raid and 5-man spell rotationFollow

#1 Mar 19 2008 at 5:59 PM Rating: Decent
i am a level 70 shadow priest, and a "rookie" raider; kara and gruul... i run 5 mans and heroics quite often, and read a few different message boards... i've seen it touched on in various places, but never in full... my question is what is everyone's "usual" spell rotations in a 5-man or in a raid setting? for both trash mobs and bosses?

VE and/or VT? Is SW:D wasted mana on trash mobs, when compared to VT and MB/MF?

i've played around some, but just am not experienced enough to quantify some of subtleties in rotation. looking to cast in such a way as to be mana efficient while still maximizing damage.

thanks!

Maximizing dps = not being mana efficient. There is no way around that unfortunately. Our mana efficiency, especially before hitting 1200 shadow dmg, is called chain chugging mana pots! :D

In terms of spell rotation, there isn't one. It's a priority system instead, since we have such weird cooldowns on our spells.

1. Is VT up? If no, cast VT
2. Is SW:P up? If no, cast SW:P
3. Is Mind Blast on cooldown? If no, cast Mind Blast
4. Is SW:D on cooldown? If no, cast SW:D
5. If everything else is on cooldown, cast Mind Flay

That is for boss fights. Of course, add VE when it won't threat cap you, remove SW:D if there is too much AOE dmg, that sort of thing.

On trash, if it lives less than 15 seconds, just MB and Flay. If it lasts longer than 15 seconds I generally use both dots.

Trash that dies faster than a a full duration of SWP, I usually VT->Blast->Death->Flay->Flay, maybe one more blast at the end, and then start up just barely before it's dead on the next mob (provided it's being tanked and not CC'd). I also clip Flay, starting Blast/Death just after the 2nd tick hits, if those other spells become available. Makes me look not quite so pathetic on trash :p

Perfect advice was given if you only heed it. You will not need VE for most fights as your main healer should be more than capable so save the mana. VT is a mana waste in Non Boss Fights.

Normal rotation is roughly the same as when you are soloing. Some like to cast SW:D early for the damage spike, but I do not as I prefer to save it to steal a trash mob kill to proc Spirit Tap. With that being said, it is Mind Blast, SW:P, Flay, Flay, Mind Blast and so on and so on.

For Boss Fights, I start with a Mind Blast, SW:P, VE, VT and start the above cycle with the thought process of what Khalane said. If a DoT is not up, get it going, if it is up, then go to the next. VE & VT is huge for you if you have a Paladin as your tank by the way, they get mana from all heals, as well as the mana from VT, which means they can continue for that much longer and use all sorts of abilities throughout the fight as their mana is constantly returned. So if a Pally or two are in your 5 man, I would say that VE becomes more viable for you to use, and VT for the higher HP mobs.
