Paladin / Mage duoingFollow

My GF has just started playing WOW. My inner geek is happy.

She wants to play a mage, and she wants to duo. We won't be joining a guild, so we'll be relying on crafting our own gear and on drops.

Given the circumstances, I don't want to limit myself to one or two-handed weapons. Halving the number of weapon drops I can use seems foolish. So all of the protection spec shield stuff is out.

My GF will be going primarily arcane spec, so her threat shouldn't be unmanageable.

My priorities are:
1) Keeping threat off of her
2) Survivability (healing + damage mitigation)
3) Damage

I'm thinking of a mixed spec early on. Later I'll respec to a sword and board porcupine build, but I don't want to do that until I have a good source of 1H weapons.

I'm thinking of beelining for seal of command, and then fleshing out holy and protection as needed.

Am I on the right track here? Or do you folks have better suggestions for a duo spec with a mage?

Well without going into Protection and shields I'd suggest staying away from crazy AoEing, despite how tempting it would be. I'm sure with the two of you, you could kill anything before you'd die but you'd probably have to drink/eat constantly.

Excluding that.. the quickest, most efficient way to go is probably all out nuking things one at a time -- with that nice safety net that you can still run into a small group if needed. As long as you go deep enough Protection to pick up Improved Righteous Fury it shouldn't be a problem.

All I can say about your sample spec is.... that would certainly be interesting to play at 62 -- and by interesting I mean in no way shape or form would it be fun for me. Your mileage may vary. Mixed specs have a place up until about level 30, then the boons just get too good for anything but "all or nothing".

0. Play however you like, if you like a hybrid spec, just use a hybrid spec. (certainly when duoing with someone you know, they can't hold a grudge over you for now speccing deep into X)

Your questions:

1. Keeping threat off of her: she grabs the talent that reduces arcane threat by 40%, you give her blessing of salvation for another 30% threat decrease and you yourself go in prot to improved righteous fury (and always have this active). She will NEVER grab threat off of you, ever. Keep her safe.

2. Survivability: for most encounters your plate armour will be enough mitigation with the speed you will be killing. Against elites/bosses or whatever, just use the shield and 1 hander you must always have in your bags for additional armour/ damage mitigation. If needed, seal/judge light for extra survivability and if still more is needed, get talents in holy up till 70% uninterruptable heals and throw in Concentration aura and just heal while under fire. Very worst case scenario: use a bubble on yourself, blessing of protection on your gf and heal.

3. Most damage will be done by your gf. When no shield is needed, you will do quite some damage if you grab the seal of command in the Ret tree. But don't worry, arcane mages can do enough by themselves.

Have fun and enjoy! I wish my wife would like to play too sometimes, but she severely hates video games (and computers in general) and rp'ing...

I leveled with a Mage and a Lock, and didn't have aggro troubles until the late 30s. I was full Ret at the time, and so I ended up respeccing Prot, and never went back. I don't know what level you are, but you shouldn't need Imp Righteous until then if you just keep Salv on her.

By the way. Your conversations have ceased as you know them. She'll get hooked. And that's all you'll talk about.

My buddie and I did this combo. Worked great. Go which way you want of course, that is the way to enjoy the game. Looking for the best combo? Easy, you go prot and she goes fire. (you get 'em and hold 'em, she aoe's them to death). It's fast and fun.

Again... what you want.

from my experience Paladin/Mage is probally the best leveling duo. She can CC, DD (Damage Dealer), AI, provide water and food, AoE. Whereas you can, Tank, Heal, Buff, and provide a decent amount of damage. Just keep Salv on her and have her take the threat reduction talents in arcane. Should work great.

My wife plays a fire mage and I play a ret paladin. We've duo'ed all but instance-based quests from levels 1 thru 70 and it works well. It involves a little downtime but things die very fast with two DPS'ers working in tandem. As ret, keep your Righteous Fury up and keep Blessing of Salvation on her and you'll take all the hits. In the early levels I suggest spending 10 points up the holy tree to max out Divine Strength and Spiritual Focus. When you're in tougher boss fights and your health drops too fast, pop Aura of Concentration and heal yourself uninterrupted while your mage partner burns em down. Once you hit levels 58 to 70, you can change your talents or change to prot spec, and keep on duoing a majority of the outlands stuff. Hope this helps.
