I understand you said it as an example, RPZip, but Captain Olimar is DEFINITELY not bad. He's an amazing character. The Pikmin system is well implemented.
Seriously?
The Pikmin were way too easy to block and he has no real special moves other than them. His attacks are relatively weak with an unimpressive recovery move. What about him makes him good? I'll admit I didn't spend loads of time with him but he seemed... bad. Really bad.
Well, see, I didn't spend much time with Pit. And when I played as him, I thought he was terrible. His smash attacks have no range to them, his arrow was too fast for me to curve, and gliding takes practice. Other people told me Pit was great, that he was cheap, that he was overpowered, that he's their main pick.
I've a friend who's chosen Olimar as his main character of choice, and I've seen him play Olimar plenty. Using Pikmin as a simple long-range attack to spam is improper use-- it's best to use it like how Falco's ray-gun is to be used, in opportune times when the opponent is recovering from either being hit away from the stage or a missed attack with a long recovery time. When the red one is to be thrown, it works well as a normal throw. Yellow ones are long distance. White ones are long distance with less kick but more damage than yellow. I don't know what's so special about blue yet.
And the purple ones, they're your Smash attack when in normal melee range.
They kick butt. It's not about piling up Pikmin to beat them off. Spamming the A button will clear them off fast (noticeable with Fox, Sheik, Metaknight). It's simply the ranged (or smash) attack for getting in snippits of damage (or massive knockback).
Olimar is a complex character, and takes practice, just like how Pit and Snake do. I can ask my friend to give the rundown on Olimar later, right now he's Smashing with a guildie.
Also, I heard rumors that Super Saiyan Sonic can't go off the edge of the screen to obliteration accidentally. That true?
Edit: For clarity, all Pikmin can be used for a Smash attack. Purple ones are surefire knockouts, pretty much, unless there's like no damage.
