52 Lock wuth a Talent question.. Sounds like a new SubjectFollow

Well i cant decide.. i love the play style of Destro and all the big numbers... but hate the mana consumption to work destro. but on the other hand i love the survivablity/grinding abilities of Affliction but dont really like the play style.. my lock is at 52 atm these are both the specs i play..

Destro...

And Affliction..

My question is should i just wait till 64 once i get incinerate i think it is.. then spec destro and just hope for Shadow preists or mages in groups or should i go affliction all the way to 70 and go from there?

If all you're doing is grouping then stay Destro... By 40 it already pulls ahead as the best 5man+ option for pure damage output.

Theres a number of problems with riding Destruction all the way up, though.

For Destro to work well in 5-Mans you need a decent mana pool (geared similarily to fire mage) so that you're pool will last until the group takes a break and you get a chance to drink. This means when you get into leveling up out of the group, you find yourself with one of the weakest grinding setups in the game with very few OShi buttons (changes a bit with Shadowfury), highly dependant on breaks, low HP, and bagspace filled with Food and Water (not to mention the cost to keep these stocked.)

You also run into some other real problems. While at say 65 a deep-Destro can outperform deep Affliction in a 5-man, when the time comes for real 70 content a Destro needs huge +SpellHit and good Crit% before he'll come anywhere close to the damage and utility found in either Affliction or Demonology. This means while your trying to get gear you're falling behind Tanks in the damage department and becoming dead-weight to groups. Ontop of this problem you'll still be plagued with the original Destruction problems.

I suggest you go affliction now and ride it out until you get into Kara gear (at least.) Unless your PVPing, then when you hit 70 you got a few more choices.

On the bright side you may not be looking at all your options here. At 50 Demonology gets the Felguard (very different playstyle from other Demons.) Affliction has IHoT/DarkPact by now, allowing for you to do some serious Fear-Juggling, or just straight Drain Hunt if you prefer that. Destruction is notoriously bad at grinding for a reason - it's very painful if you've actually tried your other options.

I'd have to recommend Affliction. The playstyle is more complex, sure, but it's way more rewarding for farming/questing. If you plan to level up PURELY through dungeons you might go Destruction, but getting used to the playstyle you'll be using through 1/2 of the endgame while levelling is a fine idea.

Locks dont need manapools and they never have. Warlocks need Health and Spelldmg, that's all. If you have a halfway competent healer you can Lifetap as much as you like, even at low levels it should be easy to refill without dying.

If you like Destro, stick with it. Always play what you like, unless your raiding, then you gotta do what guild wants sometimes.

The only thing I'd say, is yeah, ignore the advice about stacking +Int. Stack more and more +Sta, same as any lock, and Life Tap. May also want to consider picking up the talent Soul Leech instead of Backlash. Get health back for damage, which you canthen turn into mana may lessen time spent drinking.

I have a lvl 46 belf lock that is currently spec'd 100% Destruction. I love her. It all depends on if you can accept the weaknesses that come with each build. I know my mana is always an issue if I am not prepared, I realize some of my better hits don't mean anything in a BG because they take too long to throw, and I need to stay away from the melee attacks on me as much as possible cause I am squishy. But I love the power I do have and with a lil work, I play my lock to the best she can be and most times she does just fine out there in the big world. Go with what ya like. So far destruction is the life for me. :-)

I personally like demo... built right and you can dish out the dmg. and you get a little more dmg from fel gaurd in end game with trash mobs. Affliction isnt all that great with trash mobs, but when it comes to bosses they just rotate their Dots and shadow bolts to really get a jump on their DPS, Destro i never have played myself... not my style... if i want big bangs... imo id go mage... but thats me :P
Also if you get a warlock thats good enough with afflic and/or demo they can use their curses effectivly in raids to help control trash mobs... warlocks havea very minor CC in a sense. But yea i always think of the warlock in the back of the groupo trying to hide from all the mobs.

I would not ignore Int if you are going Destro...

For his level hes NOT going to be liked by the healer for needing to be healed over and over again. At that level bracket the trick with Destro is to end the battle with equal% HP/MP and sit and eat/drink when the healer does.

Even at 70 on 10-mans where you're obviously going to need to Lifetap you're looking at getting decent Crit% and if you're that into PVE you shouldn't be worrying about getting your base HP over like 8k-9k.

Good destro Locks gear like Fire mages: SpellHit (until 202) => SpellCrit => Haste => SpellDamage => Int => Spi/Sta.

I leveled Destro.

I would have to say, spend like a 2 hour game play period, on stuff where you get experience, but is green in level to you.

Take the time to learn how to maximize your mana/health returns, send in your pet, cast corruption, lifetap, drain life, cast immolate and coa, lifetap, drain life, etc.

You can easily end every fight full hps/mana.

Learn when to send your fg to the next target (omen addon can help you watch threat gen)

Generally leveling destro, I was more than able to rival an Afflic locks abilities in mass mob pulls, However I did find about every 5-8th mob I had to stop to drink.

Playing Destro to level, is fun, and if you have the patience for your pet to gain aggro before you start the big numbers (in other words your spell rotations) you can easily gain a better leveling ability, and still get the big crits when needed (the pesky group quests, that take 3-5, you can easily solo -5-8 levels, as long as you understand aggro)

Now personally I would take Affliction, as you can get some of destro in the end anyway. Thats what i'm doing. =)

BUT

Your affliction build should be a little more like This.
Obviously different people will have different opinions about specifics, but thats your skeleton.
Shadow Embrace is used solely for the affliction effect it generates. Also Empowered Corruption needs to be gotten when you have enough spell power to make it count. HoT is one of your two instant cast Oshi buttons, along with deathcoil.

If you do end up picking affliction, just read some of the older posts on the subject, they are gold.
