I have a 70 holy priest but recently, I've been leveling a prot paladin. My goal is to main tank heroics and raids. Right now, my pally is only level 62 but I want to start planning out my itemization now so that I can spend little time when I hit 70 getting gear to START raiding end game content.

I've read the damage and mitigation sticky as well as the paladin guide on this website and yeah, I see that I want the 102% avoidance and 490 defense and 12k + life... but my question is, how do i go about doing that without having to run heroics or kara?

just from a glance, i feel as if this is the gear that i'm aiming at:

weapon: crystalforged sword
shield: platinum shield of the valorous
libram: libram of eternal rest
chest: breastplate of the righteous
leg: felsteel leggings
helm: felsteel helm
shoulder: spaulders of the righteous
hand: felsteel gloves
feet: I HAVE NO IDEA? suggestions? non heroic?
waist: Lightwarden's girdle
wrist: bracers of the green fortress
back: thoriumweave cloak
neck: steam-hinge chain of valor

finger: delicate eternium ring and crystal band of valor

trinkets: adamantite figurine and figurine of the colossus.

I dont have a mod or anything that will calculate the values that those prospective gear choices will give me but for you tanking pallys out there, would u say that the gear i've chosen to get on my way to 70 is decent enough to get me into kara and heroic runs?

I know its very hard to judge since i can't give you armor, defense, health and avoidance stats but i'm sure some experienced tanks out there would be familiar with this.

thanks for taking the time to read my post and i look forward to both your comments and criticisms.

You have the right idea, but here are a few improvements to the list:

Weapon: Depending on your avoidance totals, grinding honor or arena points for the PvP gladiator's gavel will get you more threat, but less block value, though it isn't that much.

Shield: If you want to grind Ogri'la rep to revered by doing dailies, you can get the Ogri'la Aegis, which s better than the Platinum shield.

Chest: If you are Aldor, you can get some rep to revered to get Vindicator's Hauberk.

Feet: Do the escort quest in regular Mana-tombs to get Flesh Beast's Metal Greaves.

Back: Thoriumweave Cloak if you're avoidance is already pretty high, if not the Devilshark Cape from the last boss in Steamvaults has more avoidance.

I know most of what I said takes time to get, but if you want to main tank you're gonna have to put time and effort into it, and you'll come out a better tank in the end.

Good luck! :)

Edit: spelling

Chest: If you are not Aldor, get the Jade Skull from 2nd boss in regular Mech.
Shield: Crest of Sha'tar from exalted sha'tar (can get a lot of the faction from doing mech over and over for the chest!)
Legs: Timewarden's Leggings from Revered CoT rep.
Waist: Sha'tari Vindicator's Waistuard from uh, Arcatraz key quest? Can't remember.
Shoulders: Righteous are fine if you can get them, but I picked up Shoulderguards of the Bold from last boss in SL - this is probably more often killed than Bot, so maybe easier to obtain.
