shot rotation on long fights vs short fightsFollow

#1 Feb 29 2008 at 7:37 PM Rating: Decent
Hi my spec is the classic 41/20/0 raiding spec
im trying to maximize my damage output here, so i was wondering if using the marksman shot rotation is better on thrash mobs because it has arcane shot and multi shot. So am i right to say it does more dmg on thrash mobs?

As for long boss fights i guess people use the steady shot-->auto shot rotation because it is more mana efficient, therefore it provides sustained dps. in the long run, this shot rotation would out damage to mm shot rotation because of its mana efficiency

to conclude these are my thoughts:
shorter fights-->mm shot rotation-->more dmg
longer fights-->bm shot rotation-->eventually would do more dmg than mm shot rotation

pls correct me if im wrong!
thank you! Rem im 41/20 beast mastery!

Using a 1:1.5 rotation would probably lower your dps.
Simply because you'd end up clipping...

BMs use a 1:1 shot rotation because they have an extra 20% shot speed and all they can fit in is 1 shot between each auto. This is also why they pick up a very fast weapon (~2.7 speed) so they dont have any dead (useless) time between steadies and autos... IF you have a very slow weapon (and minimal latency), you could probably fit arcanes whenever they were up, but i dont think even spamming a macro will allow you to fit in multis.

enjoy BM :D

For short fights, or fights with no mana problems (spriest, tankadin) the 3:2 shot cycle is the most dps. TKAsomething has a good thread on it. The EJforums is also good, but it is a bit harder to wade through.

But then you might want to do a replacement shot rotation, thus just replacing steady with arcane or multi.

If you absolutely want to maximize your DPS for shorter fights, you can replaces some steady shots with Arcane and Multi (if there's no CC around). It'll lower your mana efficiency even more, but your DPS will go up. This shot rotation would look like this:

Auto
Arcane
Auto
Multi
Auto
Steady
Auto
Arcane
Auto
Steady
Auto
Steady... Repeat.

It's not the most simple shot rotation. Arcane, Multi, Steady, Arcane, Steady, Steady can be kinda hard to remember, but it'll definitely up the DPS.

But yeah, don't try the 1:1.5. Like Aethien said, it'll lower your DPS because of the auto shot clipping.

I'd say do this instead:
Auto
Arcane
Multi
Auto
steady
Auto
Steady
Auto
steady
Auto
Steady
Auto
Steady... Repeat.
Will clip a bit when you do the Arcane+steady but even as BM with WSR its not more then 0.2-0.3seconds for me so it will most definately up your dps, and you shoot more shots then simply replacing 1 so my guess is that this is a tadbit better for dps.

Granted I'm not in an illidan guild anymore (retired my paladin for my hunter) and granted I haven't been raiding as long as some people, but I can keep up with some of the best dps in my guild (I kept near a T6 mage last night, he only beat me b/c of AoE)... This is the shot rotation I use:

Steady
Auto
Steady
Arcane
Auto
Steady
Auto
...
Spam steady/auto until arcane comes up and weave it in there. If its a REALLY long fight where mana is an issue, I'll pretty much just stick to steady/auto. The source of my reasoning is the following article:

http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t13107-hunter_shot_rotation_illustrated/

That article taught me a ton, and my dps shot through the roof after I used it. Although, I also think having a G15 keyboard and binding my steady shot macro to one G key, and arcane shot to the G key right next to it also helps.

EDIT: I actually had my rotation slightly off when I typed it out. I always hit my arcane after the third arrow leaves my bow.
