More Questions on High Level CCFollow

#1 Mar 10 2008 at 5:05 AM Rating: Decent
Hello All,

I am still learning the intricacies of instanicing at heroic level and some of you were king enough to respond to my previous post on the practice of a tank electing to pull to my traps rather than allow me to pull.

Anyway I am still working on my technique which I thought was going fine until a run in Slave Pens on heroic. I came across a number of mobs I was asked to kite as they were immune to trap, this was ok once i remembered to use concuss :) heat of the moment and all that.

Things then got tricky when I was asked to trap one and kite another, proved very difficult especially when the one nominated for kiting was immune to concuss.

Is this latter scenario common and therefore a required skill at higher levels as if it is I'm gonna need to practice a lot and would appreciate any tips.

Thanks

Very uncommon, and it requires both skill, a bit of luck (or no bad luck) and a healer to pull off.

The times i've had to trap + kite a mob that cant be slowed can probably be counted on hte fingers of 1 hand. (in well over 6 months of being lvl 70)

this particular scenario in heroic SP is the one with the coilfang defenders, right? i'm assuming your tank wasn't geared well enough to tank both at the same time. in the first pull, then he should be able to tank one while you lay a frost trap, use concussive shot, pet tank and FD to kite the other one all the way to the back of the hallway behind you. in the second pull, you pull all the way to the end of the platform. in the third pull after the second boss, you can kite him to the end of the hallway.

unless you have absolutely no cc in a heroic, you should never have to kite one target while trapping another; in a raid, this may be different (SSC? have not gotten that far yet). however, it does sound like you are relying only on concussive shot to kite the mob? don't forget to use your pet as well.

As far as having to kite and trap....you probably had a bad group makeup

In regards to kiting the coilfangs, while freezing trap doesnt do anything, frost trap does. If you keep dropping frost traps and concussive shots you can kite these guys the length of the map.

Depending on your spec you may also have other tools to use in the process of kiting other than frost traps and concussive shot. From the MM tree there is Scatter Shot which is a really nice close range stun shot and from the Survival tree there is Wyvern Sting, a 12 second sleep + poison shot (though I do find it's utility is sometimes limited depending on the type of the mob you are shooting).

Typically in a kiting situation I will try to bounce between all my abilities so as to avoid getting caught by everything on cooldown. Frost trap, run a distance, concussive shot, run some more, scatter shot it, then another frost trap, that sort of thing. Also, and I assume this happens to all hunters, work Distracting Shot in there or at least a few Arcane Shots because you will lose aggro eventually. Nothing worse than to be facing away running thinking you're kiting then the next thing you know you see the health of your tank or healer drop to 0%. Turn around, and the kited mob is nowhere to be seen because it got sick of you and ran after the rest of the group.

Thanks for all the tips, very helpful and encouraging. One final question, what is ssc?

Cheers
