I'm just wondering why do rogues have pickpocket? I know there's some SI quests for it but when do you ever use it? Did blizzard just say "rogues need another ability" and toss it in? Or does it have a feasible and practical purpose that i'm missing.

Well, apart from all the untapped money from junkboxes, random grays and solid coin, not really I'm afraid. It's there, in my opinion, strictly because rogue is similar to thief, and thief's steal. Granted, it is a decent money-maker.

You'll use it the moment you want to level up your lockpicking skill. Can't beat junkboxes for that, especially towards the end. It's great that they added all those training chests everywhere, but there are definitely some problems with those. I was in my 40's still when I was sent to Tyr's Hand to improve my skill on the boxes there...

Put my picking on hold then until I hit 60, only to find out that there is still no feasible access to those chests without help since you have at least 2 56-57 elites standing right on top of almost each one of them.

So... rather than messing with those chests I just kept making circles at Tyr's Hand, pickpocketing every one of those damn elites until I had enough junkboxes to get to 300 lockpicking skill.

Pickpocket is in there for the rogue lockboxes.
Rogue lockboxes are in there for 1) lockpicking skill practice and 2) free poison mats.

Poison mats, and used to be blinding powder (now replaced by dirt). I guess they added Spinesever for a little flavor after phasing out reagent for Blind.

There are various ways to get you into pickpocketing, there are some macros around that you can use that will automatically pickpocket mobs before you use your opener from stealth. I found these to be really unreliable since they had a habit of only pickpocketing one item and not everything in the loot window.

Best thing you can do is to make sure you have auto loot turned on. This way when you click pickpocket it will automatically take everything from the loot window, saving you the hassle of trying to follow a mob around and loot from the loot window at the same time.

You should pickpocket as much as possible, you get a lot of vendor trash, loose coins and regents (including flash powder). The second reason towards the lockboxes is obviously leveling your lockpicking. At lvl70 this is really useful to have maxed. There are instances you can get into without having to do lengthy quest chains for keys, and certain parts of instances that can be skipped entirely by lockpicking a certain door. For example the doors in BRD and avoiding the sewer run in Shattered Halls.

Having auto-loot on will make it so effortless you won't think twice about pickpocketing. You can always turn it off for instances to avoid taking items by mistake, although you can't auto-loot BoP items so there isn't much need since you can just trade if you take something BoE mistake.

Edit: Now that I think about it you can also pick the Scarlet Monastery doors. There is a sticky on lockpicking on the front page for more info.

As the guy above me stated, you can simply macro your openers to pickpocket (while having auto loot on). This makes pick pocketing effortless. Worst case, all PP does is slightly increase the mob value of things that have pockets. You get a lot of useless junk, poison mats, coin, and poison mats. One of the biggest reasons to pickpocket before the last patch was to get blinding powder.

I rolled Herbalism/Alchemy so I could pick my own Swifthistle & Fadeleaf.

Thistle tea gets nerfed, blinding powder drops off lockboxes, I get angry. On the plus side though, making these makes fighting S3 warlocks in my scrub-*** gear stupidly easy!

Hehe, been a while since you had to blind somebody, eh? Since 2.3, Blind no longer uses any reagents at all and I think it has been completely removed from the game. At least I don't remember seeing any in all the boxes I had to pick to get from 250-300...

Glad to see I'm not the only one having difficulties keeping up with game changes at times :)

Alot of the outland mobs also have Super Health Potions and Super Mana Potions. Being an engineer I make them into Health/Mana Potion Injectors and make some decent coin since I use the pvp health pots.

Pickpocketing is easy money. Distract the mob, pickpocket them, your energy is back to 100 by then, go to your opener. I just leave the auto-loot option on to speed things up.

To level from 250-300, BRD is your best friend. Solo, you can pick the first 2 doors on the left, exit & reset the instance, rinse, repeat. It eventually tells you that "you have entered too many instances" and won't allow you back in for a bit (not sure how long, I always came back a day later). Within a few days, you'll be at 300. If you are actually running BRD with a group, all those cell doors can be picked as well.

QFT. I have at least 2 stacks on health pots on my toon at all times simply because I pickpocket as much as I can. I get so many pots that I am able to keep my quest partner stocked up as well. Great ability.
