I already have a dwarf Hunter and started a Troll hunter that I want to make a "solo" job meaning 1-70 w/out having to group at least til its absolutly neccessary. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what a good route to start with would be. Should I be at 41/0/20 or 20/0/41 or another combo. I figure with 40ish in SV i could at least be a decent CC for endgame, but IDK if going BM would still be better with a "tank" pet.

For reference my dwarf hunter (main) is still only 32 but I do plan on 41/20/0 for a DPS/solo when I need to. I know there are a lot of opinions on spec issues so any and all are welcome so I can see what I like best based on your agruments/thoughts. Thanks in advance.

This is Bm biased reply, as I've yet to experiment with MM or SV even after over a year of playing, but Bm (41/20 raid build) for soloing works for me.
Your pet is your tank, and the BM build gives it the best options and chances to maintain agro so you stay alive and just stand back with the "pew pew".

I've found, in solo circumstances, once you do pull agro its pretty simple for your pet to reacquire your targets bad intentions. Simply fire a concussive shot if its in range, or wing clip and move to range then fire conussive shot, this usually stuns the target long enough that your pet will regain agro. If this fails, the handy dandy intimidation skill works wonders.

I rarely have agro issues with my Owl, and if I do, its usually near the end of the fight which saves me the trouble of walking up to the corpse to loot :)

Any hunter build can be used well to solo. Its what we shine at. However, BM is the "easiest" class build to solo.

Is a quick build i came up with. This will make your pet a hoss and still allow you to do good steady damage. Several talents can be cut out if you want to (Catlike reflexes for Ferocious Inspiration). This just makes your pet as tough as possible and makes it do the max amount of damage. This spec is only ideal for solo play. You lose a lot of utility for trappin and raw DPS of some cookie cutter specs. Play around and see what you like. I would fill up BM first, then move into MM.

rinkkel has it pretty much covered. One little detail though; Spirit Bond = no go.

He's also assuming that you'll respec at level 70, making room for some really nice soloing talents. Then again, that's all they're good for; soloing.
Catlike Reflexes are, as rink says, optional to Ferocious Inspiration. However, CR would be a really nice damage decrease for your pet vs. melee:ers. Basically: If you're gonna respec at 70 you might as well pick this.

Now, I'm not sure how far the above statement goes... It could prove useful to skip the cookie cutter 41/20/0 that I was gonna link. Infact, since you get the MM talents late enough for it to not have that huge an impact on your gameplay, you might afford to neglect e few.

I was going to propose this.
However, in the light of recent thinking, it could actually be advisable to go with this. A more BM directed build, which gives you a nice static 5% increase to your damage with Focused Fire and Ferocious Inspiration (assuming it's up all the time, or at least almost). I've also put points in Imp. Hunter's Mark since that will greatly affect the threat of growl, making your leveling somewhat easier.

If you don't want to respec I suppose you could go for the cookie cutter spec. You'd loose some nice pet utility from Endurance Training and Thick Hide though... after all, if you haven't respecced earlier, it's only 5g :)

Not implying that anyone's cheap here, just assuming a case where you do not want to respec.

Happy reading.

EWWWW. No offense man, but Spirit Bond sucks.

putting those two points into mortal shots would make more sense

Another little tweak to the BM leveling build

With a BM leveling build, There are a couple of things you could do. Personally, I'd take Lethal Shots before anything else. This'll push back the level that you can get Bestial Wrath and The Beast Within, but a 5% increase to crit chance is worth it. After Lethal Shots, you should have Bestial Wrath at level 46 (or you can get it at 41, if you respec), and The Beast Within at level 56 (51 without getting Lethal Shots).

The skills you should be looking at last are ferocious inspiration, Aimed Shot, Rapid Killing and Mortal Shots. Efficiency should be one of the last things you get also, since you probably won't use a ton of mana until you get Steady Shot at 62. Now don't think that those skills aren't important. They are all great skills to have (although I can live without Aimed Shot for the most part), they just don't really shine until you're higher level and have decent gear.
