Mail vs LeatherFollow

#1 Mar 11 2008 at 9:14 AM Rating: Decent
for enhancement shaman, it seems to me that most of the karazhan leather gears are better than karazhan mail gears. so far, with shamanistic rage, i dont remember a time where i ran into mana problem especially if a pally keeps judgement of wisdom on bosses.

my question is, at what point when intellect and/or mp5 starts to matter?

When your Pallies can't Judge Wisdom, or the group make-up changes so that you don't have any other mana-restorers, or you get to 25-man content and things are more hectic, etc...

The leather is perfectly fine if no one else needs it, but aim for the Enhancement/Hunter mail as optimal gear. In addition to the MP/5, which you will need as fights start to get rather lengthy, there's the fact that it's... well, mail. Later in the game, certain mechanics that your tank and the rest of your party can't do anything about will force you to take damage, and you will really miss that armor if you don't have it.

Having perused a lot of level 70 non-heroic dungeon gear (both mail and leather) for my Shaman, leather almost always appears to be the best option. Hunter mail is entirely devoid of Strength, which (according to Elitist Jerks) is an Enhancement Shaman's best friend. Agility is good...it provides dodge and crit, but 2 AP per 1 Strength is tough to beat. In a lot of cases, you could add strength with gems/enchants, but getting a piece of gear with 25-30+ Str pre-gem and pre-enchant is awfully tempting. Personally, for solo endeavors, I much prefer mail for obvious reasons. If I've got a tank to hide behind while I unleash hell, I'd happily lose some armor value for the sake of a boost to Strength. The main drawback is that those times where I pull threat (as sometimes happens when the crits are a bit too fortunate in coming), I'm going to be that much more of a drain on the healer's mana.

... But almost always has twice as much AP as the comparable leather items have strength, which generally ends up evening out in the end since 1 STR = 2 AP. The only reason strength is preferable to AP is if you have BoK on, but as an Enhancement Shaman you should be getting BoM and BoS first anyways; BoK only if you have a third Pally in your raid.
