Tanking stats questionFollow

I'm a Holy Paladin by heart, 1st of all. But in my server I've noticed a lack of tank, much more then the lack of healers. For my raiding guild, I'm gonna keep going as healer, for so many reasons that's not even worth mentioning in a tank post, but still today I tried to gear up as tank to see if I could do some instancing, heroic and normal. The result was so disturbing that I didn't even try to tank. I simply logged off and decided to hear from people who actually do have tanking and regearing experience.
Btw I didn't even change talents yet to protection, so the stats here don't have whatever boost or reduction they would get from the talents.
Also it may be worth mention, before I list the stats, that I did not toss any enchant or gems yet, and that some of the gear are from my Holy set, because I did not find at AH anything better then them (like some BG, Heroic Badges and Kara stuff).

STA: 445
Armor: 12593
DEF (I think it's DEF rating): 382
Dodge: 9.38%
Parry: 6.28%
Block: 6.28%
Health: 7647

Now honestly, I think most of these stats, even after getting a couple of tanking stuff from AH and crafting Tank goggles from engineering, are not very different then what it was several levels ago. Adding to that, as Holy with similar health and armor, I can get 2 shot by normal mobs in heroics. Bosses can prob drop me dead on sight.

So seriously... How do I raise that so much?! I mean, I've seen paladins in greens and just a couple of blues with decent stats. Those seem to be a bit embarrassing to me, and I can't figure out how the hell I can raise that pre-heroic.

Just check out the defense and mitigation sticky, it will tell you pretty much everything you will ever need to know about all the things you just asked.

Yeah I've seen the thread (I admit I didn't read it all tho), it's an awesome work ^^

What I was interested to know tho, was if changing to protection tree would fill enough of those blanks to actually allow me to tank pre-heroic.

Idk, I'm reading it again anyway, but I'm not sure I'll find that answer there.

The defense and mitigation stickie's gear guide is very confusing.

He doesn't even offer an opinion as to what he thinks is the best piece.

Jack, if you were looking to gear up through 5-mans and heroics what set of gear would you want, excluding stuff from professions?

Well, it may be redundant to mention this, but if you want to tank you'll have to spec into Protection. The important ones are Avoidance, Holy Shield + Redoubt, Blessing of Sanctuary/Kings and that +10% stamina one. The first three will stop mobs from hitting you, and mobs in heroics hit very hard, which is why you were getting two-shotted. With paladins it's less about health and armour and more about your defence stats. And yours are sucky, to be honest.

It's really simple, the talents are what make the difference. You need to spec deep into prot if you want to tank effectively. So either you put your guy on hold for the time you're not raiding, or announce to your guild that you're a tank now. Or else spend a lot of money respeccing every week.

Towards the bottom of the list he gives you his opinion of the best pieces to get pre-kara. Every single piece, which gems, and which enchants to grab to hit uncrittable, uncrushable, and still have a good amount of stamina.

I used that sticky when gearing up my tank, I followed it as close as I could, and if you look at my armory you will see that I have a lot of the gear that he recommends in that list, enchanted the way he recommends, and gemmed the way he recommends, and I have a pretty awesome pre-kara set if I do say so myself.

13.7k hp unbuffed while maintaining uncrittable and uncrushable with the darkmoon card suits me pretty well.

I looked at the whole list.

The only semblance of order I could see in it was that he put them in order of where to get them. As in 5-mans and quests first, then heroics, then Kara.

I may be missing something but I've read that entire thread 2 or 3 times, so I don't think I am.

I am a long long way from worrying about gearing for Kara (hell my pally is only level 20), but I like to plan ahead.

Alright thank you guys ^^

Yeah my focus is still Holy Paladin, but since I'm only doing Kara atm, I was willing to go prot for the week, and Holy only for the guild's events. My high end gear would still be focused on Holy. So mainly I'm not really concerned on getting uber gear for tank, but I did wanted to be able to successfuly tank on heroics.

Again, thank you guys for the advices ^^

Felsteel Helm
CE Neck
Pauldrons of Brute Force
Devilshark Cape (MUST HAVE)
Vindicator's Hauberk/Jade-Skull Breastplate
Junior Tech 3rd Grade Bracers/Bracers of the Green Fortress
Felsteel Gloves
Shat'ari Vindicator's Belt
Timewarden's Legs/Felsteel Legs
Mana Tombs escort quest feet
Shadowmoon quest rings
Figurine of the Colossus
Dabyrie's Enigma
Crystalforged Sword
Shield of the Wayward Footman

That'll give you over 11k HP, over 490 defense, nearly uncrushable. Actually, you may be uncrushable with the right enchants and a Libram of Repentance. With a Major Spellpower on the sword you'll have enough Spell Damage to hold aggro straight through all of Tier 4 as well. The next replacement will be the Amani Punisher in ZA.

Those are all easily obtainable pieces. The Felsteel pieces are crafted, but available CONSTANTLY at good prices on the AH because people skill up with them. The Green Fortresses are crafted too, and expensive, but the Junior Tech 3rd Grades work great. A few rep rewards in there that should only take a couple instance runs. The Crystalforged Sword and Wayward Footman are BoE world drops, but they're CONSTANTLY on the AH at decent prices.. 150-200g for the sword.. 60-80g for the shield, which can be replaced by a Shield of the Void if you *want* but the Footman's one is great for uncrushable.

I rarely ever give direct suggestions for gear replacements. Normally I would say that those stats are aweful low all around and that you can find lots of easily obtainable gear to bring those up considerably. We have EXCELLENT Holy gear advice on this forum, and EXCELLENT tactics and spec advice for every class in the FAQ, but I agree that the Protection gear advice isn't always totally there.

Check out the Maintankadin Forums' Gear section for a TON of advice on easily obtainable tanking gear:

Thanks Jack and Losie. I did indead miss that portion of Thels' guide.

What I'll probably do is run as many instances as I can with a priest or shaman healer and grab EVERY piece of plate that drops, whether for tankadins or healadins and just figure out a tanking set and healing set for offspec after I got em all.
