talent buildFollow

I'm starting to roll a mage for something new but don't know what talent build to use. I've tried creating my own but I think they would suck in actual use. I used to see a lot of people saying frost was the way to go for leveling, but now I'm seeing a lot of people saying the same about fire. What do you guys think? If someone good link me a good talent build to use to level up with, that'd be great and I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

There are a number of builds outlined in the Greatest Mage Post Ever, conveniently stickied for you right at the top of this forum. That same post also analyzes each talent individually, making it easy for you to customize the cookie cutters for your personal use.

A really cool thing about the mage class, IMO, is that there is no one clear spec for leveling. They're all viable, so you can really pick whichever you think will be most fun, and not be afraid to respec/experiment.

Have fun with your mage!

Let me unnecessarily expand on that and say that this is because burst damage is inherent in the mage class's abilities-- it will always be faster to level than a paladin, shaman, or priest, even if these three classes choose their "DPS specs". This is similar to other pure-DPS classes, and not like those hybrid classes (priest and warrior, I'm including as hybrids). Hunters, Warlocks, Rogues, and Mages all have several adequate leveling specs because they're damage-dealing classes. Their CC trees, their survival trees, their PvP trees, they all come with built-in leveling speed because of damage.

I dunno. I bet if I went over to the rogue forum and told them I was going to level in a spec other than combat swords, they'd all laugh and throw things and call me dirty names. Then again, maybe that's just how they are.

Lol... true... same on the druid forum if you're not leveling feral. ;-)

SO not true. Okay, maybe a little bit the laughing part, but dirty names are NEVER used on the druid forums. We're nothing but cubs and kittens and pretty little saplings over there.

Druids are a hybrid class, and so I didn't include them on the "several leveling specs" thing.

As much as the rogue forums won't accept anything that is not optimal, Assassination seems to do very well in leveling, just not as well as Combat. Kinda like the different in leveling Fire instead of Frost. And Subtlety after Shadowstep makes great grinding.

As a rogue with a semi-newly formed mage, if you like a talent build and you have no problem with it, then use it! We basically just give you (our opinions) information on what we've learned as the "best" at the time.

For example, combat swords may be the best to level with AS OF RIGHT NOW, but it doesn't mean it'll be that way forever. Same goes with any class and any build. Frost could be great one day and the next fire is.

To those of you who said to not tell us rogues on the rogue forum that you're not specced combat swords, don't worry about it. There's still a few of us on there that won't laugh in your face. It's all about HOW you play your spec, not so much as your spec itself.

I love combat swords, but that's me. Yet, I've seen many shadowstep rogues on BGs that do great with their spec. Spec the way you want to, sure there are some things within a spec that may be useless in PVE and useful in PVP (and visa versa), but that's what these forums are for. They're for learning.

And lord only knows how much everyone has helped me out with respeccing my rogue and trying to better myself.

In the end, it's all about you. You spec the way you want to and learn the ways of said spec. (just an example) Someone could spec fire and another person could spec frost, while you spec arcane, but it doesn't mean the other two will know what they're doing.

As I said above, it's all about HOW you play. Good luck!
