So i just made a priest and she is at level 10 right now. I know i want to do something with shadow because it is the best for leveling as im told. But my real question is where to start with my talent points? If anyone could explain to me where to start out and what not that would be great.

If you read the shadowpriest FAQ at the top of the page, you will actually find a suggested talent progression to follow.

A lot of the questions you have, and will have as you progress, are answered in that FAQ. Some good people spent a lot of time to create it.

Spirit tap is you next 5 levels period... after that it is up to you. I would always recommend that your next 2 points are in SW:P to make it last that bit longer for extra dps with no mana increase.

If you are solo'ing a lot, then 3 points in Shadow Focus to resist any potential mob resists... after that you get Mind Flay, improve your Mind Blast cast time, and then most of the remaining talents will go towards improving damage and so forth, but it it your choice of what you want.

Some people will suggest putting points in wand spec in the disc tree from lvls 15-19. It's a valid point because it will increase your DPS noticably. I went straight shadow though, because at 40 you're definitely going to want shadowform. If the few gold to respec at 40 is no big deal to you, then take wand spec. WiskeyDuck is right though, first five points go to Spirit Tap regardless of the spec you choose to level in.

If you don't mind respeccing I'd get wand spec from the disc tree and then go down the shadow tree starting with spirit tap. Spirit tap is great for returning mana after a fight but wand spec is even better because at the low lvls you can output more dmg for zero mana with a good wand and wand spec. The higher you get the less you'll use your wand and spirit tap is more useful.

After 40 respec full shadow to get shadowform.
