I've started a Pally Tank to duo with a Priest (healer). This is to play with gf (priest), and 2 other newcomer RL friends to WoW as DPS.

I already have a lvl 70 sponsoring in terms of gold.

I hope I made the right choice going for Pally as Tank. Friends told me Druid or War would have been better at lower levels. (Coz the Pally got problem holding aggro.. true?)

My aim was ultimately for lvl 70 instances which I know Pallies do very well.

Now the problem is professions. I started Blacksmithing coz I thought I can make stuff to use while I level up. But it seems to me, stuff I can make, are too low! Drops were better. It was so disappointing. Should I continue? (Or swtich to something more fun, like Engineering?)

Paladins don't start out as great tanks, or great healers for that matter. It takes a little while before we get the tools to do those jobs particularly well. That's not to say that you can't, but I'm sure from a tanking point of view a Warrior would have the easiest time low levels, then Druid, then Paladin.

Being with people you know though will help out a lot. You'll be able to quickly learn (I hope) what will work best for your particular situation and preform very well. As you level and get things like Consecration, Righteous Defense, Holy Shield, it will get easier and you'll be able to do some pretty "broken" things.

With Blacksmithing, if you can keep it skilled up as close to max as possible, you should be able to make some very nice items as you level. It really falls short at level 70 though because of the lack of tanking items. Engineering is a good pick cause it has a lot of fun stuff, the copter mounts, and the awesome tanking goggles at 70 (soon to be upgraded). Also might consider enchanting: I wish I had enchanting cause I can solo lots of instances and could then DE all the drops and make some nice cash =/

YES!!
You picked the right choice in a Pally tank. In all honesty most 10+ instance love a MT and an OT. Most off tanks in 10+ instance are pallys.
Want to put your fears to rest? Here is a great thread to read.

Nothing more be said there.

Blacksmithing? I keep hearing that in high end there are some great pieces for tanks. I'm not seeing it and most t4 gear will beat it (well get to the one pain in the butt that I've experienced in a min).
I'm going to go Alchemy. I've got my mining so high that it's too much money to let go of and I need some of the mats it provides. BUT the pots avil in Alch are something that I'm always spending money on. So, at this high lvl I'm going to ditch Blacksmithing and go Alch, buying the Herbs (which you could go with for mats and money) to get my alch up (using my mining to pay for it).
Blacksmithing provides Bracers of the Green Fortress which is a highly recomended piece for prep for Heroics/Kara. It's in the Defense and Mitigation sticky as part of the advised gear and referd to in many "How's my gear" check threads. It's also a Blacksmithing Plan. Now the Primal Nether that is currently BOP will change to not being so when 2.4 comes out so you may not meet the problem that I have, but it is also a rare Plan and hard to find a BS who can make it (hence my pain in the butt that I've experience that I talked about before hand).

In the end it's really up to you, but if your still low lvl I would go with Herb/Alch.

Good Luck, Drink Up.
The rum is flowing.

Most of the good smithing stuff can be made by someone else though as they are BoE. Really only keep smithing if you want the DPS chest(s) for Ret or one of the weapon specs, again for Ret.

I've speant a couple thousand of gold leveling my BS up to 375, and crafting things for myself, my most notable things I've crafted for end-level.

1. Thunder.
2. Boots of the Protector

Now when the next patch comes out I should be able to get my Thunder to Stormherald, which will be awesome (since nethers and vortexes wont be BoP anymore). I imagine if I raided I would get a couple more recipes that would help me out, but that's pretty much it.
