today was my first time experiencing tanking kara. or at least parts of it. Earlier in the week I got a taste of heroic mech and SP and both were fairly easy to tank although 10.5k life does put u in a bind if a healer isn't constantly aware that u are gonna need heals.

Anyway, the raid leader decided that I should OT and that a warrior with 12k life unbuffed should tank (ok with me considering that he could be at like 15k or so life when buffed)

ANYWAY, i tanked midnight and moroes with no problem.. initially they wanted me to off tank moroes to grab aggro off of the MT sap/gauge but, i decided against that since it would be quite a task to gain second aggro on him blah blah

anyway, upgraded my gear a little bit, realizing that I have very high defense but stam still suffering and avoidance just not there yet. I'm three badges away from the libram so that's cool, but, I'm seriously considering resocketing most of my gem slots to stack stam. I worry taht I'm going to lose a bunch of avoidance tho (many of the bonuses are dodge bonuses or red parry gems).

Any advice as to how I should proceed with this? Yeah i know, i've heard it from u guys a ton of times before: run SV for back, SH for figurine etc, but hey, i've been running those things. And when I look at some of the gear you guys ahve on your tanks I really dont see me far off in fact i see me having more of the recommended items than some of you even have.

Blah enough ranting: do i stock more stam and sacrifice the avoidance that I have or do I just keep hoping that running SH will drop a figurine and that SV after 16 runs will finally drop the devilshark cape? neither of which I feel will be a big boost to my main hinderance, which is of course my low HP.

Assuming your Armory is correct, do NOT resocket for all Stam yet as you are not yet uncrushable. Remember the order of how you should approach tanking: 1) get uncrit 2) get uncrush 3) get as much health as you can maintaining the first 2.

Saying that I get the libram, cape and perhaps the figurine off the colossus, that barely puts me over the avoidance threshold and really does not do much for my stamina.

How is it that this gear that people are recommending i get isn't helping put my stamina at the minimum recommended to start tanking KAra?

Do i have to get T4 pieces and badge rewards first?

I'm looking at my gear and I really doesn't think it falls that far short minimum. in fact, some upgrades will look to lessen my stamina. is this something i should be concerned about or just the curse associated with gearing a pally tank?

Stamina is not the "end all be all" stat of tanking. While a lot of people think that the huge buffer zone given by a ton of stam and armor provides the most consistent damage intake and the proofs show that gearing purely for stam is better than gearing purely for avoidance, the major factor that is overlooked is that you can gear for BOTH this mystical thing called a BALANCE and be more survivable than either. Jamming Stamina into every socket is a good way to be a dumb tank.

Gearing for avoidance and gemming for stamina seems like a healthy balance to me.

Palys particularly need to gem for avoidance for at least a while before "gemming for stamina". After getting what's necessary, sure you can gem solely for stamina, but I find a balance is still quite helpful. I'll never put anything but a Solid Star of Elune into a blue socket again, but other colors I still use Enduring Talasite/Glowing Nightseye. Gives more leeway when looking to upgrade gear if you're not sitting at "the bare minimum" for avoidance.

Sort of a tangent here, but both of my trinkets now are basically stam buffers, with a nice effect, but I still have my Figurine and Pocket Watch just in case. Not just for specific occasions, but in case swapping out a piece of gear will make me crushable, then I can put a trinket back in that has avoidance.

Now that I look back on things, and this was referenced in a thread in maintankadin forums, should i keep a set of gear for running kara, and another set of gear with LESS AVOIDANCE and MORE STAMINA for tanking heroics?

Since u can't get crushed in heroics, do u STILL REALLY NEED the avoidance? This has been debated in other forums and I want to get the advice here. Way I look at it, it doesn't hurt to not take a clean hit in an instance, even though blocked hits can accrue upwards of 2.5-3k damage.

If u dont need the avoidance for the heroics, would say, farming the righteous set and some stam trinkets be better tanking gear as opposed to what my armory currently has on? (which provides me something like 104% avoidance).

In hindsight, if having a second set of gear is true, I should never have D/E'd the steam hinge neck and the other random shields/armor that I picked up through questing... I'm wondering if libram of avengement is even just a suitable piece for tanking heroics...

etc. It would be awesome to me if I didn't have to go to farm two sets of tanking gear but as its pretty clear the needs for both can vary, I want to know what your (experienced tankadins) common experience with this is: a)1 set of gear to use for both (with perhaps one or two gear changes) b) 2 sets of gear for heroics vs raid (with various different changes to greatly affect stats in some way)

I wouldn't advise a full second set of gear unless you start getting the REALLY good stuff (probably starting with half SSC/TK gear and up). Just some pieces here and there downgraded would be sufficient, or what you tank Kara in is perfectly fine if you don't need to downgrade for mana purposes. I swap in some of my healing gear when running some Heroics because I am having problems keeping my mana up in normal gear: read, not taking enough damage.

You can get uncrit/uncrush in craftable/buyable/quest reward/regular instance blues (the GREEN Nexus Guard shoulders and Junior Tech 3rd Grade bracers will even get you there) with a Libram of Repentance. For this set-up, the only thing that you need to step up to the more difficult content for is the Libram. This can be done with 100% +12 Stamina gems, there's no need to socket for avoid or defense. It does require the standard enchants and item enhancements however. If you exclusively run the content needed to get those items, gemming for stamina would be the better option. If you want to keep your foot in the heroic/kara door, keeping some avoid and defense would probably be the better option.

Just don't get your head caught up too much in the numbers. Have fun with what you're doing. Otherwise, why are you gearing up in the first place?

EDIT:

And for your new question.. I like to wear a Threat set in heroics. There's usually not enough damage coming in to wear a progression tanking set that's made for survivability. However, when you get to the gearing point at which your survivability set is overkill for heroics, you've probably also won several spare pieces of your Tier armors etc just because there aren't enough people in the group to really NEED that piece week after week.

looks like 2.4 is out today. i cant get a real set answer on teh badge loot, so saying that gear progression wise, i am only looking to be maintanking kara and gruuls, which gear should i shoot for (badge gear or tier gear) and in your minds, is the 2.3 loot better for my situation as opposed to the new 2.4 badge loot

It's gonna take a while to get the Badges for the 2.4 loot, but as I understand it, the Smith won't be available right away anyway (for the purchase of that loot). You've got time to stock up Badges, but if you really need to upgrade something with badge loot, that would be better than waiting. Various pieces of Badge loot will actually be replaceable with 2.4 Badge loot though, so keep that in mind when making your decisions.

As far as Tier gear, Tier 4 set bonuses are amazing! Try to get 4 pieces and the Badge chest (imo).
