Are mages underpowerd in the 20-30 lvl range?Follow

I'm working on a mage right now. Level 24 and he seems underpowered compared to my hunter and warrior at those levels. I'm wondering if it gets better? I'm fighting lvl 16's right now(PVE) and 3 of them can kill me pretty easy.

What's your spec and how are you playing? If mobs are able to beat your actual body then, yes, you will die easily because you only wear cloth. It's a matter of keeping mobs at a distance as much as possible.

To take on multiple mobs you'll probably want to be frost spec, hold them in place with spells like Frost Nova and use AoE spells to dump lots of damage on more than one mob at a time. If you're casting spells at a single mob, try using polymorph to keep one out of the fight.

It's going to be about controlling the fight. If the mobs can move and hit you, you're often going to die.

It's probably true that the mage won't level as fast as your hunter, but there shouldn't be any reason for mobs 8 levels below you to kill you. Even if there are 3. I suspect your problem is that playing a caster can be a big adjustment after, say, the warrior you mention.

Don't let them hit you. Ever.

More specifically, a few essential things I would advise: First, at the level you're at, fight one at a time when possible. You'll just run through them quicker. Yes, you can take on more than that, but this really isn't the class for proving how many you can fight at once. You've got pallies and druids for that. You have great range, so use it to pull them apart from the pack and pick them off.

When you do fight 2+ mobs, I asked for advice here on this very topic not long ago and here's a summary of what I learned: Sheep one, and one other should be dead (or nearly so) by the time they get to you. Frost nova the rest, blink, AOE and/or take them down one at a time, depending on the situation. Use any and all spells that will slow them down or stun them (Frost has more of these tricks, but even Fire has one or two). And even so, sometimes you will just die, especially if the fight is in close quarters. Oh, and don't forget about mana shield when you need it.

Finally, this is very basic, and I mean no offense to anyone by mentioning it, but honestly something I really needed to learn when I started my mage: move around. Sure, in theory I knew this was a great idea, but I'd just never played a class that needed to kite. Don't stand still.

YES YES YES!!!!

From what you said you played a hunter/warrior, well your mage is going to be so incredibly different its unbelievable. Your warrior you will actual charge into the enemies and your hunter your pet will tank. With a mage your going to (if frost) frost bolt one of em til they reach you than Frost Nova, continue blasting your initial target (if its at low health at this point already just use Fire Blast) than switch to the other mob, and have that 3rd one sheeped from the begining.

Also, if your frost your gonna want to run run run frostbolt run run run frostbolt if they are getting close to you and you have frost nova on cooldown.

If your fire just rank one frostbolt for the slow, and fire ball/scorch/fire blast, and use pyro as an opener.

If your arcane, go frost or fire.

Very good advice. I do think i have been getting in melee range to much for sure and need to work on getting a poly off on any adds that come in. It is very different from the other two classes I have decent experience in. And hunters are so overpowered it's not even funny.

My mage felt quite underpowered in that range, so don't be too hard on yourself. The advice here is good, I'll just add to be patient. My mage started really feeling his oats in the 40s.

I've recently started leveling a mage as well (also level 24). I haven't had much trouble fighting 3 mobs of same level at the same time.

Just practice all the tools that are available.

For example with a standard 3 group. Melee, melee, caster.

For the start of the fight I sheep the lower level melee. Mainly because I want more mana at my disposal for the higher level. As soon as the sheep pops start casting at the caster. If they are using fire/frost use your ward. Keep casting until the 2nd melee gets close and frost nova. Move a little to the side and let another off, killing the caster.

Then focus on the melee in the frost nova (re-sheep if necessary). Sheeping targets is a godsend in the sense that you can at least buy time to regen before you engage them.

You could also try to CC two of them, kill one, then run and blink till they reset.

I am currently fire specced. (armory hasn't updated w/ 24 yet).
