Am I doing enough dps ?Follow

#1 Mar 17 2008 at 7:52 PM Rating: Decent
Already posted on wow forums, but want as much feedback as possible..

Allright, 70 hunter here. I have the BM 1:1 shot rotation macro, you can check my gear.

In any given heroic instance, mostly SP and Mech, I'll start off the run around 650 or so and slowly progress to about 700 or so at the end. I do some CC but not much.

I'm using BW when its up, I use my Trinkets, shot rotation, multishoot when i can.. etc etc.

I keep hearing awesome numbers from hunters and for whatever reasons, i find myself working really really hard to attain 700. Is that what I can expect until I get more ap/crit ?

I thought I should already have been higher...

any help is appreciated !

Btw, dps is counted via recount.

Here's my armory..

Are you looking for someone to tell you that you're doing amazing for your gear?

DPS isn't the end-all be-all of the game. As long as you're pulling your weight in a group and not being a tard, you're doing fine. Aside from not having ideal enchants on your chest, bracers, melee weapon and gloves, you're on the right track gear wise.

that's really all there is to say...

For your gear level it sounds like you're doing pretty well.

No, really not looking for a pat on the back, I actually want someone to tell me how I can improve. I keep reading 850dps in the forums for my gear. And even blowing all my cds and trinkets and being right in it, 725 or so is my highest so far through a whole heroic mech run. I just wanted to see how I could improve that amount.

I know my enchants arent ready yet... but I felt that gear wasnt worth it for now.

I pretty much wanna know if my dps vs gear is allright.

Ohh, and about the tard part... I can double and triple trap when needed, while holding my dps as well. I think im doing allright on the l2p side... even though we learn everyday ! lol

What ammo are you using? I added 10 DPS when I got adamite shells, and they are cheaper from guild engineer

WOOT 2 stars!

Yes you can, doesn't mean more isn't better.
You need to do less dps than the tank is doing tps.

Feign Death FTW! We are hunters, as long as the tank does some tps, aggro is not that big an issue.

1st DD rule: You shall not peel mobs off the tank.

Or as a rogue once told our overnuking-AE-happy-mage after the 5th rez at the 10th trash pull in a Kara Funraid: "Power is nothing without control" :-)

What I don't understand is how you are pulling such high numbers to start with. I run SWStats dps with pet included and I only sit around 550-maybe 600. Only ever can I hit 650 on a fully sundered mob with CDs going and that.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Rexxar&n=Septerra

Thats my armory, and I'm using a BM shot macro that I saw in the hunter Faq. Am I doing something wrong to see such low numbers? I'd like to think my gear is better, but obviously not so much by the sounds of it.. I'm not fully enchanted yet, as I've been kinda holding out for a Sonic Spear for Savagery, and I just got the boots lastnight so I haven't put agility on them yet either.

EDIT: I usually far, far outdamage everyone else in the run with me, so that is why I can't quite understand his numbers, or even 850 as was stated later in a different post.

A lot of the big dps numbers you hear are from raids not 5-mans.

When I'm fully loaded with raid buffs, elixirs etc, I'll do around 900dps on a boss. If there's a shaman in my group with heroism and +agi totem, it gets closer to 1K. I'm also using mysterious arrows.

It's very different when I'm doing heroics. I dont use elixirs or expensive ammo. I'll have anywhere from 55-650dps depending on the buffs and how much I'm paying attention to an ideal shot rotation. I'm usually not simply because the tank quality isnt as good in instance pugs vs guild raids.

Both the people asking about dps had really really low hit ratings. Hit rating (for any dps class, not just hunter... only exception MAYBE warrior) is the cause for the greatest reduction in dps currently in the game. Basically if you're not capped, you're really gimping your dps. Hunter is super easy too, we seem to have the lowest hit rating cap of any dps class I have come across. It's not just misses, its also glancing blows and other partial damage. Get your hit done as soon as you can, and then see where you stand.

The really high numbers are also often not from trash either. For instance I'll get over 1000 dps on a boss, but I'll often only get around 800-900 overall on trash in a kara run. This is due to the fact that I don't push as hard on trash, as well as missing elixir buffs etc.

Remember when capping your hit that 9% is hit cap, but if you can be in a group with a draenei that does physical damage the hit cap is actually 8%.

A few things:

Your gun is too fast for a BM hunter. Get a gun that is closer to the 2.8 mark or so. It will help your dps more than you think. Right now, with all of your talents and your ammo pouch and such, you're clipping your auto-shots. If you get a gun with a speed of 2.7 or 2.8, you'll be getting the full effect of the gun's damage.

You're too worried about stamina. I know you think your gear doesn't merit better enchants yet, but most of the attack power and agility enchants are very easy and relatively cheap. 26 attack power to gloves, for instance, only takes a little bit of arcane dust. Right now you have more health than I do, and I'm basically completely decked out in epics.

