Tanking Def questionsFollow

Just a few quick questions on tanking,

1, does being crit immune matter pre Heroics?

2, I'm not sure how far I will get with my druid regarding gear from heroics, kara etc, so I'm wondering if its a good idea to stack all my +Def rating gear into as few items as posible? I can craft all 3 of the Heavy Clefthoof set and with all the sockets filled with Enduring Talsites I would have +106 Def in just 3 items (items which I probably won't replace in a hurry) with the neck from CE Strength of the Untamed (+19 DEF) and a Tenacious Earthstorm Diamond (+12 DEF) In my engineering hat (When Primal Nethers are no longer BOP) I would be very close to uncritable.

I could then swap out the Talasites as I found better +def gear.

3, Is it mobs 3 lvls higher than you who can crush you? I read somewhere that mobs in heroics are lvl 72 so you can't be crushed by them, is that true?

Why wouldn't it? Getting hit for double damage always sucks in my book. But non-heroic non-raid bosses are only level 72 so it doesn't take the famous 415 to get immunity. Instead of needing to reduce crits by 5.6% you only need to reduce them by 5.4%. I don't know exactly what def rating you need to do that, though. Read up at http://wowwiki.com/Defense#Critical_Hits

I've never worried much about crushing blows since everybody always says we can't avoid 'em entirely anyway, and our "defense" against them is having the armor and HP to soak them up. So I hold on tight and soak away. : )

The formula over at wowwiki is "NPC's level x 5 - Player's Defense) * 2% - 15%" For the record, I suck at math. NPC's level (72 in this case) x 5 = 360 - Player's Defense (should be 350) equals 10. Multipled by 2% = .2. Subtracting 15% of .2 from .2 leaves you with .17. Does that mean chance of a crushing blow from a level 72 is .17%? I dunno, skribs or one of the other formula masters can probably tell you what chance if any a level 72 has to crush ya with 350 defense.

Here is my armory: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Thunderlord&n=Charade

Yeah I have some of S1 and T4, but if you look into lower level things you should be just fine. When I am fully raid buffed for kara I have 19k+ health and 25-27k armor. I am sitting on 425 defense and I'm fine. Pre heroic I would not care about defense, until I started to MT kara I didn't look at all. Heres is what you need to get to:

Defnse: 415
Health:13.5k+
Armor: 20k+

The more defense and health you have the better. Since druids do not have the abilty to block or parry we negate being crushed by having much more health and armor then all of tanking classes. After you hit 13.5k+ health and 20k armor (easy) start worrying about your defense. Try to use the +stam + def gems instead of +def only. Also try to hover around 25-28% dodge for kara. After that I believe it becomes more of a concern but you should be fine.

Edit:Changed a few misspellings

@Velkryi

If i were you - i'd seriously get rid of some of that heavy clefthoof you have and consider twacking some other items into there.

Defense is nice n all but you are massively over the cap for being immune to crits.

I did this when I had 2 pieces of s1. I kept my heavy clefthoof vest and invested in some nice epics for the boots and leggings.

Result? I now have 32% dodge unbuffed rather than the ~25% I was hugging before.

Consider it.

It'd be much cheaper/easier to just regem the heavy clefty set. Right he's got the 8 slots across three pieces socketed with with +4 Def / + 6 Stam. That's +32 Def and +48 Stam. I'd just swap them for Shifting Nightseyes (+4 agility and +6 stam) one at a time until my def hit 415.

(Also, I assume that's not his full tanking set on armory atm, as it includes primalstrike belt and bracers, and staff of natural fury. All three are very expensive DPS pieces with much better/cheaper tanking alternatives to all three. Umberhowl's Collar and Braxxis Staff of Slumber for bracers and wep, for example.)
