Use "Drain Soul" skill on a foe. If it dies when channeling you'll get a soul shard. Doesn't work on "gray" and "skull" enemies.

I understand why it doesn't work on gray mobs (geez, durotar & elwyn forest would be full of locks getting shards), but why not on a skull mob?
