Thinking of rolling a Pally altFollow

#1 Mar 02 2008 at 8:59 PM Rating: Decent
My guild does a lot of end game raiding, so i was wondering:

How does a paladin compare to a warrior or druid tanking wise?

And can a pally keep up with a holy priest or a resto druid in healing?

Assuming each is specced for the situation, and im referring to end game such as kara and heroics.

Disclaimer: some would say Kara/Heroics do not in any way count as "end game". I'm not one, but you have been forewarned :)

Tanking: Paladins generally will have lower single target threat, but on multiple targets, no other tank can compare. Period. There are places where Paladin tanks have a very strong advantage over Rage tanks, but there are also places that a Paladin will have a very strong disadvantage. If you're guild knows how to properly use a Paladin tank, you could be a great asset as one. Problem is not everyone knows how to properly use Paladin tanks :(

Healing: Sure Paladins can keep up, quite well actually. Single target healing is where a Paladin healer shines over other classes and the Paladins ion my guild consistently top other healers.

This of course all depends on how good you are as a Paladin, but assuming you are skilled, you can fit either role quite well.

if you are considering heroics and kara (and ZA i would assume) as endgame, pallies are great. absolutely fantastic. there isnt a better 5 man tank, and they are perfectly competent (and wonderful on trash) in 10 mans.

A pally can solo tank all of Kara if you know a few good tricks. The only real problem will be skeletal ushers. CC helps for some areas (on the way through the stables and the 4 pull to Maiden) but you should be fine.

There simply is nothing better than a pally tank for heroics, too.

Alright, thanks a lot.

My guild has ran ZA a few times, but were working on getting two consistant groups through kara each week before we move on to more advanced stuff.

And heroic wise, we run the dailies everyday.

My main is a feral tanking druid, so im going with keeping him where he is, and bringing up a pally as a healer.

Don't really consider Kara or ZA to be endgame, but in 25 mans, our prot pally is used mostly for the trash. AOE tanking is no joke. Holy is gonna be the most in demand spec for a paladin. Ret is just lol in raids.

Disclaimer for every reply above this one: described is the CURRENT situation for the paladin tank. It may vary with every decent patch/ expansion or whatsoever.

So I would say: if you like to create a tank and you consider the paladin because it sounds cool to you to tank multiply mobs, just go ahead and make one. Rest will follow/ change according to Blizzards feelings. You never know what will happen and it never hurts to have one level 70 paladin at the ready.

Just curious - what else is lol in raids? Besides the usual ret whipping boy?

Boomkins are pretty useful if you put them in the right group, such as with an ele shaman, and any combination of mages and destro locks.

Demo locks actually out-DPS destro and aff locks from the time they have 2 pieces of T5 until into T6 content.

Dagger rogues really are LOL right now, but that may change with the poisonability of mobs and the extra 15% crit on Muti in the new patch.

The rest I agree with.
