I was curious if anyone leveled using one of these birds and what their experinces were like as compared to the traditional pets: cat/wolf/bear.

they're not much different from a bear, besides the somewhat lower stats.

What I gather from their lack of focus dump is that they're a pain. I wouldn't get one.

LOL
I tamed the crazy colored one in terrokar(sp)...
I released him about an hour and a half later. Looks different, but just really is lacking as a pet. I hope blizz reworks pets to make them all useful.

There is a reason u dont see hunters with them as pets :P

They suck.... though I did get a t6 hunter in a WSG who got flamed for having a tallstrider by a guy, the hunter smoothly replied "Just watch, I will top the damage charts"... 5 minutes later the guy that flamed the hunter leaves... that hunter did a ton more damage than any one else, gear can carry your pet.

No, they're not good but they look cool :)

If you can stand the diet (cheese, fruit, fungus), then they're just fine for solo'ing. They have less DPS than cats, but more survivability. However, they have more DPS than boars, but have less survivability. They're well-rounded.

If you love the way they look, pick one up! Level one to 70, even. It's just that if you plan on doing end-game raids, pick up a Ravager when you get there.

There is nothing wrong with them apart from the food which will be mostly found at a vendor , unless you do as i do and farm most humanoids anyway for the food and cloth , i know of a few hunters getting a castor pet to 70 and a castor is a far worse pet to have.

I would say any pet can and will get to 70 if that is what you want to do , The chances are unless you start doing loads of pvp or instances you will never notice any real problems with a tallstrider.

My advice would be to check up on Petopia then train other pets that have skills you can learn , i usually keep at least 2 pets at all times , and i have 2 hunters with tallstriders as a second pet , striders make decent pets but there are better but as long as you want one then why the hell not have one.