Don't worry about socket bonuses unless they're actually worth it. The one on your helm almost is, but if you think about it, you could use 3 +16 AP gems there, which would come out to 48 AP, whereas right now you have 32 AP between the gems and the bonus. MP5 is nice, but unnecessary unless you're raiding. Even then, some mana potions and/or a shadow priest will go a long way. Your belt is another place where you could easily lose the socket bonus. Like I said, you don't need so much stamina. If you're running heroics, my opinion is that another 500 health won't do anything for you. If you have a mob beating on you and feign is down, chances are good that you're dead anyway. And your leggings - why would you want a dodge rating socket bonus? Do 3 +16 AP gems in there. Or 3 +8 Agi gems - get yourself a little more crit.

Back to enchants - your disco axe is actually a pretty decent weapon. It will last you until you get one of the following: Legacy from Kara, the Sonic Spear from Slabs, or the rep weapon from Honor Hold (I'm horde, so I don't know what you guys call it)(I know there are other decent weapons out there, but those are the most common and probably the easiest to get - except I've never seen the Sonic Spear or Legacy drop, but that's besides the point). Put savagery on it.

Finally, level up your leatherworking. I used to not be a believer, but the Ebon Netherscale set is very good. It's a pain to make, but it has lasted me a long time.

BM hunters can do some crazy dps, and they are ridiculously easy to do dps with. I don't know what I would peg you at, but you should be a little higher. Your gear isn't bad, it just needs the tweaks I've mentioned.

Edit: To Altrizia - your gear is good, so I don't completely understand why you aren't doing more dps than you are - the two obvious things I see are with your spec. I'm not trying to tell everyone to go out and do the cookie-cutter BM build, but if you want to max your dps, move 5 points from endurance training to improved aspect of the hawk and 2 points from spirit bond to animal handler. This would require you to make some other changes, but it is worth it. Also, as I mentioned above, the disco axe is a good weapon. Don't hold out for the sonic spear because it has a nasty habit of never dropping. For me, anyway. But I think the rep weapon from Thrallmar/Honor Hold is better.

Edit: If you dont want to go straight AP gems, you could get hybrids with AP/hit. On trash, with a group that doesnt leave during the fight to take a shower, your dps doesnt mean a whole lot. On a boss fight, you need to drop that boss before everyone wipes :D Get your hit up, and you will:
1) Have talented better than most Kara geared hunters
2) Have gemmed and enchanted better than most Kara geared hunters

btw, the felstalker set is fine for entering kara. I would rather farm heroics for badges than farm the mats for the epic LWing chest, but that's my preference. Plus, by finishing that felstalker set, your hit will fly up, and you will be able to focus on replacing the rest of your gear (*points at your gun*).

Enjoy BM! tears **** up

I agree with mikey. Enchanted gear and blue gems really make a difference. If you really don't want to ehcant your gear becuase you are waiting for the "next" piece, head to a bg for a few days and get yourself a purple. Vindicator equipment is very good and very hard to replace til about T5 or so.

Some trinkets that are really easy to get and help out alot are:

Bladefist's Breadth (Group quest in Hellfire Pen.)

Hourglass of the Unraveller (Drop off a boss in Caverns of Time, BM)

Just having these right here will give you a very good increase in dps.

I will say that you aren't doing that bad for the gear you have tho.

I've done 900 DPS with Tyrana on the Warlord in SV. I had slightly worse gear than I do now (no epix, and no BM pieces). I did have a shammy haste buff, but I still think it was a good job.

Pat me!

Well, I ran BM the other night, nonheroic to finish off my kara key; the party setup was Warlock, Paladin (Ret....ugh :P) Druid tanking, Shaman healer, and me a BM hunter.
I had DPS up the whole time and I don't believe I even hit 600 the entire run. At the end of the day I was still over a mil dmg, but even using CDs when they were up, I didn't break 600. I wasn't clipping my autoshot, either.
#22 Mar 19 2008 at 3:36 PM Rating: Decent
would you give us your armory ?

i tested on the servants in blasted lands today.. and on a 2mins run i can get 1130dps with pet... no cooldowns used at all.. just using 3:2 macro
#23 Mar 19 2008 at 8:28 PM Rating: Decent
man all these numbers dazzle me. i havent checked my dps lately, but the highest ive come across when i last did was 600-650. that was in a 10 man kara run. soloing my dps was only 350 or so.

i try not to worry about my dps so much as i do aggro management.

Heh, i disproved the you can never be doing enough dps theory....
I had to stop steadies and just autoshot on Leo yesterday cause i had caught up with our locktank for the second time.... and FD was still on cooldown ><

Gogo 1200 and a bit BM dps!
(averaging at 1125 over Hydross, Lurker, leo and trash)

edit: my pet also overaggroed the tank cause i used BW ~5 seconds into the lurker fight and it didnt have salv... >.>

This is me. The amount of dps you can pump out really, REALLY depends on a lot of things. Between my pet and I, I've done as much as 1300 (probably more than that, actually, but I don't have any hard numbers for Curator or that boss in heroic Mech that does the polarity thing), and some fight just aren't meant for steady dps.
