon as you hit 40. Just replace it as you go along depending on stats. I found that the Tough Scorpid "set" worked rather well for me in my 40's and early 50's. Although it isn't a true set it has great agility. I just picked up some +STA pieces in my other slots. The "set" pieces range in level from 39-45...so it will take you 5 levels to complete.

Here is the chestpiece.

I actually liked the fact that it wasn't a true set so that I didn't regret switching out pieces when I ran across better stuff. Don't get hung up on stacking STA at your level. Worry about that when you start getting Outland gear.

Its completely obvious why greens of the monkey are so expensive at level 40-44. High demand. Every hunter (and even some shamans) really want anything of the monkey. If people will pay it (and they do, trust me) then the market dictates a higher price. Either A.) continue to wear leather for a while or B.) suck it up and pay what they're charging. Amount of armor doesn't matter much imo.

Let's see here. A hunter's gear is more about stats than armor. If you were a warrior then it would be different. You aren't a warrior though. It doesn't really matter whether it is leather or mail. Take whatever has better stats.

One reason that hunters are able to wear mail is becasue it cuts down the arguments that rogues have with us over who's gear it is. Since we both use leather gear. it's really whether or not it has better stats. Having mail armor just widens our range for good gear.

cool, that is what I was hoping people say.

So does your pet get any additional armor from your armor? I guess I could check that out myself when I get home from work.

and on a side note, god I hope some of the monkey mail drops for me, think I'll just sell it.

According to Wowwiki:

Quote:
Pet scaling
Pets receive attribute bonuses depending on their master's stats:

1 RAP gives the pet 0.22 AP and 0.1287 spell damage
1 stamina gives 0.3 stamina
1 resistance gives 0.4 resistance
1 armor gives 0.35 armor

So switching your gear over to mail would certainly improve the armor of your pet.

That's true, but I would rather have better stats myself then my pet have better stats.

Agreed. I am not arguing that he should switch to mail armor. I was just answering the question.

Yeah. I knew what you meant. I was just saying that so that the OP knew that the hunter itself's stats are more important than the pet's.

Take the better upgrade. Don't say. It's leather I won't take that crap.

My hunter was wearing a nice leather shoulder for 5 months because it was a better upgrade to my zangermarsh quest reward and I couldn't get my bloody Beastlord shoulder to drop I had been looking for.

I just recently farmed enough honor to get the S1 shoulders.
