So my noob self is slowly leveling my feral druid, he just dinged 67. I've been enjoying the scenery in Outland and not really paying attention to gear. During downtime today I looked at possible upgrades and found that I am apparently a fool for still wearing Jerkin of the Untamed Spirit. Since I'm honored w CE I should pick up Warden's Hauberk and I presume gemming it up will make up for the difference in armor.

So....What's up with the gems? By this I mean -- should I be gemming pieces in my late 60s? Should I have been doing it before? Or is this something to only worry about for end game? And if I should be gemming....anyone have any recommendations for how to gem that Hauberk up?

I'd just use green gems. You can usually buy em for 1-3g depending on gem and server economy. At your level, I'd gem for the bonuses, meaning put the right color into the right socket. Just remember, agi > str, and you need all the melee stats.

Thanks, I followed your advice and got three shifting shadow draenites (I think thats what they were) for cheap. One last question -- my health went up 400 and my crit by 1%, but my armor dropped by almost 1,000 (from 10k to 9k in my bear clothes). Is that a good tradeoff or should I keep the higher armor for tanking?

Hmmm...I'd take 1k armor over 400 health any day. I'd go with the old stuff.

Done. This is why I was somewhat mystified by all the comments that the Warden's Hauberk was da bomb in pre-70 tanking outfits. I imagine if you use blue gems it becomes that but that old Jerkin still seems to get the job done.

Thanks for the advice.

Your armor rating in Bear form, at level 67, is ~10k?

Uhm, can you link to your Armory profile? I'd like to see what you're wearing other than the Jerkin.

I've got the tanking cloak from second boss in Slave Pens (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=24379;source=live) sitting in my bank. As I said, not exactly been paying attention to gear since I dinged 60. Any suggestions on upgrades always appreciated.

Personally I think one should always have their gear gem'd. If your not planning to hold on to a piece very long, go ahead and toss a green gem in. Like skribs said, they are pretty cheap and for the most part are usually only 1-2 points less of each stat then their blue overlords. If you have something your going to keep for a bit, farm some gold and toss a blue in the socket. Which will, be easier once you hit level 70 and get rolling on some dailies.

The trick is.. gem for what you need or what your weak on.
Are you a DPS'er? Tanking, are you uncritable? Is your hit not what you want it to be? Does your dodge need to be higher?

Kaliban's Class Loot List: Druid has a gem listing. It's great because it breaks it down by color, quality, then by role. (Caster, Melee/Tank, and Healing)

I've seen people suggest the warden's hauberk for dps sets but not for tanking sets, it just doesn't seem to compare to some of the quest rewards you can get in outlands in terms of sought after bear stats. Drop some AP gems in it you'll still get the socket bonus and use the jerkin for your tanking set until you get something better, i honestly don't remember what i replaced mine with >.> <.<

I wouldn't worry about gear at lvl 67. Anything decent will do fine. Because once you hit 70, you will have to replace everything you got anyway.

Warden's Hauberk is definitely a dps piece for druids. The Jerkin is a much better tanking chest armor. I wore mine until I replaced it with the Heavy Clefthoof. There's also a world drop blue at level 67 or 68 that's nice for tanking, but not really worth the cash to buy when clefthoof is the gold standard for new 70s and easy to obtain.

Thanks, I figured I'd worry more about gear when I dinged 70, maybe a little more when I hit 68-69 and can do some serious BGs and pvp. (Parenthetical question: Is that too early to bother w Halaa?)

Is there a good list of what a tank should have upon dinging 70? I've looked at Emmerald's list, which is amazing but hard to figure out which ones I should have in hand right away (from pre-70 quests or instances or easy 70 chains) and which I will need to run heroics/rep grind/farm for. I'm looking for Braxxis' Staff of Slumber on AH but havent gotten it yet. And I still want to pick up the belt and ring from end boss in Ramps (Ursol's Claw has dropped twice for me, ironically, but neither of those have).

Edit: Special thanks for the link to Kaliban's gem page. Very useful for a noob like myself.

Best tanking chest piece Lvl 62 item .. and very easy to get before you upgrade to Heavy clefthoof
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?wquest=10139
REWARD: http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=28051
425 ARMOR 26Str 25Agi 22 Sta
add a +6 all stats to that .. you'll be set for a bear tanking chest piece till 70 !!
at 67ish .. i'd start quest to get the animalist belt - green item , but the armor is unsurpassed - took me maybe 30 mins to finish chain
Verdant gloves (spelling ?)
staff : http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=31186;source=live
550 armor on a staff .. depending on AH pricing usually 30-40 g

im quite Noobish to WoW myself .. and ive pestered the Local Druid in guild till everytime i send him a tell i can just hear him groan and say .. not again hehee

just some items off top of my head
remember on clefthoofs to add dodge gems - since we cant parry and agility = armor = Ap
Sta. if you have the room .. just my 2cp's worth of info .. hope it helps

Never add dodge gems or crit gems as druid. Since we get same return per agility point as you'd get from 1dodge rating and 1 crit rating not too mention armor and also AP in cat form. Basically, agility stamina armor in no particular order.

As a rule for my tanking gear, I use stam gems until I hit 20k health then switch to Agi gems after that. I haven't yet found a socket bonus in my tanking gear worth using a yellow gem for.

For my cat gear, it is 8 Agi all the way. If necessary I can use a yellow gem with Agi, Str, Crit or Hit and still be ok. I don't like to use the Purple gems (for blue sockets) with Sta on them though as I would rather go full DPS stats and get my Sta from my gear.

Check out Emerald's site at http://www.emmerald.net/ it is pretty comprehensive and will help you map out where you want to be at 70.

I found this to be a great guide. The guy runs a Feral Tank blog, and here is a great list of Feral Tank gear for pre-raid 70's. It's got nothing for Cat form, but provides a good starter, and then tracks some quality badge and Kara upgrades so you know what to spend your badges on.
