Hello - My name is Bingobango and I am newbish button smasher. I got to level 61 by sending pet, flinging arrows, and feigning death when necessary. Recognition is the first step to recovery...

I know enough that above all, +agility has been my friend, and look for it often. I now find myself in the Outlands, where most of my gear is being upgraded, and often the +agi is lower than my old gear, but it has the added bonus of +Attack Power and sometimes +critical stike.

So - am I correct in thinking that my decrease in agility and increase in AP & crit chance is a good thing? Or at the least, not a bad thing?

Basically, I need a quick Azeroth hunter math 101. Where does agility fit in with all the new stats being flung my way?

Well, Agility gives you AP, Crit, Dodge and so on. Attack Power and Crit gives you that... Attack power and crit. So point for point Agility will always outperform AP and Crit. However, you almost always get twice the AP on an item than Agility, or enough Crit added into the mix to balance things out.

So basically, you just go for anything that seems like an upgrade while leveling. You will see more AP/Crit gear than Agi, so just pick up what comes your way. Once you get closer to seventy, peruse Aethien's pre-raid gear list so you know what to work towards in quests and instances.

There's not really too much you have to think about while leveling, gearwise. Spend more time making yourself comfortable with the various reputation factions. Just running through areas doing all the quests can give you alot of work at 70, getting the reputation up. Read up on factions when you go into a new zone, and find the most efficient way to progress through the zones.

There is a long, detailed post on Agility Equivalency Points (AEP) on this board somewhere, as well as on a couple of other boards (TKA Something, OBoards as well?). I don't have time to find it and link it, so here is the basics...you can assign a very generic points value to stats to weigh them against one another. There is a mod you can get from Curse.com that will add these numbers up for you and give you an AEP value on your gear which is amazingly handy when looking for upgrades. These are not rock solid, because sometimes, for example, you can't weigh Hit as high as this list IF your hit is maxed out:

Agility = 10 points
AP = 6 points
Crit = 8 points
Hit Rating = 13 points
ManaPer5 = 20 points
Int = 5 points

The values you get are strictly dps values. If you need more health, increasing that may be a top priority for you, but will not add to your dps. MP5 is valuable because no mana = no shots...this is not as valuable if you are not raiding or having mana issues and therefore you want to consider that. For leveling, if you are not having mana issues, MP5 may not be worth much.

Hit rating is only of value to 8% or so, but you won't reach that under most circumstances until Kara without really trying hard to get it.

Heh, there was a really good answer to this exact same question on the blizz forums. The short answer is untill 66 get whatever ups your dps. At 66 you get the wonderful Kill Command which procs off of your crits. So more crits more kill commands which can proc frenzy and so on. Also Agi scales with pally buffs which ap does not so raiding you want more agi. anyway that was the answer that was posted and it seemed to make sense to me. ymmv.
