Regular DPS Set & "Hit Set"?Follow

I'm feral PvE, and in dungeons I mostly tank, off-tank when one's needed, and DPS when the opportunity arises. I heal sometimes too, and carry full sets for all three roles which I'm fine with despite the packed bags.

Last night a drop bumped my DPS gear's hit rating to +142, but the last 40 points of that has come at the expense of AP. Went from like 2650 and +100 hit to 2550 and +140. Crit's been steady in the mid-33s.

It comes from upgrading greens like Dragonhawk Gloves of the Tiger, with +27 agility and +27 strength, to more "sophisticated" pieces like Fel Leather Gloves with 17 hit, 24 crit, 42 AP and two sockets which are currently dedicated to reaching the hit cap (+8 hit in one and +4 hit +4 agility in the other). So I'm sacrificing 50 AP to get that 29 hit. But that tradeoff only benefits me against level 72+ bosses that I hardly ever DPS right?

So does it make sense to equip my "AP set" most of the time and bust out the "hit set" only for those situations when I'm DPSing a high-levle boss? Or just get over the loss of AP and move on with my life as a hit-capped kitty?

Absolutely. There's no sense in being over the hit cap, because you'll only be gimping your DPS. I can't recall off the top of my head what the hit rating required to cap against level 71 and 72 mobs, but I know there's quite a jump from 72 to 73. Just make sure you're at/close to the hit cap for the mobs you're facing and put the gear on that gives you the highest AP/crit you can get while maintaining that hit level.

Hope that helps,
Camel

Don't know about you but I'm already way too strapped for space to carry around a 'non-boss' set of gear on top of my tanking, caster/healer, and DPS gears. They just don't overlap enough :X

If for some reason you find yourself with the extra bag space, you could put together a raid-boss DPS set and a trash/heroic DPS set. I don't think it would be worth the effort though, trash pulls are easy enough that most people don't even use consumables, and heroics are more about working together as a group than a strict gear check.

16 hit = 1% hit = 1% increase to overall damage

70 mobs need 5% = ~80 hit
71 mobs need 5.5% = ~88 hit
72 mobs need 6% = ~96 hit
73 and bosses need 9% = 142~144 hit

so it's fairly easy to achieve enough hit trash mobs, but keeping enough hit rating pieces around for bosses will effect your DPS a lot better than AP

I usually carry a few pieces of gear that help me mow things down quicker while solo.

I'm not a fan of the 'Brutal Impact' talent so my pounces don't last long enough to destroy an opponent with shreds while solo. That being the case I rarely prowl target to target and instead I'm pretty open and just Fairie Fire pull, meet target half way as it runs to you, and begin mangle spam.

And because I'm often face to face with my opponent's while solo, I've come to love shattrath leggings with 22expertise for a lot of solo work and love midnight leggaurds for when I can effectively dps from behind the target enough of the time for the expertise to not matter as much.

Because of this favoring shattrath leggings over midnight for a lot of solo work I often sacrafice the 142 hit cap and drop down to 121 +hit for most solo work(because shattrath leggins have no +hit), but it doesn't bother me in the least that I do because I'm still hit capped for most if not all of what I'm soloing.

I have a few other pieces that I use from time to time depending on what I'm fighting.

for me and the way things end up working it's like 3 pieces of gear more on me than I'd otherwise have if I only kept exactly enough pieces of gear for a healing set, dps set, and tank set... and if it helps me solo faster, I'm all for having the options handy and on me.
