So, I dump Spellstrike/Spellfire when?Follow

This started over in the Pally forums, but I'd like to continue it here...

So my mage, he's an alt. Crafted my gear, did some Kara, got some badges and geared him up really quickly. Regemmed my stuff to get hit capped at the urging of a few of you here.

Sometimes I get asked to come into my guild's SSC raids to round out some DPS if my Pally isn't needed. I hold my own - I'm not at the top of the charts, but I'm close.

Since I'm an alt, I obviously pass loot to our mains in the raid, but once people start getting geared up, there will be some left-over stuff for me.

But my question is, now that the fireball "tax" has been removed, when should I be dumping spellstrike and spellfire? Seems like T5 is a sidegrade with useless Spirit all over it. Yeah, my base stats kinda suck, but I get one-shotted regardless, no? The only thing I could really use is more Mana, but "meh" right?

The day that I did it was that I collected a couple pieces of loot that were upgrades (t5 gloves, more of a sidegrade, but more stam/etc and the robe of hateful echoes from Hydross. These two pieces lowered my overall damage but gave me other stats that helped compliment my character more.

Pushing T6 is about when you start seeing actual upgrades vs sidegrades.

Pretty much same as Anobix, i left spellfire at robe of hateful echos, and switched gloves to the badge ones (except when in arcane for a'lar then t5 for the 2pc) and belt of blasting(used the fire cord of the magus for a bit before belt of blasting also). I still wear spellstrike pants in fire spec although when i go arcane and dont need the hit i use either vengeful or badge pants depending on setup/fight. Didnt replace the spellfire hood until i got Hood of Hexing.

T5 level gear gives minor upgrades over Spellstrike but there aren't any gloves worth replacing Spellfire with and as such it is not worth breaking the set bonus. T6 level is when you replace Spellfire, really.

The 23 hit rating on belt of blasting alone lets you replace 3 +8 hit gems for
+9 or +12 damage gems on rest of gear, which alone is close to negating the spellfire set bonus. (assuming you have around 500 int with spellfire set which would be 35 damage from bonus).
I did the math on my 2 sets, I am arcane spec atm but i deducted the +25% damage from int bonus because that makes the replacement set even better since it has more stats.

Anyway i used robe of hateful echos/studious wraps/belt of blasting and then
spellfire set. Both socketed similar(although replacements had red sockets which are better than spellfire sockets, plus have better set bonuses. These numbers were without any buffs whatsoever.

spellfire set--6633health,9641mana,137hit,27.6base crit,1059 arcane/fire dmg
(this is using spellfire set bonus but subtracting the arcane spec 25% int bonus)

replacement set--7123health,9866mana,164hit,27.8crit,1024 arcane/fire dmg
(once again subtracted the arcane bonus from int)

The big difference is 35 more damage from spellfire, but like i said before if i were to go back to spellfire, i would have to drop gems in other pieces to replace with more hit gems to get back to hit cap. That brings the damage back to about even, and gain stats from replacement.

Take it for what you will, the original poster wanted to know when to replace and here is the hard numbers on it. Not much difference but there are times i have lived in raids with under 500 health and was glad i had the extra stam since didnt have to give anything really to have it.

Thought i should edit this because surely the next person is going to say you dont need 164 hit in arcane spec. I realize this but i usually raid fire (except when killing a'lar and stayed that way for Kael since guildleader wants me strong on aoe for phase 2.) But i used my normal fire raiding gear instead of my arcane accessory gear for this test on comparing the 2 sets. That is why I based results off of 164 hit.

Would you say the added stats on the Hood of Hexing from ZA outweigh the spellstrike set bonus?
I've been trying to find out who should get it if it finally drops, hehe.

I think of the cowl as a sidegrade if you're wearing both pieces of spellstrike that only nets stamina. Hood of Hexing is a major upgrade always.
