How do we feel about Gorillas?Follow

#1 Mar 04 2008 at 9:49 PM Rating: Decent
Just curious. I've just entered my 30s and am running around Stranglethorn a lot, so they're on my mind. I know they have that AOE Thunderstomp ability. Can I hear opinions from some people who have used them in the past?

Pretty good stam wise, and thats about it. IMHO I think a cat will do you good for leveling. Hell i used sin'dal from about 40 (or whenever i could tame him) until i got ravanger in OL. I say do tiger mastery and tame sin'dal, albeit hes a hard *** pet to tame alone.

Do you mean King B? Sin'Dall is just a named non-elite mob that hangs out on the side of the road. He has the same skin as all the other stranglethorn tigers.

Rillas seem to be pretty good for running friends through low level instances too. A guy I met had one and it could lay out groups of mobs in when running friends through stuff. Other than that... <shrug>

The gorillas are fun but are fruit or fungus eaters so can be a pain to feed as you will always have to know where the vendors are, the thunderstomp is good but unless you do not mind the manual selecting unless that has changed and the 1 minute cooldown on it is not that great , they have great health but rather limited in the damage they do , i tried one for a few levels and it did not impress me as a long term pet....

They would be a lot more viable if Thunderstomp didn't have the 1 minute cooldown. On the other hand, the animations are pretty cool.

Was King Kong naughty to you when you were liddul? :P Quite the Gorilla hater, but I can't say I blame you. I can't stand them. Their special sucks, especially compared to Screech... They only eat lolbananas and are too big for my taste. If I want something big on my screen I'll roll a tauren.

Nope, King B is the NPC you have to kill at the end of Panther Mastery quest. I dont think you have to do either quest chain to get them to appear, you might be able to just run up to em and go at it. Sin'Dall also hangs out on top of a little hill in the middle of all the elder tigers, not on the side of the road.

As of 2.3 neither is apparently elite any longer, that doesnt change the fact that sin'dall is a good pet with above average dps and comes with Dash rank 1. Still takes a lil bit to tame due to knockdown.

that would be King Bang...

all cats of the same level have the same dps - higher than the gorillas etc, but equal to raptors...

petopia will help locate other animals with dash ;]

I like the idea of a gorilla as a big, tanking pet; however, I don't like the in-game mechanics of:
  • Fruit or Fungus diet
  • Thunderstomp with a 1 min cooldown
  • Lacking a focus dump ability like gore or claw
  • Lacking a speed increase like charge, dash, or dive

If Blizzard changed the mechanics some, I think it would be fun to run around with King Kong bashing people on the head!

My dwarf hunter (pre-TBC) had a level 60 gorilla I used for PVE. For fun, I could tell it to stay and stand inside the pet and not be seen. I called it dwarven gorillameld. Fruit wasn't hard to get either, the vendor I always used walks around the mage part of IF.

Go tame one, trying out different pets is one of the things that makes hunters fun.

Diet: I don't mind having a picky pet if it's well worth the trouble. Gorillas aren't atm. Owls don't eat fish, cats do. Owls have Screech, cats don't. Conclution: Owls are worth the trouble.

Totally agree with Thunderstomp. They need to make it 10-20 sec CD, depending on how much threat it actually does (I don't have those numbers in my head since I've never had a gorilla). 10 sec sounds about right, since it can't do that much more damage than Screech...

I semi-agree with the focus dump bit. All pets aren't meant to have a focus dump. If gorillas were do get one, Maul would be an idea, that could replace Claw for bears too.

Charge would be a suitable skill for a gorilla. However, yet another additional-threat skill might make them slightly OP at that particular role. I don't see a Gorilla dashing though...

You, Sir, just got yourself a very well deserved cookie! I must try that someday... Too bad I have more chance of doing a INVERSE PET TAURENMELD, because I think my tauren is that huge that I could hide my gorilla in myself...

That or some sort of giant Leap (or multiple smaller Leaps). I could totally see the big ape jumping some small Gnome... the leap would not generate additional threat (since that would indeed make them OP a bit) but would bridge the distance.

I had a gorilla for a fair few levels when I hit Stranglethorn.
I never had that much of a problem with food, I just devoted a couple oof bag slots to his diet, and topped up when I could.
It was annoying that the Stomp had such a long cooldown, but it was very useful as an AoE agro generator, keeping the mobs on him while the Pet Heal was ticking. And he was a good tank. I had mine specced with lots of Greater Stamina points.

As for proposed future abilites:
How about "Chest Thump", a taunt like the Warriors Challenging shout, or just an AoE threat like a voidwalker gets.
Personally, I don't see any speed enhancing abilities coming for Gorillas. Bestial Swiftness is the best we are going to get.

If you want a pet with AOE threat ability get a bird or bat. Monkeys are, in my opinion, one of those useless pet classes. Along with sporebats, tallstriders, turtles, and a few others. However, for an average player, having a pet you like should outweigh having a "useful" pet.

I find that, once I got used to dash (or dive), I couldn't really go without, which is mainly why I released Skittles (a.k.a. Deathskitter from Terokkar - real pain to tame at the time) back into the wild.

I found that the gorilla was very hard on my bags and I couldn't buy Samsonite at the auction house. So I had to give him up. Traded him to some character named "Dian-Fossey", whatever her name was. Haven't heard from her since.
