2.4 patch and tanking as a druid.Follow

well im a new druid that plans on tanking when i hit 70 (52 atm) and i was reading over the patch notes and came across this

"Mangle (Bear) now properly triggers a 1.5 second global cooldown, increased from 1.0."

Does this mean that mangle totally screws the global cooldown of all your other threat gathering skills? Does a bear tank use mangle?

Also does this mean that the idol of terror is now either usless, or less usefull for a druid tank?

Any thoughts and advice is cool, just remember i am new to this whole druid deal, the only real bear form stuff i have done so far is from lvl 10-20.

Yes we do use mangle anytime it's off cooldown, but I don't see that .5 sec increase having any impact whatsoever and idol of terror is still great for tanking.

mangle (bear) was bugged. it was acting like a cat form/rogue cooldown (1.0s) instead of bear form/warrior cooldown (1.5s). warriors and paladins and pre-mangle bears have been tanking fine on a 1.5s GCD ever since mangle was merely a datamined cat-only finisher.

I usually apply 5 lacerate before doing anything else. I'll use mangle once those 5 are applied. Then I'll keep the lacerate at 5 times and use mangle once the CD is over.

Sometime in guild group, depending on the dps, i just spam Lacerate because their fun is stealing aggro.. even in heroic =)

This is not optimal. Mangle is a bear tank's best attack. It should be used every time its CD is up. Not only is it a high damage, high threat ability, but the debuff it provides increases the bleed damage and therefore threat of your lacerate. The debuff will also help out rogues and cat druids. You should be keeping this up as much as possible.

Regarding the OP, this is a bug fix, not a nerf. The .5 seconds means that it'll now take you .5 seconds longer to do your next special after a mangle, but that's how it's supposed to be. I don't see this affecting bear tanks much at all.

In a minimal lag situation, this means you'll still be doing Mangle, Lacerate x3, Mangle... Mangle has a 6 sec CD and the .5 sec you saved just meant you were waiting .5 sec before you used Mangle again. If you were getting 4 Lacerates between Mangles because of the .5 sec left on the Mangle CD, your threat/sec should actually go up now if you switch from 1:4 to 1:3.

If bears are using Mangle every time it's off CD, the change in GCD won't affect Idol of Terror at all. You'll still be using Mangle every 6 sec, so the Idol of Terror buff should still be up most of the time.

@nbouchard

I'd apply a mangle as soon as you can. That terror proc is just insane.

Having tried this change on the PTR, I can safely say I do not notice the half second increase on the global cooldown at all. This may impact our overall TPS, but with changes to Lacerate itself that shouldn't be much, if any, negative impact whatsoever.
