Just started today, and the results so far have been... bad, to say the least. However, for the most part I'm willing to dismiss that as a result of my inexperience.

However, there are a few problems which have cropped up that are making things much more difficult than I feel they need to be. I was wondering if anyone more experienced with the tactic knew of ways around them.

1) Sometimes when I go to cast Blizzard, the AoE template won't appear. If I click, it winds up casting directly on top of me, or right behind me. Changing the camera angle seems to be the only thing that fixes this, and I'd really rather not waste those precious Blizzard ticks setting it up.

2) It's easy to get disoriented with the camera spinning every which way, and wind up blinking into a mob I'd made a note to avoid beforehand, or losing track of one of the enemies. Can the camera angle be locked, made overhead, bother, or anything else to make this more manageable? Or, are different kinds of moving (mouse vs. keyboard, for example) better suited for pulling?

3) Somewhat going with the above, it's often very easy to lose track of the mobs I just froze and blinked away from, and wind up wasting a few seconds trying to find them.

4) Probably not much to do beyond moving in tighter circles, but mobs have this nasty habit of reaching their tether limit. Is this less noticeable in some areas than others?

Hey mate,

Firstly, what level are you? And where are you grinding?

I started AoEing around 34 I think; found the first 1-2hrs so hard. By 67, I reckon I could almost do it in my sleep....almost

Never had any problems with my template, tho. Easily the most important thing to do is clear out pats/casters/ranged mobs.

Camera problems may be related to where you are grinding.... I had some small problems with trees/structures at times.

Yeah, what beebsman said about trees and such is very helpful.

I find that a lot of times (no matter what level) trees and rocks and such, mess up my camera, often causing it to zoom.

Losing track of enemies can be solved by zooming out a bit in order to have a wider view, so you arent focused on a little circle that might or might not have the enemies your looking for in it.

Also, about

I started AoE-in way back when (abount patch 1.8) at about level 28ish, so I know how you feel.

1. You're probably in a forest, Stonetalon or Duskwood, and your targeting reticle is hitting the tress foliage above your head. It's infuriating, and there's no good solution other than to move (and mess up your timing).

2. If the mob in in blink range, and it's not a caster/stuns/intercept (felboars in shadowmoon are sooo annoying), then it should be involved in your pull. Before the damage cap nerf, I was pulling 25+ pirates in Tanaris. Blinking is also not actually necessary if you had a good set-up, just run to distance.

3. always take a few steps, then blink. Remember they're directly behind you.

4. Tether is mostly based on level and the particular mobs. Sometimes you get a huge pull (pirates in tanaris, the vultures in hellfire peninsula), sometimes they give you smaller pulls, 4-7 bobs in two or three nearby groups.

Two pieces of advice; until you get it down, try just pulling a few (3-5). Once you think you've got it, try pulling a bunch 8+ then use Ice Block right in the middle of their normal grouping, this will help prevent resets and get them all in one spot. Cancel your IB, FN, run and blink. The second recommendation is get minor run speed on your boots. It helps a lot in the pull, and helps you get away when you mess it up ;)

A) more levels

/flex and some day be as good as me

alrigth so I have the same problems ...try flater surfaces with less trees

Hijacking this thread with a related question. My mage is currently lvl 33, specced so far mostly frost. What is the actual process to AoE when solo grinding? Or can it be done at this level?

I tried it once several levels back on a group of lower level mobs, attempting to get several to chase me, then using frost nova to lock them in place long enough to cast blizzard - at least that was the theory. In practice it all came apart at the seams - Frost nova did not freeze them all, and then it promptly broke once damage started happening to those caught.

I rolled a LOW level forstie, currently 25. As soon as I hit 20 I started practicing. I would die once every three or four pulls, but learning is tough sometimes. As soon as I hit 22-23 I moved up to barrens and hillsbrad. At 25 I can pull 6 - 7 farmers in hillsbrad and taken them out efficiently. All I can say is practice, practice, and learn to run when freeze is resisted.

Also check out this video, it helped me with the mechanics of pulling.

This is true. For example - If you tried to AOE in the Stockades - if you round mobs in one of the side rooms, go outside the room, and hit Bliz – often it will target the wall that is now in front of you (And between you and the mobs.)

There are 2 ways I have addressed this. 1 – Better planning. Plan on round up your mobs in a location that has better sight lines. 2 – (Unless you have changed the default buttons) Left Clicking AND HOLDING will allow you to adjust the screen/camera. Doing that often allows you to look into the room you want or around the rock that you are being blocked by…

I’m sure that is true – there is some way to lock or better control the cameras. Honestly – Just practice and you’ll get it.

Don’t use Ice Armor that will freeze mobs that hit you. This causes long strings of mobs that are hard to round up and ‘collect’ for Bliz. Google the movie “In Frost we Trust” and watch that guy. (He uses ice armor, but most people I think avoid it for the reason I mentioned. Try both…)

Don’t run too far from mobs – use lvl 1 Arcane blast to keep them agro’d. If you are using a mount – at 40 you can collect more mobs than you could without a mount. At 60 you can collect even more.
