OT in KaraFollow

#1 Feb 21 2008 at 1:27 AM Rating: Decent
Was bumped up to my guilds 1st team last week and was asked to OT. Never had to do it before and was rage starved whenever we needed to double tank a boss (Moroes etc...). How can an OT get the threat to stay at least second on the meter?

You're gonna have to keep Bloodrage on cooldown. Spamming Devastate and Shield Slam will drain a lot of rage and make sure you have rage reducing talents. To be on the safe side, buy rage pots off the AH or have an alchemy friend make you a stack or two.

Well, as on OT you shouldn't be Prot specced, as you reall dont need to be and it will just gimp the DPS you are able to do. A standard DPS build is fine (a few points in prot if ur gear really sucks).

Personally, i stocked up on Mighty Rage Pots. On a fight like Moroes, where you have to be 2nd on his aggro list, i would pop bloodrage AND a mighty rage pot at the start of the fight to build a nice bit of initial aggro, then keep bloodrage on cooldown, and use another rage pot if you see the healers aggro getting close to yours.

I found a good tactic was to let me, the OT pull Moroes to get some good aggro, and as the MT was better geared anyway ,he took moroes from me after a few seconds (obviously works best with a pally tank, as a warrior MT still needs to be hit to get rage)

TBH with you, if you have sensible DPSers, Sunder Armor, Thunder Clap and Heroic Strike is enough to get some decent aggro in Kara.

OT on moroes;

DPS Build is good enough, you don't need shield slam or devastate to keep 2nd on threat on a target that is last to kill of 3 or 4 mobs.

Moroes hits like a couple of wet noodles. Keep a shield on, and dps in defensive stance.

Heroic strike and MS/BT should do the trick. Offer to keep demo shout up on moroes (spec 5/5 imp demo shout, hint hint, that way your tank doesn't have to) for the tank.

If your not able to stay second on the threat meter, put more DPS gear on, if you have resilience gear, put that on for crit avoidance (PVP gear works GREAT as OT gear; resilience procs enrage = win, resilience reduces dot damage = win against moroes, resilience reduces critableness = win on bosses).

My guild leaders felt that the other tanks needed experience being MT so even though I am slightly better geared, I have taken the OT role a few times (and even went as melee DPS for a bit last night).

The Moroes fight isn't too bad for the OT since the MT gets gouged frequently which gives the OT a chance to build up some good rage and threat and both tanks should have plenty of time to build up some good threat while the rest of the group is taking care of the adds. I've also heard that some groups have the OT also tank one of the adds while it gets burned down so he can generate some rage to use on Moroes.

The Skeletal Ushers near the Opera event are probably the most frustrating since the OT really needs to be second in threat and it really can be tough on the OT to stay up in threat with limited rage. You almost have to have everyone install threat meters and just tell the DPS to hold themselves under the OT's threat. Once the MT gets ice-blocked, the OT should get enough rage to build threat to cover until the mob dies but until the ice block, Bloodrage and Rage Potions are about the only way to try to keep up.

It takes a bit of practice to adjust to playing as an OT. The more you do it, the more ways you find to compensate for the rage shortage.

IMHO, everyone should have threat meters installed anyhow... That's just common courtesy, and your DPS should KNOW if they are getting close to pulling threat, not just GUESS they are pulling threat.

Omen is lightweight, flexible and easy to configure
KTM is lightweight, flexible and easy to configure

They are NECESSARY for raiding in every guild I've ever been in; and looking at guild websites, every one I've been to has said you are REQUIRED to have one or the other or both installed.

On Moroes, Berserker rage is your friend. Once you see the MT start to walk around aimlessly, switch to berserker stance and pop berserker rage. Make sure you remember to go back to Defensive stance immediately. In the little amount of time that moroes is on you, you will have a full bar of rage to play with when he goes back onto the MT. Rinse and repeat. I hope this helps^^

Cheers all - lots of good tips. As i intend to be mostly MT, i wont be able to re-spec, but there are lots here for me to do without that. Will try a MACRO to do the Beserker Rage thingy and give this a go
