Fury -> Prot tankFollow

#1 Mar 05 2008 at 5:01 PM Rating: Decent
Hello,

When i ding'd 70 i turned prot for instances etc, this turned out to be quite hard to get gear as people in heriocs/raids wanted people with good gear, regardless if they had the stats for tanking that specific herioc/raid. This led me to give in to the easier side and go dps. After getting a full epic fury set I see the invites dropping to a minimal, Im always in the daily herioc lfg but in the 2 weeks i've gotten herioc mechanar done as the only daily. I shout every 5 - 10 minutes about lfg but still everyone wants tanks. After stating to my friends/guild mates how much i hate tanking tonight in kara we had a 2 fury warriors, me and another, better geared with both tanking/fury gear. He was "distracted" and seemed to char more about dps charts than tanking his 'X' marked mob. So, seeing the cross'd mob going for our healers/casters I quickly equiped the only shield I have, the platium shield from shadowlabs boss #1. And successfully tanked the mob. And I quite enjoyed having some bigger responsbilities than just watching my threat.

As I stated before I was prot at 70, and this is where my problem is. A decent amount of the rare gear pre kara tank set is from questing. Ie. flesh's metal greaves and the sha'tary wrought armguards. As I was a tank before I had these items. Carelessly going fury and *vendoring* this items has given me a huge problem. As it is almost non existant to get groups for heriocs sometimes even normal dungeons as a fury warrior I have problems re-aquiring me gear.

Instead of getting replies to this post with "polar's pre kara guide" WHICH I have checked, I have another question that I could of just posted alone, but the wall of text seemed like a better idea. Should I resocket parts of my gear ie. the s1 shoulders, which I have seen tanks use. More recently I was with a guild in kara and they're MT was using them with some stamina and tanked perfectly using them.

So other than the few peices of gear I can simply pick up from normal instances, IF I can find a group, should I use some of the gear I have and resocket it and shoot for the numbers rather than certain peices of gear. Ie. making sure I have say 12khp, 13k armor and 490 def, and the respected dodge/parry/block chances. <- If this enough for off tanking gear, guildies said it would do. Im not sure whether to just go prot with hte gear I have now, (without the 2 leather pieices ofc) and attempt to tank instances, or stay fury and need on what I can until I have what the requirements listed above? As respecs are 50g and I am quite a poor character, I do not want to try tanking with a prot spec and the tanking gear I have (again without the 2 leather peices -.-) and have wasted 50g and try re farm it and be left in a hole of non grouping-poor character

Anyone else that has vendored gear by accident and has been through this before, please state you're opinions.

I've read this a few time... maybe cause it's late I'm failing to see the question Smiley: smile.

Ok, so you went Prot Warrior to gear up to MT stuff yes? That's what I did at 70. AND yes, I follow the pre-kara guide to a 'T'. It worked fine, I got my 'of the bold' shoulders, my jade-skull breastplate, etc off of it. I did fine, granted I have always spent the cash on consumables (pots, scrolls, foods).

Getting parties was not a problem when I changed to Prot. In Heroics, since most likely people are running them to gear up... CC is very important, if a mob pulls from you and heads to your healer... they're pretty much dead, then that'll prolly be a wipe, or a ticked off healer. Ranged attacks are pretty nice to have also (Mage, lock, hunter). So dps Warriors are pretty much last on the PUG list. Just sharing my observations, not all Warrior's opinions

Other than OT'ing a mob, which in heroics it's pretty much a bad thing anyway, we can only dps. Most groups will pass on a Warrior DPS lfg and seek a CC'er.

Ok now that is out of the way.

If you're looking for heroics, and you want to MT them... IMO you have to go Prot. Yes, it's another respec. Yes, solo'ing sucks as Prot (in my opinion... still... I do ok, but often would like to be Fury again when running dailies). Yes the repair bills suck, and only get worse... I'm dreading the bills on T5 on up.

So I now mainly run dailies with my Hunter, and keep the raiding to my Warrior, which is not getting me my epic flyers, but it is supporting both toons. If you're lacking money, I suggest staying fury, get a nice bundle of gold to last a bit. Finish all the quests you want, which nets you extra gold, then buckeling down and going Prot again. I only say that because most PUG leaders LFM will say no after you tell them you're a Fury Warrior willing to MT a heroic. *Again, just my opinion*

BG gear is nice, but it really lacks the mitigation needed for heroics. The mobs hit much harder, so the more damage you totally avoid, the better.

It's hard to really tell you what your lacking due to yor armory showing you're dual weilding and wearing leather *as you said*. Def=359, Evasion=18%, HP=10.3 all of which could not last in heroics (but again it's hard to tell your tanking set cause of your armory at the moment)

I suggest:
-Get the jade-skull breastplate (lasted me until nightbane dropped my chest).
-Try to get exaulted with Shatar for the shield. That and the belt from H. Ramps was my 1st 2 epics.
-KoT has nice tanking legs also, as well as a nice head enchant for being Revered. Easy way to get Revered is start running BM like crazy. It's easy and fast.
-Devilshark cape from SV's last boss lasted me until I finally got my badge cape.
-I also used Felsteel helm, boots, gloves for a long time. I started replacing them with epics.
-I can't see what tanking trinkets you have, but there's a few non-heroic ones. I'm still using the one from SL off the 2nd boss "Time for fun!"
-SL will also get you shoulders of the bold.

Your gems are all set up for dps. Which they should be... BG/arena stuff is not shabby for dps gear. Which is the need for tanking gear- Def/Dodge/Parry.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm lecturing, but post outlands there really is a need to seperate your dps and tanking set. I know I would not want a main healer Druid wearing all cat dps armor =)

It boils down to if you like tanking or not. I do, I don't mind doing way less dps, as long as it helps complete a raid, and it does.

Finally, if your armory is correct, WTH is up with Blacksmithing and Herbalism? lol. I see herb is very low level, I'm sure you just picked it up. Herb/mining might be a better way to go. It'll help you get gold since you said you're lacking it. If not, you'll be spending way to much on ores/bars to make your BS armor.

Hope some of that helped.

the best wya i have found to get a PuG, is to start one.

If you invite a few people and let them know you are Fury, most wil be ok with it.

and once you have the basic group make up:
Tank, healer, one CC.

most groups have a random spot open...enter fury warrior

simply put, if you can't get in a group, make your own.

make sure you make up for your shortcommings (perceived, probably not actual) with two appropriate CC classes, a good healer and a good tank.
