Question about my 2/48/11 buildFollow

#1 Mar 04 2008 at 2:11 PM Rating: Decent
This is my build as it stands now, for a new mage on a new server.

In order to get the 2 points for Arcane Subtlety and the 11 for Icy Veins I sacrificed:

Flame Throwing
Improved Fire Blast
Improved Flamestrike (duh)
Master of Elements level 3
Playing with Fire

Out of those, are there any that I should have in the build? And if so, which talents should I give up in exchange? I plan to do it all with this toon: PvE, PvP and raids.

assuming you are raiding (the main reason for the 2/48/11 build) impact is useless.

here is the standard:

Well, like I said, I wanted to do everything. I figured that this build would give me good viability for any situation.

And actually, I created that build of my own thoughts; I didn't realize it was 2/48/11 until afterwards. =P Edit: Nor did I realize the similarities to the standard because I had never before seen the standard.

Edit: I screwed up the build but it's fixed now. Had two points in Imp. Fire Ward; now they're in Master of Elements.

flame throwing is huge and playing with fire is a nice increase in dps as well.

...And after plenty of reworkings I give up. >< The standard it is; I'll only have to respec for PvP.

Just a further question on this .. I quested fire until 60 when I changed to Frost ... I've found it quite enjoyable to level as frost, but I've just hit 70, and was considering (very seriously) going with a full (2/48/11, as discussed here) fire build.

This is mainly to do instances and group, as most of the first step gear I am looking at is Dungeon Quest rewards, or group quest rewards, or plain old simple dungeon drops.

In your (whoever's listening) opinion, would the standard raiding / instancing build be suitable for questing / soloing as well, or is there some variation on the full fire 2/48/11 build that would be better suited.

To clarify, I am NOT looking at full blown raiding (well, not yet at least), but normal (maybe even some heroic) 5 mans are definitely on the cards if I want to get what I want.

tks all.
(ps. This may even help shed a bit more light on the OP's question as well, that's why I posted this question here ;->)

Depending on your gear level, you might actually do better with a 40/21/0 or 40/18/3 build for now. Either way, for non-hardcore raiding you might find 10/48/3 more to your liking as the efficiency it brings will make it stronger for soloing(and definitely is useful early on in raiding).

That's not entirely accurate. While it's situational at best, it can be useful at times in raids(striders on Vashj, for instance). The real problem with it is the opportunity cost. To get it, you usually have to give up far too much for it to be worthwhile. However, if I had 4 more points to spend, that's where they'd be going.

Yes!

For the OP, if you want to PvP and such (a more 'all around' build), 40/21/0 is a better bet, or 33/28/0. It allows you to get some of the good raid stuff (but not all of it) and some of the good PvP stuff. It's a 'middle of the road' build that I used when I first started kara a long time ago. As Pol (and I have often) said, it's all about the opportunity cost of the decision.

Thanks Pol, I wonder if you wouldn't mind posting a sample of a 40/21/0 build .. I have a rough idea, but would like see some clarification ..

Thanks a ton for the feedback.

should be pretty close, a few of the fire points can be moved around or put in other places, I went for the mana efficiency route for MoE, but for pvp impact is a good talent as well.

Common builds are listed in the Greatest Mage Post Ever Sticky....

You can show a man fire, but you'll have to do it again.... set a man on fire and he'll burn the rest of the days of his life....

Wait... that's not even nice.
